Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Aina Who Prays for Peace
Even if Reid hadn't said anything, Angie and Noin wouldn't have shown mercy to the enemy. Both understood the brutality of the battlefield. They might have felt compassion if they saw unarmed civilians, but how could they hold back against enemies piloting a hundred-meter mech?
Thus, the moment Apsalus III emerged from the water's surface, it was greeted by over a dozen Anti-ship Missiles and charged shots from 120mm Electromagnetic Rifles.
Since the Union Flag's Anti-ship Missile payload was limited, Angie and Noin fired all their ammunition in one go, aiming to eliminate the enemy in a single wave. The subsequent Electromagnetic Rifle shots were merely finishing blows.
From an aerial perspective, the entire "crater" was momentarily engulfed in explosions, causing large-scale collapses along its edges.
Reid, still positioned midway up the mountain, felt as if he'd encountered a landslide, nearly being knocked down to the base by falling rocks.
In the end, Reid had no choice but to use the Ground GM Shield he'd picked up to cover his head, preventing rocks from damaging the communication antennas and cutting off his internal comms.
Fortunately, after the initial explosion, Angie and Noin had no other long-range assault methods left.
The entire "crater" was now shrouded in smoke from the explosions. Noin cautiously said to Angie, "Angie, let's move away from the crater and gain altitude. We'll observe the interior once the smoke clears."
With that, Noin ascended in her Mobile Suit form. Angie, obedient to Noin's orders, dutifully increased her altitude.
This judgment proved correct—the principle of "smoke without damage" applied to both sides. Not long after Angie and Noin gained altitude, a thin MEGA particle beam cannon shot swept outward from the crater in an erratic trajectory.
Angie and Noin were far enough away, and the MEGA particle beam cannon's path was clearly visible as it cut through the smoke. Moreover, obscured by the smoke, the enemy couldn't properly lock onto them. The shot seemed intended only to drive away any potential threats lingering above, so it ultimately hit nothing.
Confirming that no significant aerial forces were waiting outside, the massive Apsalus III burst through the smoke at high speed—clearly, the pilot feared another round of bombardment if they moved too slowly.
However, Apsalus III couldn't be described as unscathed; it was riddled with damage. The armor on both upper sides was scorched and shattered, with the worst breaches revealing internal circuitry. Water now seeped from the mech's armor gaps, accompanied by sparks.
It seemed Apsalus III had been designed with underwater emergence in mind, likely accounting for potential water ingress. Thus, even now, the mech hadn't shut down despite the flooding.
The reason Apsalus III survived the initial assault became apparent: it had likely retreated underwater after the first direct hits. The missiles, unable to lock onto targets underwater, would have lost their trajectory.
The impact of water on electromagnetic rifle rounds was even more significant. After entering the water, the bullets could hardly maintain their trajectory, and their power was greatly diminished. After all, the electromagnetic rifles Angie and Noin were using weren't designed for underwater combat.
The Apsalus III, bursting through the smoke, now spotted the Union Flag in the air. Although the Zeon forces hadn't encountered this Mobile Suit model often, since the Union Flag was currently in MS mode, it didn't overly surprise the Apsalus III's pilot.
At this point, the pilot likely judged from the Union Flag's distance that it had already exhausted its ammunition and was preparing to retreat, so they didn't continue pursuing with the MEGA particle beam cannon. Instead, they activated the Apsalus III's combat mode. The super-long folding swing arm sledgehammers for ground melee combat on both sides and the central balance rod lowered, making the machine appear even more massive.
However, when the Apsalus III's pilot attempted to lock onto the Earth Federation Forces' main forces on the ground to deliver a warning, they were suddenly dumbfounded.
Because the Earth Federation's main forces weren't anywhere near the mining town. The Apsalus III's observation systems could see the distant situation of the Earth Federation's Mothership—clearly, it had already been destroyed. Large numbers of Earth Federation troops were gathered near the wreckage, standing by, showing no signs of launching an attack.
Thus, to issue a warning, the Apsalus III had no choice but to fire the MEGA particle beam cannon again toward the Earth Federation troops on standby. The high-density MEGA particle beam struck the ground, triggering a series of particle explosions, resembling a natural disaster.
Yet, when the explosions subsided, the Earth Federation's Mobile Suits found themselves completely unharmed. The only thing left before them was a scorching explosion zone, still radiating with molten heat.
At this moment, a woman's voice broadcasted from the Apsalus III across the entire battlefield:
"Earth Federation Forces, listen well. This is the pilot of the Mobile Armor, Aina Sahalin. I propose a temporary ceasefire.
The attack just now was merely a warning. As long as you do not cross that boundary line, you will not be attacked.
The wounded from our base are beginning to evacuate. I beg of you—please halt your attacks during that time!"
Honestly, even though Reid had heard these exact words in the anime before, his assessment of Aina Sahalin now was the same as Karen Joshua of the 08th MS Squad's—this girl was hopelessly naive.
This wasn't some underground brawl between two small groups, where they'd fear causing deaths and getting arrested by the police.
There were precedents for temporary ceasefires on humanitarian grounds to evacuate the wounded, but you were piloting a Large Mobile Armor and had just fired a warning shot. Who's to say you wouldn't use the ceasefire to lock on, charge up, and wipe everyone out with another shot? Not to mention, your machine was already moderately damaged—how effective was this threat supposed to be?
In the original story, Aina had even stepped out of her cockpit before Ethan Riel verbally conceded, though in truth, he had no intention of agreeing to a ceasefire.
But this time, Ethan Riel couldn't respond to Aina Sahalin. To be precise, no one in the Earth Federation Forces even knew who should take command now. With the Mothership—the command center—destroyed, the highest-ranking officers left were MS Squad leaders, many of equal rank. There was no one who could make a decisive call.
Right now, the only thought in the minds of those Earth Federation squad leaders was—
"Big sis, you're asking the wrong person. Right now, whether this battle continues isn't up to us—those three mysterious Mobile Suits that appeared out of nowhere and started attacking both sides are the ones dictating the battlefield."
However, within Reid's squad, internal communications were also discussing this matter. Angie seemed to have taken a liking to Aina Sahalin, who was advocating for peace despite being badly beaten. Moreover, she disdained slaughtering wounded soldiers, so she spoke up directly in the team channel:
"Reid, what should we do? If it's about evacuating the wounded, maybe we should call a temporary ceasefire to let them withdraw? It shouldn't interfere with the mission that god assigned us, right?"
At this moment, Reid wasn't inclined to cease fire. On the battlefield, he had one principle: unless the enemy had been completely disarmed and stripped of all retaliatory capability, or unless objective circumstances forced him to negotiate, he had no interest in wasting words with the enemy.
Even when capturing enemy Mobile Suits, Reid adhered to this principle—whether it was Christina or Aina Sahalin, he always neutralized all their threatening firepower before engaging in dialogue. And each time, he showed little patience.
Still, considering Angie's feelings, Reid chose a more tactful approach and tone:
"We can let the wounded withdraw. We don't need to attack them—it really doesn't affect our mission. But we can't cease fire. Even if we were to stop, we'd have to take down that Apsalus III first.
"Noin, you pretend to persuade Aina Sahalin to surrender. My position is obscured by the mountain—she probably hasn't spotted me yet. I'll ambush and find a way to force the Apsalus III to land. Once it's disarmed, if Aina Sahalin is willing to surrender, we might even let her go."
