Harry Potter Isn’t Holding Back Anymore

Chapter 80: Ultimatum at Downing Street

"Now then, each of your Aurors will be charged with three counts of attempted kidnap, a Felony charge; and four charges of attempted murder (one for each Granger, and one for Midshipman Fenix), also a Felony charge. As the magical world considers itself a separate world, we are well within our legal rights to convert these charges to activities by a foreign government, thus making each of these prisoners as designated terrorists. The punishment for their crimes is death. How do you wish to resolve this issue?" the Prime Minister asked. "We have scheduled their execution for tomorrow morning."

"Ah….ba….You can't do that!" shouted Fudge. "They are all members of our Auror force! They are sanctioned by the Ministry of Magic!" he continued. "And, as we have just stated, those actions are considered treason against the crown, therefore their actions carry a death penalty. We are, however, giving you an opportunity to save their lives and resolve a great political blunder. I will give you five minutes to talk it over with Madam Bones" the Prime Minister stated, moving off with the Commander and General. "Do you think he'll bite?" asked the Commander. "I think he is desperate to get out of this mess, so yes, I think he'll bite." The PM replied.

In the meantime, Madam Bones was having a heated argument with Fudge. "Minister. You have already usurped my authority by sending my Aurors to kidnap/kill the Grangers. Their very lives are now in your hands." She stated. "I will not give into these Muggles!" he said heatedly. "Are you prepared to be responsible for the lives of 10 good Aurors, Aurors that have families? Are you going to tell their families why you let them die? Are you also really willing to risk the Crown abolishing the Magna Carta? Do you understand the far-reaching consequences of that action" she continued. "Our world will be exposed – that will violate the international treaty on the Secrecy of Magic act. That will also make us pariahs with the international community. The magical community of England will be up in arms! They will want your blood!" Fudge stood there white as a bone, literally shaking. "What do you suggest?" he asked meekly. "They are seeking three things here: (1) deal with he-who-must-not-be-named; (2) resolving this nonsense regarding the Granger family, and (3) resolve the issue regarding Midshipman Fenix. I suggest we start negotiating with one of those." She replied.

By the end of the day Fudge agreed to drop all charges against Hermione Granger, and since she was already enrolled in a school on the continent, no further action could be taken against her or her family. The charges against Midshipman Fenix were also dropped as there was just no way Fudge could reasonably twist the facts to explain how 20 marked Death Eaters, each bearing the Dark Mark and dressed in black robes and bone-white masks, "came to dinner" at the Granger residence. In return, the Aurors would be released to the custody of Madam Bones, with the admonition that repeat offenses would be dealt with harshly. Fudge was still under obligation as the Minister of Magic to deal with Voldemort – the PM would be in touch periodically to touch bases to see what advances were made toward this end. Failure was not an option. They had a 30-day deadline (January 24, 1996) to deal with Voldemort. With that, the meeting ended and the Aurors released to the custody of a stern-faced Madam Bones.

Before their release, the Commander addressed the Aurors along with Madam Bones. "Aurors. Each of you has been charged with crimes against the Crown. Each one of you has been charged with three counts of attempted kidnap, a Felony charge; and four charges of attempted murder of citizens of the United Kingdom. As you are considered foreign agents you are considered terrorists, and the punishment for your crimes is death. Your punishment was to be carried out tomorrow morning; however Madam Bones was able to …convince us you should not be put to death. You are being released into her cognizance. Before you leave here today, you will sign, in blood, that you understand why these charges were placed against you, that you were found guilty of these charges, and that if any of you attempt to commit similar crimes, magic and the Crown will be your judge.

If we catch you again, under any circumstance committing a crime against the Crown or its citizens, your judgement will be implemented for with. It is my understanding that signing this affidavit in blood, with a magical witness, binds your oath. If you break this oath, you will lose your magic and possibly your life. Do you all understand your situation and the consequences?" the Commander asked. With the exception of Dawlish, the Aurors were white as a sheet as they signed the affidavit one by one in blood. Dawlish just had a sneer on his face.
