Chapter 44: Chapter 44: Keys and Chess
Panic immediately set in when the group heard me, "Devil Snare?" was Hermione's first vocalisation of her fear. The shuffling around me confirmed that the rest of the group was fearful of the plant, "Think people, How do you deal with Devil Snare?" I said as I slowly started to sink through the vine layer.
Seeing me sink through the vines caused Hermione and Daphne to come to their senses, "Stop struggling and we can escape." Hermione said while following her own advice and slowly sinking. Daphne and Grace were not too far behind but the lads didn't seem to have heard Hermione as they continued to struggle and get constricted.
"Think, think. Devil Snare, Devil Snare... It is deadly fun but..." Hermione started as she tried to remember the rhyme Professor Sprout told us during our handling of Devil Snare in class. Daphne also seemed to remember it as she quickly finished, "It will sulk in the sun."
Both girls looked at each other before simultaneously casting Lumos Solem, light comparable to sunlight flashed from their wands which scattered the vines away from the boys who fell the short distance to the floor we were standing on. "Thanks," Harry said while standing and brushing the dust from his ass.
Moving along the only exit to the room, we started to hear the beating of wings. "Is that wings I hear? Are we going to face birds?" Ron asked while turning his head to hear better. We didn't get a chance to answer as we came around a corner and saw a large flock of flying keys, "Look those brooms suggest we have to catch one."
Grace's suggestion was met with silence as there was only one person who could ride a broom with stability. "Looks like you are up quidditch boy," I say while looking towards Harry and gesturing for him to take the stage. He complied with my statement with reluctance since I was the one who said it but as soon as his hand touched the broom he smiled at the familiar feeling.
Look for a key that looks different, as if someone has caught it before, or one that would fit an old-style door. Hermione shouted as she advised him on what key he was looking for. As he flew through the air the flock of keys seemed to move as if they were fish protecting the weaker ones in the center of the group.
The keys lashed out towards him as he tried to get closer, they would dive at him and jab his limbs with their spiky tips. Eventually, he dove down into the flock splitting it in two and catching a fat key with a slightly broken wing.
The keys started to dive at him more as soon as he had the door key, they flew at full force trying to pierce or push him off the broom. His skill on the broom managed to carry him through as he dodged the keys before passing the struggling door key to Hermione so she could unlock the door while distracting the flock.
After we entered the door and Harry flew in behind we heard the loud bangs of the keys slamming into the door, but when they subsided we were left in another dark corridor with little light. We walked down the corridor for a few minutes before it opened into a large chessboard with pieces made from large blocks of granite, we tried to cross the board but were blocked by the white pawns.
"Looks like we will need to play but some of the pieces are missing," Daphne said while looking around the room to see if she could spot another way. "We will have to take their place," Ron announced while stroking the riderless horse on the left side of the board.
Hermione was placed by Ronald in the queen-side castle space while Harry took a bishop space. Ronald looked towards the rest of us before saying, "The three of you can be the counterparts." I took a moment to look over the board before agreeing, "That would be for the best, just try not to get anyone hurt. From my knowledge of wizard's chess, the pieces are removed from play quite forcefully."
Ron nodded solemnly, the white pieces seemed to understand we were ready as they moved a pawn forward. Ron though for a moment before issuing his first command which was a small test on how violent the taking of a piece would be.
*Smash* Came the loud noise as the white pawn bisected the black one Ron had just moved before sheathing his twin blades. A gulp was heard from Ron before he continued to issue commands, the scene continued just like canon but Ron started to struggle since he couldn't fully utilise his main pieces since they were us.
"Ron, I know you can see that if I take the white square bishop then it will leave Harry open to win the game. We are on a time crunch so make the move." Daphne said breaking the stalemate the game had reached. The man in question looked towards me as if asking for my permission or perhaps seeing if I would hurt him should he put Daphne in danger.
"She decides her own fate, Weasley. If she wants to risk it she can." I say before saying under my breath, "But her mother will find out about it." Once he heard my reply he nodded and issued the move, Daphne 'took' the white square bishop making it explode into small pieces.
In response to the bishop being taken the white queen slid along the board until it was in front of Daphne and swung its arm down smacking her off of the board. Harry moved forward without direction and checked the king, whose sword fell from his hands before he reached up and removed his crown.
Grace, Hermione and I quickly ran over to the downed Daphne to check on her. She was fine since I had killed most of the force behind the blow meaning she only took damage from being flung off the board. I was still made however that when we left the room through the doors, the queen mysteriously dissolved into dust.
