Chapter 8: Beastmen
They woke up early the next morning, the sky painted with hues of orange and pink as the sun crept over the horizon. The trio stretched and packed up their makeshift camp, the excitement of their journey renewed.
"All right, let's get moving," Goro said, climbing back into Lagann's cockpit. Kamina and Simon followed, their anticipation building as Lagann rumbled to life.
They continued toward the distant patches of green they had seen the previous day, the rocky terrain slowly giving way to softer soil and scattered shrubs. The air felt fresher, and the sounds of life around them grew louder.
But as they crested a hill, their excitement turned to caution. Before them stood a massive structure, a half buried tower of rusted metal and stone, overgrown with vines and moss. The structure looked ancient, yet somehow ominous.
"What is that?" Simon whispered, his voice barely audible.
"It looks like a ruin," Goro said, narrowing his eyes. He steered Lagann closer, carefully maneuvering around debris and uneven ground.
Kamina leaned forward, his eyes gleaming. "This is it! The surface is full of stuff like this, right? Old buildings and treasures just waiting for us to claim them!"
Simon hesitated. "I don't know, Bro... It feels kind of creepy."
As they approached the ruin, Lagann's sensors began to flicker. A deep rumbling noise echoed from within the structure.
"Goro, what's that sound?" Simon asked nervously.
Before Goro could answer, the ground beneath them began to shake violently. The structure split open with a deafening crack, and from within emerged a massive Gunmen!
The trio halted Lagann just as they spotted the enemy Gunmen. It stood tall and menacing in the middle of a clearing, its bulky metal body glinting in the sunlight. The machine was had glowing red eyes scanning the area as if searching for something.
"Enemy Gunmen," Goro whispered, narrowing his eyes.
"Perfect," Kamina said, cracking his knuckles. "Let's go introduce ourselves!"
"No, we're hiding," Goro hissed, pulling Lagann behind a rocky outcropping before Kamina could make any rash moves.
"Hiding?" Kamina's voice rose, but Goro quickly covered his mouth. "Mmph!"
"Quiet," Goro said in a harsh whisper, keeping his eyes on the enemy Gunmen. "It hasn't noticed us yet, and we don't want to give ourselves away. We need a plan."
Kamina swatted Goro's hand away, his expression defiant. "A plan? We've got Lagann, haven't we? Why waste time cowering when we could be drilling a hole through that thing?"
Simon shrank into his seat, nervously glancing between the two. "Maybe Goro's right, Bro. That thing looks really strong…"
"That's exactly why we've got to take it down!" Kamina said, his voice barely restrained. "If we keep running or hiding, we'll never conquer the surface! What kind of men are we if we don't fight?"
Goro sighed, his patience wearing thin. "Kamina, I get it, but rushing in blind will just get us killed. That thing's bigger and likely better armed than Lagann. We need to be smart about this."
Kamina crossed his arms, grumbling under his breath but finally relenting. "Fine"
Goro peeking out from their hiding spot. He analyzed the enemy Gunmen's movements, noting its patterns and blind spots.
Simon tugged at Goro's sleeve. "What if it's not alone? What if there are more of them nearby?"
"That's why we're watching first," Goro said. "We need to know exactly what we're up against."
As Goro, Kamina, and Simon stayed hidden, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed in the distance, growing louder with each passing second. From the shadows, the trio watched as a larger, more imposing Gunman appeared on the scene. Its frame was much bulkier than the others, towering over the smaller Gunmen, and it had a face embedded on its chest, resembling a grotesque mask.
As Goro watched the massive Captain Gunman stride into view, a wave of excitement surged through him. The sheer power and presence of the massive machine, its imposing face staring down at the surroundings, sent a chill down his spine, but it was a thrill Goro couldn't shake.
That's the kind of Gunman I need... Goro thought to himself, his eyes gleaming with a mix of awe and hunger for the challenge. This... this is exactly what I need to become better!
His thoughts raced, filled with the fire of his inner fanboy, a part of him that had always admired the incredible machines he had only heard of. Now, he was standing right in front of one of the most intimidating Gunmen he'd ever seen, and it was everything he had imagined.
I need to fight something like that, he thought with a grin creeping up on his face. It's like a dream come true...
But Goro quickly shoved the thought aside, trying to maintain focus. He couldn't let his fanboy excitement distract him, not when there was so much on the line.
Focus, Goro, he reminded himself
The smaller Gunman, which had been patrolling, immediately snapped to attention when it saw the bigger Gunman approach. It saluted respectfully, but the larger Gunman barely acknowledged the gesture, its voice booming across the area.
"Report, soldier. Have you found any signs of the humans yet?" the bigger Gunman asked in a voice that was both powerful and menacing.
The smaller Gunman hesitated for a moment before answering, a sense of frustration in its voice. "No, Captain. We've searched the area thoroughly, but these humans, if they are here, are good at hiding. They're like cockroaches... annoying and quick to disappear."
The Captain's face twisted in irritation. "You should have found them by now. Are you telling me we're wasting time chasing shadows?"
"N-no, Captain!" the smaller Gunman stammered, its mechanical body shifting uncomfortably. "We'll keep looking. We just need to tighten the perimeter."
The Captain turned its gaze to the surrounding terrain, its mechanical eyes scanning the environment. "Tighten the perimeter... and be more thorough. These humans are resourceful. I can feel their presence. If they are on the surface, they will eventually reveal themselves. They always do."
The smaller Gunman nodded, a sense of urgency in its movements. "Understood, Captain. We'll flush them out."
"See that you do," the Captain replied coldly, before it turned and walked away, its massive feet leaving deep imprints in the ground with each step.
"They're looking for us"
"No, Simon," Goro whispered, his hand resting on Simon's shoulder. "They're not looking for us specifically. They're talking about all humans. The Beastmen seem to be searching for any signs of life, our kind on the surface."
Simon looked up at Goro, his expression a mix of confusion and concern. "So... they're hunting us? Is that why they're here?"
"Exactly," Goro responded, his voice calm but with an edge of urgency. "They call us cockroaches because we're a pest to them. They want to wipe us out." He glanced over at Kamina, who was trying his best to stay silent and composed, but Goro could see the frustration building in his eyes.
"That's not gonna happen," Kamina muttered under his breath, his fist tightening. "They won't be wiping anyone out."
"Your right kamnia, that's why we're going to hijack that big one over there." goro says.
Goro's words caught Kamina off guard for a moment, but the fire in his eyes quickly matched his determination. A grin spread across Kamina's face as he slapped Goro on the back.
"Now you're talking my language, Goro," Kamina said, his voice full of confidence. "Hijacking a Gunman like that? That's the kind of challenge I've been waiting for!"
Simon, still slightly confused, glanced between the two of them. "Wait, you guys are serious? We're going to take that thing?"
Goro's grin grew wider as he nodded. "Exactly. We need a gunman like that to stand a chance against whatever's out there. And if we're going to survive on this surface, we need to fight fire with fire."
Kamina laughed, thumping Goro on the back again. "I like the way you think. Let's show these beasts who's boss!"
"Ready, Simon?" Goro asked, turning to his friend.
Simon, now realizing the seriousness of the situation, took a deep breath and nodded. "I'm ready. Let's do this."
