God Ash: Remnants of the fallen.

Chapter 892: The Inception of War (5).

Ruby galloped across the barren wastelands wildly.

The wind pulled her luscious fur back, and her paws left indentations in the ground.

Despite this, Cain managed to remain perfectly seated on her back. Sue cluctched onto his waist, her face plastered with horror as she tried not to get flung off violently.

'This is the worst.' She though to herself, shutting her eyes tight.

As the beast beneath them galloped towards the land bridge that divided the chasms, the forces of Devils on the other side seemed intent, on shooting them down before they could reach their goal.

A bullet whizzed by her cheek, forcing an unwitting scream from her mouth. Things could have turned out worse, but Cain relief on his incredible vision and foresight to maneuver Ruby such that no attack would land on them.

However, regardless of how good his vision was, when there were so many to dodge at once, the odds of even one successfully making contact was rather high.

Despite that, Cain remained calm, his black hair waving in the wind.

Staring up at him, Sue forgot the fear she felt for a moment.

The way the radiance of the crimson moon fell on his face. The hardness of his gaze, his back, straight as a sword, hard like ice, yet radiating warmth...

Her face blushed.

She hurriedly shook her head to get rid of the unwanted thoughts.

'I can't...'

"Hold on tight. If you hold me loosely you'll fall." Cain said quickly, pulling her even closer.

The blush on her face intensified,

"Shut up. Don't tell me what to do."

Luckily, he couldn't see her face from behind. Otherwise, it would be difficult to explain.

She gripped on tighter.

Cain muttered a few words, and dozens of golden halos surrounded them.

Less than a fraction of a second later, the halos shattered one after the other.

'We won't be able to make it past here without getting hit.' He thought to himself.

He could have tried to approach covertly, but something told him that wouldn't work.

Even worse, for some reason, the {Aberrant Fiend} Devils perched on many high grounds on the other side seemed to vanish, and then reappear every few seconds, making it rather hard for him to pin them down.

As such, instead of trying to take them out, it would be better for him to focus his energy on dodging the bullets or blocking them.

Luckily, he had mana for days. A shield or two won't kill him.

He glanced behind him, Sue held on tightly to him. He wondered for a moment how such little hands could grip on that strong.

'All things considered, she is a Tier 2 human.'

He huffed.

The time was quickly approaching.

In just a few moments, Ruby would be bounding across the land bridge.

The closer they got, the more frequent the sound of the Golden halos revolving around them shattering could be heard.

The hidden artillery fire was wicked and dangerous. To make matters worse, spells had already begun to fly, each and every one directed at them.

Cain sucked in a deep breath,

"Ruby, are you ready?" He muttered.

The beast beneath him roared,

"Yes, Master!"

The world beneath them trembled as the mutant creature shot forward in another burst of speed.

They had successfully gotten onto the land bridge.

A bullet barreled through the air, headed for his temple. He pulled his magic gun out and fired a shot.

The world seemed to slow down as a gist of flames exited from the muzzle of his gun.

A golden bullet covered in runic patterns shot out.

If swam through the air like a canary, striking the devilish bullet dead center, shattering it into pieces.

Another bullet was shot at them, this time, aimed at the gaps between the protective golden halos.

It was headed straight for Ruby's eyes.

He calmly shot another bullet, this one striking the side of the bullet shot by an {Aberrant Fiend} in the distance.

This time, it bounced off the side of the bullet, forcefully deflecting it. His hands whirled as he fired shot after shot, deflecting the attacks that came too close for comfort.

Another bullet fired. This time, he was unable to block or deflect it. Still, he managed to tilt his head to the side, preventing it from doing serious damage.

He winced. The bullet had drawn a bloody line on his face.

His natural healing kicked in, but the bullet was enchanted to inhibit healing so it was a bit slow.

Blood flowed down his cheek, painting the side of his face and his neck red.

The pain was like a shot of adrenaline right into his bloodstream.

"I'm going ahead." He muttered.

