Chapter 181: New friend
The Aegis Firerange buzzed with a quiet intensity, its reinforced booths and high-tech systems humming softly under the sterile glow of overhead lights.
Eira stood at the center of booth eleven, her Lazara Mk.II pistol gripped firmly in both hands, her fitted shooting vest snugging over her Academy uniform.
Her blonde hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail, a few strands clinging to her sweat-dampened forehead, and her green eyes burned with a quiet determination.
Beside her, a beautiful woman was standing.
Her long, dark hair was tied back in a sleek braid, and her violet eyes scanned the booth with a calm, analytical gaze.
She leaned casually against the booth's partition, her custom-built ether sniper rifle resting on a stand nearby.
[A.n: Revisit chapter 131 if you have forgotten her]
"Keep your elbows soft," Sehra said, her voice cutting through the hum of the drones.
She stepped closer, her eyes narrowing slightly as she looked at Eira's form "You're tensing up again. The Lazara's light, but it's got a kick. Let your body absorb it."
Eira nodded, exhaling slowly as she adjusted her stance, her elbows bending slightly to follow Sehra's advice.
She glanced at her new friend, a faint smile tugging at her lips "You make it sound so easy, Senior Sehra."
"I saw you take out eight targets in, like, ten seconds last week. I'm still missing half my shots."
Sehra's lips curved into a small smile, her violet eyes softening. "I've had years to make it look easy."
"You're catching up faster than most. Your last set was solid, three out of five on moving drones is better than half the cadets here."
She tilted her head, her braid swaying slightly "But you're thinking too much. Stop chasing perfection and just shoot."
Eira let out a soft laugh, shaking her head as she raised the Lazara, her fingers settling instinctively around the grip.
She remembered Brandon's words from their early training "Relax your shoulders… keep your thumbs aligned… don't strangle the grip"
"Alright, bossy," she muttered as she squared her stance, rolling her shoulders back. "Let's try this again."
Sehra stepped back as she keyed the booth's control panel, "B-tier simulation, full drone acceleration."
The lights flickered, and five new drones darted through the air with increased speed, their irregular trajectories amplified by the artificial wind.
"Focus on tracking..."
Sehra instructed, her eyes fixed on Eira "They're fast, but you're faster. Breathe in, aim, exhale on the trigger."
Eira nodded and brought the Lazara up.
The drones swayed and darted, their central nodes glowing faintly as targets.
She took a deep breath, her chest rising, and let her eyes follow the nearest drone.
Bang.
The first shot clipped the drone's node, a red spark flaring as it spun out of control and dropped.
Bang. Bang.
Two more shots rang out, one grazing a drone's edge but the second landing squarely, another red spark signaling a hit.
Bang. Bang.
The final two shots were swift, one catching a drone mid-spin, the other missing as the target veered sharply.

Aptitude – Improved Tracking, Maintain Form
Eira exhaled, lowering the Lazara as she bit her lower lip "Same as last time," she muttered, her voice tinged with frustration.
"I thought I had that last one."
Sehra stepped forward, "You're too hard on yourself. Your impact radius dropped by almost two centimeters, and you tracked faster than last week. That's progress."
Eira glanced at her, a faint smile breaking through her frustration "You sound like Brandon," she said, her voice softening at his name.
"He's always telling me to trust myself. But… I want to be better. For him."
Her eyes drifted to the pistol in her hand, her grip tightening slightly "I don't want to freeze up when it counts."
Sehra tilted her head "That boy of yours, Brandon, he's lucky to have someone like you training this hard to stand by him."
Eira's cheeks flushed and her smile widened as she set the Lazara down on the padded bench behind her "Yeah, well, I love him."
"Next time I see him, I'm gonna surprise him with a perfect score."
Sehra hummed under her breath as she remembered his face 'Brandon...'

