Chapter 47: Chapter 47: All's Fair in War
After the battle in the mining town concluded, Reid circled the area twice more and took out a Sniper GM attempting a sneak attack. Confirming no Earth Federation Forces' Mobile Suits remained nearby, he picked up a relatively intact Ground GM's shield and began scaling the mountain.
The Apsalus III would emerge from the mountain base, and against that behemoth, the first ambush was crucial. The Beam Rifle he carried wasn't a sniper type, with limited beam range, and the Bazooka clearly couldn't reach the mountaintop from the town either.
Thus, Reid had to climb the slope for a close-range strike. Otherwise, once the Apsalus III took to the skies, the flightless NT-1 Gundam would be reduced to a sitting duck on the ground. Without Angie and Noin forcing it down to lower altitudes, effective damage output would be impossible.
However, while Reid was still midway up the mountain, Angie and Noin had already completed their mission in their Union Flags and arrived to reinforce the mining town.
With no enemies in sight yet and witnessing Reid's NT-1 Gundam "laboriously" climbing in Mobile Suit form, Angie, flying low, couldn't resist teasing:
"Reid, Noin and I have wrapped up our mission. How much longer are you gonna climb? Need us to pull you up to the summit?"
Receiving Angie's transmission eased Reid's battlefield tension slightly, his expression thawing as he replied in his most neutral tone:
"Angie, are you and Noin both unharmed?"
Pleased that Reid's first words were concern for them, Angie answered cheerfully:
"Of course we're fine. Honestly, we barely faced any real resistance. That Earth Federation Forces' Ground Battleship was easier to take down than a Laurasia-class—it was crippled before we even landed.
The only real engagement was with fighters scrambled from a temporary airstrip later, but their speed, agility, and firepower were pathetic. Even fighting Moebius in simulations was more exciting.
Plus, on our way back, we noticed the Federation's main forces retreating en masse. Whether their CO ordered it before dying or for other reasons, we followed your advice—conserved ammo and didn't engage. Those ground-bound grunts couldn't touch us anyway."
Reid nodded. The real prize of this operation was the Apsalus III. Sparing the Federation's cannon fodder wasn't an issue—he wasn't a bloodthirsty maniac, and G-Coins weren't so scarce anymore.
He redirected their attention to the remaining threats: "Angie, Noin. Before climbing, I surveyed the mountainside—no obvious large entry points. If our final opponent is a Large Mobile Armor, it'll have to emerge from the summit. From your vantage, can you spot anything up there?"
Noin, who'd been studying the terrain, responded instantly: "The summit's a crater lake. But this is a mining town, and Southeast Asian volcanoes are mostly island-based. This inland location makes building near even a dormant volcano unlikely—let alone atop a Zeon mega-base. If this is volcanic, then these Zeon troops have nerves of steel."
Reid remarked that Noin was indeed professional, truly living up to her reputation as a former OZ Instructor. He then praised her:
"Precise analysis. That pretty much confirms the final enemy will emerge from the gap in that fake volcanic lake. Noin, you and Angie go check if there are any guards stationed there. If there are, take them out first. Then, when our opponent shows up, use the narrow crater to give it a little surprise."
Noin wasn't particularly moved by Reid's praise—this level of analysis was basic for her. Back when she was an instructor, she had drilled countless scenarios like this into new recruits.
Angie, however, felt a slight twinge of something when Reid praised Noin. It wasn't jealousy, just an instinctive, mild irritation. With a hint of playful whining, she said:
"Noin, teach me how to analyze battlefield situations later, will you? I wanna show off a little too."
Noin had known Angie long enough to recognize that despite her combat prowess rivaling that of a humanoid she-dragon, her heart was still tender and easily bruised. So she teased back:
"Of course, but if you're analyzing the battlefield, you won't have time for flirting with Reid."
The moment Noin said that, Reid didn't even need to guess—Angie was definitely blushing and about to get tsundere.
Sure enough, Angie's flustered voice immediately crackled through the team comms:
"Who's flirting with him?! Never mind, I'm going up to check first."
Then, Reid watched as Angie's Mobile Suit accelerated sharply, darting straight above the crater.
Noin could only shake her head with a smile before piloting her own unit to follow.
From Reid's angle, he couldn't see what was happening at the summit, but the moment Angie and Noin flew up, the sound of machine gun fire erupted overhead.
Angie's voice came through the comms:
"There's definitely something here—two weird Mobile Suits guarding the crater."
As soon as she finished speaking, Reid received the visual feed Noin had synced to him.
At a glance, Reid recognized them as the two Flight-Type Goufs from the original series and immediately warned:
"Those two can fly. Be careful of sudden attacks. Take them out if you get the chance."
No sooner had Reid spoken than two explosions rang out from the mountaintop, followed by Angie's voice:
"Alright, done. Easy peasy."
Reid knew full well that for someone of Angie's skill, taking down two Flight-Type Goufs was just a couple of shots. Still, he couldn't play favorites—praise was due where praise was due.
"Amazing, absolutely amazing. Angie, you're the best. Now prep the Anti-ship Missiles. When the real enemy shows its face, don't hold back—dump everything on it."
The moment Reid finished, Noin cut in:
"Angie, get away from the summit! The water's rippling—something's coming up from below!"
Hearing this, Angie swiftly transformed her unit into MA mode, instantly ascending to Noin's altitude before switching back to MS form.
Soon, a massive shadow appeared beneath the enormous "volcanic lake"—elongated in shape, still indistinct underwater, but easily over fifty meters long. Angie couldn't help but gripe:
"Did I run into another dragon? What the hell is this thing? Built this huge? Is this even a Mobile Suit?"
Reid heard Angie's sarcastic remark and thought to himself, the dragons you deal with are much tougher than this thing. His three mobile suits would be at an absolute disadvantage in a direct shootout with the Apsalus III. But if they attacked when it sortied, this Large Mobile Armor without even an I-Field (I-FIELD Particle Deflection Field) would just be an oversized, thinly-armored dumpling waiting to be cooked.
So Reid said directly:
"Angie, don't be shocked. That thing's only big. The armor may be thick but it's not impenetrable. Attack the moment it surfaces, without any hesitation. War has no rules of honor - ambush if you can. Don't give the enemy any chance to counterattack!"