Then, in a not so shocking display of agility, she shot right off the back of the mutant beast.

Turning his fall into a roll, he barely had the time find his balance. The entire are around him was pelted with bullets. The landscape was forced to changed after the heavy bombardment.

No human could possibly survive from that.

Watching this play out from above, Inixth couldn't help but feel that the humans were far too primitive in their tactics.

"A suicide approach? Really?" He shook his head mirthfully.

Perhaps it was vain optimism that forced them to consider something like that. But it was all for nothing.

He grinned.

Although the humans riding on the back of the mutant beast had managed to make it this far, the order was to make sure none passed. And if they tried to retreat from the other side, he was to give chase and cut them down.

With forces this strong, it would be impossible for a few humans to break through. And if they tried running from the other side, it would be even easier to chase and hunt them down with all of them scattered.

There was only one way for this to end. The {Broodmothers} were sending more artillery-type Devils everyday. The humans wouldn't be able fathom what hit them as they get torn apart by bullets from afar.

Watching that was also rather pleasurable. But not as pleasurable as cutting into them with his own blades.

"That makes the first—"

He paused.

A figure shot out of the swirling dust.

Clad in silver armor. He shot forward, even faster than the mutant beast had been.

Inixth frowned,

'Coming out alive from such a thing should be impossible for a human's frail body.'

He gave a mental command.

The {Slugmarrow Devils} were a unique type of Devil that could fire off rapid rounds of concentrated mana and Devil Essence continuously for as long as they had the mana and essence in their Devil Cores to support it.

When the first row exhausted their rounds, a new row would take their place, facilitating an endless barrage.

Currently, the only artillery-type Devils in his possession were the {Aberrant Fiends} that could fire long-range, high precision shots, and these {Slugmarrow Devils} that could bring continuous rapid, but relatively inaccurate fire.

Still, at such a close range, even he wouldn't be able to avoid being hit.

And once the first shot connected, it was only a matter of time before the bullets would shred through the armor, and then flesh and bones.

Even if the armor was impossiodursble, the compounded lingering force from all those bullets would turn any human into blood putty.

And yet, he got to witness something quality amazing and terrifying.

This creature, was blitzing through the storm of bullets, shrugging off those that did hit completely.

Inixth couldn't help but chuckle,

"Interesting. How interesting!"

"Inixth, go deal with that human. It is clearly not something the lower ranks can deal with." Greotes said with a tired sigh.

Other than Inixth, Greotes, the {Plague Horror} Devil had also been assigned to keep the humans boxed in while their whittled down their forces.

Inixth chuckled,

"Don't suck the fun out of everything, Greotes. Let's see how this plays out."

The {Plague Horror} raised a brow,

"This is clearly a suicide run. Maybe this human is carrying more bombs."

Inixth snorted, "A few bombs is not entirely threaten me."

A dark grim spread across the Devil's face,

"I am eager to see what ghe worst a human can do, when pushed to the absolute limits is. Crushing them at that point will be even more fun, don't you think?"

Greotes went silent for a moment. Then he snorted.

His mind traveled back to a few months ago, when he met those humans.

He has been handily beaten, and the legion he had spent so long grooming was destroyed.

Although he hadn't died, that shame had stuck with him for a while.

'That human...' The darkness in his eyes burned like cold fury.

He turned to Inixth.

'It is hard for me to believe that this idiot killed him.'

He had long since learned that the humans of this world had the capacity to birth truly terrifying monsters in their own right.

Although that much would not be able to save them from their destined damnation.

He sighed again.

Then he stretched his hands,

"I will have my legions go forward as well."

Inixth snorted and waved his hands,

"Whatever. You and Obegrin are such cowards."

'That's because you haven't seen what I have, damned simpleton.'

The Devil Essence in the air suddenly became thicker, tinting the world with its blackness. The eyes of the {Plague Horror} became as dark as midnight.

The hordes of the undead at the forefront of the Devil Army stirred to life, their ungodly groans reaching into the skies.

Then they surged forward...
