Chapter 87: Peculiar beast
Somehow, this strange "beast" or structure looked disgusting, as it was made up of hundreds or thousands of bats constantly moving from place to place.
They seemed to be intertwined by a strange energy that united them as a single body.
When they realized and understood what it was, that giant bat attacked them once again, forcing Louis to take up his gun and fire at the incoming attack. His bullet hit that huge wing and shattered numerous bats, but the damage done was rebounded in a matter of seconds, so the actual damage was minimal.
Still, he wasn't looking to hurt it. He was looking to reposition himself, and he succeeded.
Laura ran hard behind one of the rock pillars that "held up" the cave ceiling. She lunged to the ground, her gun pointed at the huge bat.
Without thinking, she pulled the trigger, aiming for the head.
The bullet completely shattered the head, but the damage was again minimal, as a bunch of bats soon recreated it.
The core was not there, unfortunately.
Laura had to reposition herself again to another position, while Louis battled to the front.
Seeing itself hit by two people at such long distances, the giant bat became angry, and a frenzy of madness crossed the red eyes of all the bats that made it up.
Many bats on its left and right wings suddenly became two huge axes. Then the giant bat swung one of them towards Louis. Only the force of the impact shattered one of the pillars of the cave, but it continued on its way towards Louis.
'What the hell!' Louis had to jump quickly to dodge it and aim for its chest.
If it wasn't in his head, then surely the core was in his chest.
But, as he was about to fire, he saw out of the periphery of his left eye that another huge axe made of bats was hovering over his head.
He flinched, quickly moved his gun to that spot, and fired with everything he had.
BAM*
The bullet hit the axe and met no opposition; it managed to shatter one part, but the other hit him squarely.
Louis's body flew through the cave until it hit one of the walls. The force of the impact was powerful.
'Holy shit. This thing is hard.' He got up as fast as he could and dodged the other attack from the front, rushing forward again.
He fired again, the fifth bullet from the magazine. This one hit his head again, and the sixth hit part of his chest, but it was too far away to make any difference.
He had learned that his firepower was incredible when he was at distances within 30 meters. Outside of there, the power diminished considerably.
At this point, at 50 meters, his bullet was not as potent. Even so, he quickly and agilely managed to reach point-blank range again. Less than 10 meters distance was between him and the beast.
The beast felt angry that it couldn't attack him with its new weapon, so it stretched its strange paws out in front, trying to grab him.
But that was a mistake.
It exposed its chest to such an extent that Louis only had to raise his hand and fire.
Being so close, his firepower was enough to pierce it from side to side.
The hole in the chest seemed shocking to the bat. It hadn't expected it.
Its body seemed to shudder completely, and an intense fury emerged, shaking the room.
This tremor seemed to carry strange words, which floated in both of their heads, distracting them.
Death to the traitors!
Death to the bearer of the Stolen Key!
Death to those who gave death to the Empire!
Three war cries echoed with the tremor, something strange. A different form of communication. Perhaps it was even said in another language.
But they could understand it perfectly.
The bat immediately attacked with terrifying force that Louis had not expected. Being so close, he was forced to watch as the bat's claws took him until it slammed him into a wall.
[HP: 1,833/2,000]
[HP: 1,722/2,000]
[HP...]
Louis' face darkened slightly at being so suddenly affected and seeing his HP drop drastically to over 300 in a moment.
Still, as he thought to react, the two bat axes entered his vision.
'Shit.' He was stunned. He hadn't expected such a brutal onslaught to suddenly unleash.
Those axes quickly reached his body...
BAM*
The resound of a bullet came, followed by the blood of bats, and for a moment, Louis felt freedom, seeing the two axes shattered before him.
Still, the danger had not passed. He had to quickly get out of that bastard's attack area and run in another direction, while throwing occasional shots at it.
'Even though I kill and kill bats, why don't I level up?' He frowned. He looked at each bat and tried to look for the big bastard's level. But he couldn't find it.
Of the little ones... neither.
Unable to figure out what was happening, he ran to where Laura was.
"Did you notice?" she asked as soon as he arrived.
"Notice what? I've only noticed that those bastards have no level." He said.
She nodded. "Yes. I have a suspicion." She whispered.
"Hm?" He looked at her. "What is it?"
"They're not cultivated beasts. They're just wild bats."
"Ah? How are they so strong then?"
Her assumption or suspicion made no sense.
He had been knocked down over 300 life points in a single attack, just a moment ago!
She knew how far-fetched that sounded, but she smiled. "Don't look at me like that. I'm surprised too. But I don't feel like they're helping me level up." She spoke.
That made Louis frown.
What a coincidence. He felt and could see the same thing.
He didn't think he was too far from Level 25, but there it was; he had killed a bunch and seemed to be exactly the same distance as before Level 25.
If he wasn't a cultivated beast....
"Is that why it has no core?" He said, looking at the bat's chest as he hid himself in one of the pillars to avoid its attention.
"It must be that. But it's a powerful wild beast. It has developed an ability we can't underestimate."
"The bonding one..." He frowned.
It was the first time he understood what those anime said, where the strength of friendship always overcame everything.
The power of the union he saw before him was ridiculous, and it had all been achieved by the power of... who knows?
Even he doesn't understand it. The same thing that happened in those anime when they received a new power. But, be that as it may, they are dangerous.
"Tsk. I didn't think those anime would make sense in a real fantasy world." He grumbled, unintentionally letting his words slip out.
Laura looked at him, confused. "What? Figured out how to kill it?" She asked, perplexed.
But he quickly shook his head. "It's nothing. I was thinking, if it doesn't have a core, then there must be something that is its core, right? Something external."
"Oh, that." She nodded. "Yes. This kind of bonding is only achieved with external items."
"What would the item be then?" He looked around the room for something that could be an item, but what he found was a pair of red eyes staring at him less than 10 meters away.
"Oh Shit-" Out of fright, he raised his gun and fired without even aiming.
The bullet shattered a part of those eyes, but it allowed him to run away and watch that thing recover again as if it had some kind of immortality.
Laura also had to run off and find another hiding place, while Louis bought her time from close distances.
As soon as she reached a certain place far away, Laura fired again, buying Louis time to move.
He quickly started looking for an item in the room.
According to his current suspicions, it should be the key. But where is it?
While running and avoiding the giant bat, he thought it would be underground. So, after hiding behind a pillar, he shot into the ground.
BAM*
*BOM*
An explosion of dust and fire rose. But the dust and dirt kicked up by the bullet soon dissipated the fire, and the movement of the bat chasing him eventually dissipated the dust and managed to hit him in the chest.
Even so, the blow was quickly parried by Louis' arm, which arched across his chest. He rolled for several feet, but smiled.
"Got it!"
He looked ahead and shot at the ground once more. The dust rose again, and the bat scattered it as quickly as possible.
Apparently, his poor eyesight forced him to disperse it as soon as it appeared.
But when he dispelled it, Louis was no longer there.
Where? he seemed to ask himself, looking all around.
Just then, he saw him. He was running much faster than his normal speed, and thanks to that, he managed to get next to Laura in a moment.
"I need a gallon of poison, now!" he shouted.
