Chapter 60: Chapter 60: A Goddess or a God? Zeus, What... are you?
*Goddess of the Sky and Thunder: Zeus
Shaking the earth, tearing the seas apart, snuffing out even the storms that raged through the skies.
Acheron had been nothing more than an appetizer before the main course arrived.
Poseidon hadn't really expected much from that main course.
In fact, she'd thought perhaps the appetizer would be the richest part of the meal.
But now,
now, there was no doubt left in her heart.
This truly was the finest main course.
Whether it was Titan gods, the mighty Titans themselves, or Gaia's monstrous offspring,
Poseidon had clashed with them all countless times from atop her war chariot.
Some had been more terrifying, more powerful, more exalted.
But for defiance this pure, this brazen, coming from a mere human, a clay doll shaped in the image of the gods,
it thrilled her in a way nothing else had.
No divine power, no godly authority, no titles of Sea King or Child of Cronus,
just raw, primal flesh colliding.
"I have to say, Eros... I like you more and more."
She didn't know how many times their fists had met now,
but this time, Eros's body made no sound of protest.
Poseidon's fiery gaze bore straight into him without reservation.
"Amazing growth. You started out clumsily imitating me,
but as we fight, you learn and evolve at a stunning pace.
Are all humans like you?"
Their battle had transformed the terrain. What was once a river's mouth
was now a bay, the land gouged out as if by some colossal blade.
The fight had shifted from land to sea.
Poseidon sensed how Eros had steered the battle here, perhaps to protect someone.
But she no longer cared about such things.
In the past, she might have tried some threat or ploy.
Now,
she only wanted to overwhelm him, to crush him utterly so he could never rise against her again.
"If this keeps up, we could fight for three days and nights without a winner."
She exhaled, shaking her dislocated wrist.
"Actually, with how fast you're growing, you might win if I let this drag on."
"But I don't have that kind of time."
Eros knew it too. He lacked a decisive finishing blow.
Though he was gradually gaining the upper hand, time wasn't on his side.
The potion's effects wouldn't last forever.
Poseidon's weakened state would end soon.
And when it did, all his gains would become meaningless.
After all, gods didn't win through brute force. They wielded authority and power.
A slight advantage in close combat was nothing.
"You're right. I don't have time to waste.
Don't think I'll play fair."
Eros didn't rush to attack.
Poseidon, too, was content to let the seconds tick by.
"Wanting to learn from my little sister... admirable. But not everyone can become like her."
"Fearing fate, trying to escape it,
that only makes prophecy come true."
Cronus had feared his children would overthrow him, so he devoured them.
And that act had sparked the Titanomachy that brought about his downfall.
To Poseidon, Eros was interesting,
but not interesting enough to snatch from Zeus's hands.
And yet here he was, drawn in by his own vision of becoming her consort.
A self-fulfilling prophecy.
"Wait. I've been wondering, who is this 'little sister' you keep talking about?"
Eros flicked his wrist, discreetly calling forth Athena's blessing.
"Huh? Aren't you well acquainted? You wield her powers so fluently."
Poseidon tilted her head.
"She might be called the Father God, but that's just a title.
Like how the sirens call Acheron their father.
Don't tell me... all this time, you thought she was male?"
Oh, come on.
Eros froze.
In that instant, even the hidden glow of Athena's blessing, his secret ace, was revealed.
So Zeus had been female all along? Was that even possible?
By reason, Eros, a seasoned fan of gods and myths, who'd played his share of games with all-female pantheons,
shouldn't have been shocked.
Sure, the idea of a cute girl Zeus wasn't unimaginable.
But then, what had he been doing all this time?
He recalled all those moments he'd tried to confirm the truth,
and how all he'd ever gotten were vague answers about "Father God" or "most gods have a gender."
Just his own assumptions had kept him from seeing it.
Thinking back to the strange sense Zeus had always given him,
he finally understood.
So she really was a maiden forever waiting for a husband.
"Athena's blessing, is it?"
Poseidon had spotted the mark.
"If you'd sprung it on me mid-battle, maybe you could've ended this.
But now"
Her pupils widened, words dying on her lips.
In that instant, Eros's fist tore through her abdomen.
Emotions, thoughts, regrets,
all fueled his strike.
"If you're going to leave your sentences unfinished,
at least take some of the blame for what happens."
Driven by passion, his punch pierced through her.
A victory, of sorts.
"Oh, right. So... are you a goddess or a god?"
Finally realizing what mattered, Eros asked his question.
"A goddess."
Poseidon spat blood, staggered back, and yanked his hand free.
"You humans... why ask that now? What does it matter?"
But she looked down at the wound and smiled.
"Pity.
You were so close, so very close."
The sea churned beneath her.
Blue divine light flared from her body, spreading in all directions.
The potion's weakness window, over.
A geyser of seawater engulfed her,
and when she emerged, no trace of injury remained.
The ocean roared as water coiled around her, forming glistening scales of armor.
"Behold. This is the power that makes a king."
