Chapter 60: Fooling Osial
Beneath the depths of the Lone Cloud Pavilion, the terrifying might of the ancient god erupted!
The sea beast pursuing the Hydro Spirit suddenly felt an overwhelming pressure, as if an unimaginable colossus was baring its fangs at it.
A profound fear gripped its soul, instantly snapping it out of its rage. Without hesitation, the sea beast abandoned the chase and fled in terror.
Seeing the ferocious beast leave, the Hydro Spirit sighed in relief. She looked toward the massive entity, only to find that it merely glanced at her before closing its eyes once more, resuming its slumber.
"Hello?" she called out tentatively.
But there was no response.
Clearly, being pinned to the seabed by the rock spear had taken a severe toll on the entity. It could only minimize its energy consumption by staying in a state of hibernation, hoping to prolong its survival.
Time passed, though it was impossible to tell how much. Suddenly, the slumbering being sensed something unusual.
It awoke again and opened its eyes, only to feel an unexpected sense of comfort spreading across its massive form. Alarmed, it extended its awareness to investigate.
What it discovered shocked it.
Due to its enormous size and the countless years spent sealed away, its body had become a host to barnacles, seaweed, algae, and other marine lifeforms. These parasitic growths, while not harmful, constantly caused an irritating itch.
Yet now, the Hydro Spirit was using her powers to summon gentle currents, meticulously washing away the mud, barnacles, and seaweed clinging to its body.
For years, it had grown accustomed to the discomfort of these attachments.
But as the debris was cleaned away, revealing its original skin, an indescribable sense of ease and lightness welled up from within.
"What are you doing?" it finally asked the Hydro Spirit.
"Oh! You're awake!" The Hydro Spirit was delighted and swam closer.
"Thank you for saving me. If it weren't for you, I would have been devoured by that sea beast," she said earnestly.
"My master always taught us Hydro Spirits to repay kindness. You saved me, but when I tried to thank you, you were asleep."
"Then I noticed your body was covered in barnacles and seaweed—it must be uncomfortable, right? So I thought I'd do something to help," she explained.
"I see. Thank you for your help," the colossus replied.
"Hehe, I'm glad I could help!" The Hydro Spirit smiled warmly. "My name is Aurelie. May I know yours?"
"Me? My name is Osial," it answered.
"Osial?!" Aurelie feigned astonishment.
"My master once spoke of an ancient god from the era of the Archon War—a Overlord of the Vortex named Osial, who ruled over all creatures of the sea. Could it be that you are the legendary Osial?!"
As the saying goes, flattery always works wonders. Osial, clearly pleased by the praise, answered proudly, "Indeed, that is I!"
Aurelie's delight seemed genuine. "To think I would one day meet the legendary Overlord of the Vortex—what incredible fortune!"
Osial, having been sealed for over 1,700 years, finally encountered someone who could converse with him. The fact that she appeared to admire him so much lifted his spirits considerably.
Thus, he began to talk at length with Aurelie.
Time flowed differently underwater, and it was unclear how long their conversation lasted. At one point, Aurelie asked, "Brother Osial, my master spoke of you, but why were you sealed here?"
"Now that is a long story," Osial replied.
Being aquatic creatures with unique ways of communication, neither needed to open their mouths to speak. Their underwater conversation flowed effortlessly.
Osial's voice was thick with bitterness as he recounted the events of the Archon War to Aurelie.
"So that's how it was," Aurelie remarked, her tone carrying a hint of sympathy. "To think such events transpired back then."
Aurelie appeared deeply sorrowful.
"Though history is written by the victors, no matter how you look at it, being pinned here for so many years must have been unbearably hard for you."
"To endure such torment for so long... it must be excruciating."
"Brother Osial, seeing you like this truly breaks my heart," she said, her voice filled with emotion.
"To be honest, my master is none other than Lady Focalors, the current Hydro Archon and one of the Seven Archons!"