Brandon and Florence were sitting on the couch at the room's center, the dual holographic console floating before them.
Florence sat with her legs curled beneath her as she leaned forward, her fingers gripping the controller.
Her blonde hair was swept into a loose ponytail, and her violet eyes sparkled with competitive glee as her character moved across the screen.
"You're going down this time, sweetie," she teased as she landed a swift kick with her character, the combo flashing "Perfect!" on her side of the screen.
Brandon countered with a bizarre combo that involved a spinning low kick, a sudden grapple, and an aerial slam that defied the game's usual meta.
The screen flashed with chaotic particle effects, and Florence's character staggered, her health bar dropping sharply.
"What the- How?!" she gasped, her eyes widening in shock as she shot him a look.
"What kind of weird combo was that, Brandon? That's not even legal in the game!"
Brandon laughed leaning toward her to bump her shoulder "Legal? In Tekken? Nah, it's called style, Florence," he muttered as he followed up with another oddball move, catching her character mid-recovery.
The announcer roared, "K.O.!" and Brandon's side of the screen lit up with a victory animation.
He leaned back, tossing his controller onto his lap with a grin. "That was easy."
Florence's lips twitched in irritation "Those combos are pure nonsense! Where did you even learn that?"
Brandon smiled, grabbing an energy drink and cracking it open, "Let's just say I've had some… creative practice,"
He took a sip, his eyes flicking to the screen as he selected a new character "Ready for round two?"
Florence huffed, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face as she picked up her controller, "Scared? Please, sweetie, I'm just warming up," she said as she chose a different character.
The game loaded a new stage, a futuristic arena with shifting platforms and crackling energy fields, and the announcer's voice boomed again: "Get ready! Fight!"
The match erupted into chaos, their avatars clashing in a blur of punches, kicks, and flashy special moves.
Florence was relentless, her character chaining precise combos that forced Brandon's fighter into a defensive crouch "Ha! Not so cocky now, are you?"
But Brandon countered with another bizarre combo... a low sweep that transitioned into a cartwheel kick, followed by a sudden energy blast that sent Florence's character skidding across the arena.
"Seriously?!" Florence yelped in frustration as her health bar plummeted.
She leaned into Brandon, shoving his arm playfully to throw off his timing "You're cheating with those weird moves! Where's the honor, Brandon?"
Brandon laughed, dodging her shove and retaliating by tickling her side, "Honor? This is Tekken, not a duel,"
Their characters fumbled on-screen, and Florence seized the moment, activating her character's ultimate move.
"K.O.!" The announcer's voice roared, and Florence's side of the screen lit up with a victory pose.
She raised her hands up "That's what you get for messing with me, MUHAHAHA! I WON!"
-_- Brandon stared at the screen blankly 'She is really competitive...'

Sitting on the dinner table, Elize lowered the mobile from her ear.
She then looked at Eira and Ravene who were sitting opposite her, eating their dinner.
"Seems like Kael is spending tonight in Florence estate." she said, setting the mobile down beside her plate
Eira's body stiffened upon hearing this and she stopped mid-bite "I hope my mom doesn't do any weird things to him."
Elize glanced at her "It looks like your mother has grown quite close to Kael."
Hearing this, Eira gave a nod "Well yeah, she wanted to have a son... but she couldn't get it. Now she is taking care of him like her own son. Spoiling him rotten too."
"She even built him separate rooms for his hobbies."
Ravene, who had been quietly spearing a green bean with her fork, raised an eyebrow upon hearing this "He is getting spoiled as usual."
Elize's gaze narowed slightly but she said nothing and continued to eat.
She swallowed her food, setting her fork down as she remembered something "Eira, your combat examination is tomorrow right?"
Eira nodded his head "Yes, Aunt Elize... I have already trained with simulated Aberrants and in the drone shooting."
"I just… I want to pass with a high score. Not just for me, but for Kael. I want him to see I can keep up, you know?"
Ravene stopped eating for a second and replied "Keeping up with Kael? Good luck with that."
Hearing this, she smiled dryly "Sister Ravene, I know it's hard to keep up with him, considering his skills. But I will try my best."
Ravene nodded her head "Good luck on that, Little sister."
"Thank you..."
Meanwhile, Elize's thoughts are clouded with concern 'I need to explain to Kale about the reason Yeon borke up with him.'
'He would be really mad if he came to know the truth... How should I explain it to him?'
