Chapter 86: Outside
500 Attribute Points...
This was the highest quest reward Byakuya had ever seen, signaling the monumental difficulty of the task.
After all, the challenge was self-evident.
If it were simply a matter of secretly helping Furuta and Rize escape from the Sunlit Garden, it wouldn't be too difficult, especially since the Washuu clan wouldn't be able to trace the culprit.
But Byakuya had already openly taken Furuta and Rize as his disciples. Should anything happen to them, he'd immediately become the prime suspect. Even if he weren't deemed responsible, the burden of accountability would fall squarely on him.
The likely outcome? Being hunted by V — this was what made the mission so daunting.
At this point, Byakuya had no way to turn back.
Not that he was considering retreat. With his current strength, he was practically unbeatable in a one-on-one confrontation. At the very least, he was confident in his ability to protect himself.
All he needed to do was proceed naturally and complete the quest assigned by the system.
More importantly, this mission aligned with Byakuya's own wishes. He genuinely hoped to free Furuta and Rize from the Washuu clan's grasp.
As for whether Furuta could successfully win over Rize in the future, that was up to the boy's own efforts.
For now, Rize hadn't yet been pushed to the point of developing the twisted, violent personality she displayed later. This meant Furuta still had a decent chance.
"Let's go. I'll take you both to see the outside world" Byakuya announced.
"Alright!" Furuta exclaimed, brimming with excitement.
Rize, too, was caught off guard. She had never imagined a day when she could leave the Sunlit Garden — a place that had seemed destined to imprison her for life, like a bird trapped in a cage.
Before they left, servants helped Furuta and Rize change into ordinary children's clothing. The usual white uniforms worn in the Sunlit Garden resembled the attire of lab mice and would certainly attract attention outside.
Taking their hands, Byakuya led Furuta and Rize out of there.
Only under his supervision were they allowed to leave temporarily.
The V members guarding the Garden didn't stop them. After all, Byakuya had obtained approval from Kaiko, and there was no objection from the Washuu clan.
The Sunlit Garden was located deep within a forest, isolated from the outside world under the guise of a military zone. Ordinary people were strictly prohibited from approaching.
Once outside, Byakuya and the children walked through the woods.
The area was filled with plants and trees, with occasional glimpses of small animals. To Furuta, it wasn't particularly impressive, as it resembled the scenery within the Garden.
Though Furuta tried to hide his disappointment, Rize made no such effort, her face clearly showing her discontent.
"Is this all there is outside? It's not like what I read in books" she said, her tone filled with disillusionment.
Though Rize had been confined in the Garden her whole life, she had access to books that offered glimpses of the outside world, even if the servants and caretakers never spoke of it.
"Don't be so impatient. We've just stepped out. Soon, you'll see something different" Byakuya assured them, slightly exasperated by the children's eagerness.
"Alright" Furuta nodded, calming himself.
"Fine…" Rize reluctantly agreed to wait a little longer.
After some time, Byakuya finally brought the two to a residential area.
However, his first destination was the CCG headquarters, meaning he couldn't let them wander around freely just yet.
As they traveled through the city, Furuta and Rize's eyes lit up with wonder.
They marveled at the variety of buildings, the bustling crowds, and countless things they had never seen before.
Compared to the monotony of the Garden, the outside world was dazzlingly vibrant.
The two acted like curious children, their heads turning to take in every sight.
"Big Brother Byakuya, can we go see that?" Furuta asked, pointing at a vendor selling skewered candied fruits.
"Sure" Byakuya replied with a smile, indulging the boy's request.
He led them to the vendor to buy the treat. At first, Byakuya intended to buy two skewers, but he suddenly remembered that Rize, being a ghoul, couldn't eat human food like candied fruits.
In the end, he only bought one and handed it to Furuta.
"Thank you!" Furuta said excitedly, eager to try the candy.
Just as he was about to take a bite, he noticed Rize's gaze.
She was staring at him with a look of dissatisfaction, clearly displeased.
For Rize, it felt unfair. She could only consume human flesh, and in the Garden, she had been fed nothing but spoiled, rotting meat. Now, Furuta got to enjoy a treat she could never taste.
Even prominent members of the Washuu family, like Tsuneyoshi and Yoshitoki, sustained themselves on the corpses of fallen CCG investigators, often digging up graves for food.
Understanding her feelings, Furuta hesitated. After a moment of thought, he handed the candy back to Byakuya with a sheepish grin.
"You can have this instead" he said, attempting to ease the tension.
Byakuya could easily see through Furuta's intentions. His actions were too transparent.
Eventually, Byakuya led Furuta and Rize into the CCG's 1st Ward headquarters.
The sight of Byakuya, a Special Class Investigator, entering with two children immediately drew the attention of other investigators in the lobby.
"Who are those kids with Investigator Byakuya?" they whispered.
"Maybe they're his younger siblings?"
Ignoring the curious stares, Byakuya walked to the door of Yoshitoki's office.
"Furuta, Rize, wait here for a moment" he instructed, not intending to bring them inside.
Given Furuta's complicated relationship with Yoshitoki, it wasn't appropriate for them to meet. Moreover, the conversation Byakuya was about to have wasn't suitable for the children to overhear.
He wasn't worried about them wandering off, in a place like this, they were undoubtedly under constant surveillance.
"Okay" Furuta and Rize replied obediently, waiting outside as instructed.