"You saved my life, and I can't just stand by and watch you suffer here in agony until death becomes your only release!"
Aurelie became increasingly agitated. "No, I must return to Fontaine and beg my Archon to come and free you!"
"Wait," Osial began, trying to interject. He knew that as one of the Seven Archons, the Hydro Archon would never risk angering the Geo Archon by helping him escape.
"Brother Osial, just wait for my good news!"
Before Osial could say anything further, Aurelie left those words and swam away.
At that moment, Osial could only view Aurelie as an enthusiastic but naïve girl. In simpler terms, a well-meaning fool. He felt a bit helpless and held no expectations for her return, dismissing this encounter as a fleeting moment in the long monotony of his imprisonment.
"Heh heh," Aurelie chuckled quietly to herself as she swam off.
As a former theater troupe leader, her acting skills were impeccable.
Indeed, everything that had occurred today was part of a mission assigned to her by Felina.
This was a trap meticulously crafted by Felina for Osial.
If Felina, as the Hydro Archon, had directly approached Osial offering to help him, it would have been far too suspicious.
Thus, Felina devised a plan where Aurelie would feign being pursued and "accidentally" stumble into Osial's sealed domain.
Once Osial rescued Aurelie, she would owe him a "life-debt," which she could then use as an excuse to bring Felina into the picture.
Of course, Felina couldn't just show up saying, "You saved my follower, so I must save you in return," and immediately break the seal holding Osial beneath the Lone Cloud Pavilion. Such an action, especially with Zhongli not intervening, would be too unbelievable. Moreover, it wouldn't earn Osial's loyalty, which was essential if he was to become an ally and asset for Felina.
Aurelie's task was clear: incur a life-debt to Osial, then use that as a reason to introduce Felina. This would set the stage for the next phase of their plan.
Aurelie had gone to great lengths to execute this mission. Just finding a suitable sea beast for the ruse had taken her three days.
As for why the sea beast had been chasing her, it was because she had sneakily attacked it, destroying one of its two "eggs."
Not eggs in the reproductive sense—the beast was male, and she had crushed one of its… appendages.
This cruel and enraging act nearly sent the beast into shock from pain, prompting its furious pursuit of Aurelie.
Some might wonder, what if Osial hadn't intervened to save Aurelie? Wouldn't the plan have failed?
In truth, Osial, as an ancient god, exuded a terrifying aura. The more intelligent a sea creature, the more acutely it would sense his overwhelming presence.
Even if Osial didn't actively step in, once the beast got closer, it would inevitably become too terrified to approach further. At that point, Aurelie could still pretend that Osial's mere existence had saved her, playing the role of a grateful innocent.
Thus, from the moment this plan was conceived, there was no avoiding Osial becoming her "savior."
As for the concern that Osial might attack Aurelie—there was no need to worry about that either.
The sealing power of the stone spear was extraordinary. Osial couldn't casually unleash his strength; otherwise, he would have long since created tsunamis to assault Liyue Harbor or used the ocean's force to break free of the spear's restraint.
At most, he could rely on his immense aura to intimidate sea creatures.
From the moment the plan was set into motion, Osial had unknowingly fallen into Felina's carefully laid trap.
Osial never truly believed that Aurelie could persuade the Hydro Archon to come to his aid.
After all, he understood all too well the threat he posed to the Geo Archon and to Liyue as a whole.
There was no way the Geo Archon would consent to his release, and as one of the Seven Archons, the Hydro Archon would not risk offending the Geo Archon to save him.
Moreover, in all things, there must be a balance of interests.
It was merely a chance encounter; Osial could not imagine that saving Aurelie, a small Hydro Spirit, would make the Hydro Archon so grateful that she would defy the Geo Archon on his behalf.
However, to Osial's astonishment, a few days later, Aurelie actually returned—with a young woman in tow.
"Brother Osial, I've brought my god to see you," Aurelie announced excitedly, introducing Felina with an exuberant smile.
