Chapter 420: Chapter 421: Gods Are Not So Supreme
"UK-Sweden Dispute? Swedish Space Satellite Launches Surprise Attack on London!"
"UK Civil War, Bombers Carpet Bomb London Suburbs!"
"Toxic Gas Leak! Massive Mutations in Flora and Fauna Outside London!"
"Tsunami Sweeps Through Rio de Janeiro!"
"Crisis in Rio! Mutated Sea Monsters Attack Humans!"
"We strongly protest against Sweden's space weapons, which pose a serious threat to global security! Escalating from a nuclear deterrence Cold War stance to space warfare is extremely dangerous! We demand Sweden to disclose its space weapon technology and re-establish a balanced space deterrence..."
"That semi-transparent shield must be a defensive weapon, experts speculate it could be an ion electromagnetic barrier..."
"To call them sea monsters seems sensationalist. In fact, they are just larger marine creatures and some species we haven't seen before. Gigantism in marine life is not uncommon in the Arctic..."
"Oh God! Oh Lord! Did you see?! Jesus! The real Jesus, walking in the sky..."
...
In Rio, as the giant statue extended its arms in the sky, countless humans below witnessed the scene, and the slaughter by the sea monsters temporarily halted as if deterred by the divine majesty.
Devout believers knelt on the blood-stained, limb-strewn ground, weeping with joy, "God! God has come to save us!"
Suddenly, Murphy's Odin's Eye magical antenna detected a significant rise in the world's magical power levels.
However, the next moment, their god was struck by a beam of light, shattering half of its head. The staircase of light beneath its feet, as if unable to bear its weight, crumbled with a crack, and the statue immediately fell from the sky, crashing into the ground and reducing several homes to rubble.
Blood poured from the statue's cracked skull, covering half of its benevolent smile in a grim, eerie red.
"Hmph, mere ants!"
The statue snorted, its halo rising behind its head, forming a disk that firmly blocked the beam.
It then stood up, with several crushed bodies falling from its knees, splattering into a mush of flesh and blood, but it stepped forward unconcerned, trampling several sea monsters and a few kneeling believers into pulp.
"Oh Lord! God walks among us!" But the distant believers remained excited, "He will lift us to His kingdom!"
Some even chased after the giant bloodied footprints, "Merciful Father, do not leave us behind!"
Others suppressed their fear to stand before the statue, "This is salvation, this is salvation, dying here will surely take me to heaven..." only to be crushed underfoot.
The statue headed towards a pyramid hidden in a mountain valley in Rio's inland, the headquarters of the Brazilian Ministry of Magic.
But just as it left the city center, a missile fell from the sky, shattering half of the divine light disk atop its head. Another missile followed, destroying the other half, knocking the statue to the ground. As another tactical missile approached, a fighter jet suddenly intercepted it with two air-to-air missiles, blowing the tactical missile mid-air.
Simultaneously, an intercontinental missile launched from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota reached near-Earth orbit, destroying several satellites attacking the statue.
The statue, now free, hastened its steps and soon reached the pyramid.
Raising its hands to form fists, it smashed them down with tremendous force.
"Boom!" With that action, the ground seemed to explode in a nuclear blast, and a giant blood-red cross bloomed in the air.
...
"A miracle!" President William of the Beautiful Country stated in front of cameras, "God has manifested to save His people! Yet, Sweden dares to attack a deity with satellites! Unforgivable! We will deploy fighter jets to protect the Jesus statue's safety, and we are drafting plans to destroy those satellites!"
...
"Boom boom boom!"
In the outskirts of London, with satellites and missiles working in tandem, Murphy finally blasted Dagda into pieces and destroyed Stonehenge. Just as he was relieved, he witnessed the statue's attack on the pyramid in his remote vision.
The Beautiful Country has always considered South America its backyard. Murphy's satellites and missiles' attack on Brazil severely provoked them, especially since it was directed at their revered deity. The Beautiful Country's response was somewhat expected.
But why would a deity attack the Ministry of Magic?
The next moment, the Siberian Odin's Eye monitoring system blared an alarming siren, "Detecting a sudden increase in magical energy concentration, rising by 500%!"
Simultaneously, in the underground Divine Research Institute, Odin's eyes suddenly opened wide. The "mental force field" binding him fluctuated momentarily, brief but enough for him to take action.
"Bang!" A bolt of lightning shattered the glass enclosure along with the cooling device below.
Liquid nitrogen exploded, enveloping the lab in a white fog. Without the cooling device, the magical coils overheated rapidly, loosening the previously unyielding mental force field. Odin's magical power finally revived a bit; he struggled fiercely, growing in size and smashing the glass enclosure to pieces.
The shrill alarm sounded. Leonard Tomich, conducting a divine blood and essence comparison test, paused, instinctively opening a red cover on the dashboard and retrieving a button-like device.
But then, "Boom!" A giant entered his office. The giant, with lightning raging in one eye, glared at him, "Mortals, for the sin of imprisoning gods, you shall pay with the blood of millions! And you, shall suffer eternal damnation!"
With that, he grasped Leonard tightly, crushing his bones, yet not killing him.
The excruciating pain nearly drove Leonard mad, but Odin's divine power kept his consciousness clear, ensuring he would endure endless agony.
"Beg for mercy, worm, and then regret in eternal torment!" the giant glared at him.
In a daze, Leonard suddenly remembered his first visit to the lab with Murphy, astonished by the gods' strength, both physical and willful, far beyond human imagination. They seemed born to rule over humanity. At the end of the visit, a crab deity almost broke free from the God Prison, leaving him trembling with fear.
He thought himself unworthy of studying deities, "They instill fear in me; I feel like an ant challenging an elephant. This task should be left to someone braver."
But Murphy comforted him, his words still clear in Leonard's mind.
"Fear is normal. Anyone would fear facing a tiger. Facing a danger we can hardly match, anyone would be afraid."
"But if we wear armor and hold a rifle that can kill the tiger, wouldn't the fear lessen?"
"Remember this fear, Mr. Leonard. Our research is to find their weaknesses, to discover ways to combat them, so future generations can face them with the courage to fight amidst fear."
"Heh..." Leonard suddenly laughed weakly, coughing up blood, muttering something indiscernible.
Odin frowned, "Speak up, worm!"
Coughing out blood mixed with debris, Leonard rasped, "A bunch of restless spirits..."
"Gods are not so supreme..."
With that, he twisted his finger and pressed the button.
The next instant, a sun ignited underground.
