Chapter 97: "The Auror’s Mistake"
"The Auror's Mistake"
With Einar now established at the headquarters of the Order, the atmosphere became more serene. For the first time in a long while, the members could leave to carry out their missions with peace of mind, knowing they were leaving the place in the hands of someone capable of defending it against any threat.
And more importantly: the children were safe. In fact, they obeyed Einar more than their own parents, as if his mere presence wrapped them in a mix of respect, admiration... and a strange sense of absolute security.
One day, the Longbottom couple came by to meet him. They weren't doing it as members of the Order, but as deeply grateful parents.
"Professor... Neville has told us a lot about you. Thank you... truly, thank you," said Frank with a trembling voice. Though he tried to remain firm, his legs shook subtly in front of Einar, and for that reason, Alice preferred to stay a bit farther back, observing cautiously.
Einar understood well why. His soul was too powerful. Standing before him was like trying to stare into the heart of the sun. Even a veteran wizard like Frank suffered from the crushing effects of his spiritual pressure. And yet, he had come to thank him. That earned him several points of respect in the Dragonborn's eyes.
"Your son did a good job. He worked hard for you both without a moment's hesitation. He's a good kid... I'm honored to have him as one of my students," Einar said in a deep yet warm voice. Then he narrowed his eyes slightly, as if remembering something. "In any case... I think I should give you a gift. As is proper for a first meeting."
Frank opened his mouth to politely decline, but didn't have the chance to say anything.
A golden light burst from Einar's body like a silent flame. The aura wrapped around both Frank and Alice like a warm celestial glow, melting away fear, pain, and confusion as effortlessly as the sun burns away mist.
Frank closed his eyes involuntarily. He felt his mind clear, old internal scars fading one by one, healed from deep within. His soul, once torn apart by years of suffering, was beginning to restore itself. And when he opened his eyes, he no longer trembled.
Einar's overwhelming presence no longer crushed him. Now, he simply felt... at peace. Comfortable. At home.
Einar had completely healed what Neville had not yet managed to. Though the boy was on the right path, he still had a ways to go. But it wasn't a reproach. On the contrary, thanks to Neville's effort, the healing had been possible. Einar had only finished the job.
"You should be proud of your son," he said, turning around. "Many would've taken years to learn what he already has. He healed you more than you realize."
And without waiting for a reply, Einar walked away with calm steps, leaving behind a trail of gentle light that slowly faded.
Frank and Alice looked at each other. Silent tears streamed down their cheeks as they nodded with contained emotion.
Yes. They were proud. More than words could ever express.
...
Since there was still quite a while before the official start of the school year, Einar decided it would be a waste of time to simply wait. With the war approaching ever faster, every second of preparation could make the difference. So he made the decision to begin extra classes for those who were nearby.
In an empty room at the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, he used magic to expand the space. In seconds, the small chamber transformed into a training hall worthy of a war zone: stone columns, floating orbs of light that energized the atmosphere.
The students —Ginny, Hermione, Fred, George, Harry, and Neville— were sitting in a row, their faces anxious. And for some reason, Tonks was also there, playing with her wand while smiling.
Einar looked at her from the center of the room, his cloak fluttering in a light magical breeze.
"So, why are you here?" he asked in a neutral tone, as if he already knew the answer.
"Well, technically I'm a former Hogwarts student. But... after seeing you take down a squad of Aurors at the Ministry, I had to see for myself how you teach. Let's just say I got curious." Tonks smirked, cocky, as she settled into the seat that, apparently, had been meant for Ron —who hadn't shown up.
He didn't mind. One more student wouldn't make a difference.
"Did you learn the spells I left you?" Einar asked, crossing his arms.
They all nodded at once, firm.
"Perfect. Form groups of two. We're going to have simulated battles. Only the magic I've taught you is allowed, no traditional Hogwarts spells."
Quickly, the students got up enthusiastically, pairing off and taking positions. But then Tonks raised her hand.
"Hey! I don't have a partner."
Einar looked at her with indifference. "You won't be able to match any of my students. Observe for now."
That stung.
"I'm a certified Auror! Trained at the magical academy, with years of experience, even under Mad-Eye Moody. Don't underestimate me."
Einar raised an eyebrow, mildly entertained. "Very well. Let's pause the class, then. Miss Tonks, face anyone you wish. Choose."
Tonks smiled smugly. "One? No. I want all of them at once. That way I'll show them just how powerful a real Auror is."
The students exchanged surprised glances. Ginny and Hermione hesitated, but seeing that their teacher approved, they lined up with the others.
"First mistake," Tonks muttered, drawing her wand with elegance. "If you were Aurors, you'd have surrounded me already."
That was enough to spark the pride of the young students. They nodded at one another and moved into formation, taking positions as if they had trained on a battlefield.
Harry and Neville were the first to advance. Spectral swords wrapped in golden energy emerged from their hands. Their movements were precise, almost military. Hermione covered them with protective spells that formed faint energy shields around their bodies. Ginny, for her part, summoned two wolves made of spectral energy, their eyes glowing like burning coals.
Fred and George laughed conspiratorially, raising their wands to cast illusion spells of violet hue.
Tonks deflected the first spells with elegance. But upon hitting her shield, the enchantments exploded harmlessly, releasing an iridescent gas that distorted her perception of time.
She suddenly felt she shouldn't be fighting, that all of this was a waste of time. Instinctively, she lowered her wand.
And in that instant, Harry and Neville struck.
Neville from the flank, Harry from the front. The spectral swords sliced through the air with a sharp hum. Tonks barely raised a shield in time to deflect Harry's strike, but the impact of the spell shattered it.
"Protego!"
The shield reformed, thicker. But it was already too late: Neville came in with a diagonal slash. Tonks spun and cast "Levioso," lifting Neville and temporarily removing him from the fight. He reappeared several meters away in a burst of air.
One of the wolves leapt at her. Tonks twisted and kicked it, feeling like she'd just struck solid stone. She seized the moment to shout, "Depulso!"
The wolf was hurled into one of the stone columns, vanishing on impact.
But another spell was coming. Two, in fact. Tonks looked up and saw the enchantments shimmering with the same illusory hue. She couldn't afford another mistake.
"Accio chair!"
The chair flew into her hand, and she used it as an improvised shield, deflecting the mental effects of the twins' spells.
But then...
To her left, Neville landed. To her right, Harry was aiming with a hand crackling with electricity. Neville raised his sword, now wreathed in flames.
"Protego!" Tonks shouted, conjuring a denser shield.
However, just as the shield materialized, a ray of purple light struck her from behind.
It was Hermione.
A paralysis spell. The shield flickered and vanished. Neville's fire and Harry's lightning struck her full on, sending her crashing to the ground.
The energy didn't cause serious harm, but it stunned her. Tonks lay on the floor, gasping, staring at the ceiling. Her wide eyes couldn't understand how she had lost.
Einar approached slowly. His cloak barely moved, yet the pressure he radiated filled the entire room.
"Looks like you lost, Miss Auror," he said in his deep, calm voice. "And I must add... the children held back. They didn't use destructive or truly offensive magic. Even the twins only cast spells to confuse you."
Tonks glanced up at him, a mixture of disbelief and respect in her eyes.
Behind Einar, Hermione knelt and began to apply a soft, warm healing spell.
"Well done," Einar murmured to his students. "The battle was clean, effective, and swift. That's how you face an enemy superior in individual power: with strategy, synchronization, and trust."
The students smiled. Fred and George bumped fists. Ginny petted one of the spectral wolves before letting it fade. Neville and Harry clapped each other on the shoulder, proud.
And Tonks, still on the floor, couldn't help but smile too.