"Ah?" Osial was stunned. He hadn't expected that this little Hydro Spirit would actually manage to bring the Hydro Archon to him.
He was even more incredulous that the dignified Hydro Archon would travel all this way just to meet a prisoner like him.
After instructing Aurelie to leave them, Felina smiled and addressed him, "It's an honor to finally meet you, Osial, the Overlord of the Vortex."
"I heard from Aurelie that you saved her, so I came specifically to express my gratitude."
Osial gazed at the young woman before him. Despite her diminutive size compared to his colossal form, he dared not show even a hint of disrespect.
He could sense the fluctuations of power emanating from Felina, and within those fluctuations, he perceived an inexplicable sense of danger.
"It was nothing," he replied evenly to her thanks.
"Oh, you can't dismiss it like that," Felina said, waving her hand. "Aurelie is one of my cherished and important followers. Since you saved her, it's only right that I express my gratitude."
But no sooner had she finished speaking than her expression shifted to one of regret. "This child has asked me to free you, but I must apologize."
"I am the god of a nation, and I have many considerations to weigh. I cannot release you, and I hope you can understand."
Osial wasn't surprised by her words.
His enmity with Morax ran deep, and nearly two millennia of imprisonment had only intensified that hatred.
The constant pain of being pinned beneath the sea by the stone spear was a relentless reminder of his grudge.
If he ever broke free from the spear's suppression, he would undoubtedly seek vengeance against Morax and Liyue.
In essence, saving him would effectively mean that Fontaine was declaring hostility toward Liyue.
For a god, there were too many factors to take into account. If Felina had come here immediately offering to save him, that would have been far more suspicious.
With this in mind, Osial spoke calmly, "It's fine. It was a small matter. I didn't expect any kind of repayment."
"I'm sorry," Felina replied, her tone sincere.
Felina sighed softly and said, "But regardless of the circumstances, I owe you a debt of gratitude. Though I cannot release you, I wish to do something for you in return."
"Is there anything you would like me to do?"
Osial initially wanted to decline, but after a moment of hesitation, he decided otherwise.
"I have a wife named Beisht. After the Archon War, I was sealed here while she managed to escape. Now, over 1,700 years have passed since the end of the war, and I do not know what has become of her," Osial said, then humbly requested Felina to investigate Beisht's current situation.
"The story of you and your wife is indeed moving. Very well, I promise to help. I'll send the Hydro Spirits to search the seas for her, and I'll inform you as soon as I have news," Felina replied.
After nodding in acknowledgment, Felina departed, and the sea returned to its calm.
Osial thought he would have to wait for a very long time.
To his surprise, only nine days later, Felina returned—with his wife, Beisht, in tow!
"My husband!" Beisht exclaimed.
"My wife!" Osial roared.
The two enormous sea creatures immediately embraced beneath the ocean, their forms pressing together. Physical contact seemed to be a way for marine beings to express longing and love.
However, the scene made Felina's lips twitch involuntarily. Seeing two massive creatures addressing each other as "husband" and "wife" in human terms struck her as oddly incongruous.
Having been separated for so many years, the couple naturally had much to say to one another. Felina did not interrupt and allowed them to reconnect.
It was unclear how much time had passed before Osial and Beisht finished their reunion. Finally, Osial turned to Felina and spoke:
"I am deeply grateful to you for finding my wife, but bringing her here has undoubtedly placed her in danger. To have seen her again has filled my heart with contentment. I implore you, please take her away from this place."
Felina, of course, understood what Osial meant.
Osial had been sealed for so many years. Why had Beisht, his wife, not come to rescue him, avenge him, or even visit him?
The answer was simple: she was afraid of dying.
In the game, Beisht is shown lurking in the waters near Liyue Harbor, but even Beidou could sense her presence from the unusual currents.
Other adepti also detected an ominous presence in the sea. This indicated that Beisht was not skilled at hiding—her aura was easily noticeable.
If even Beidou and the adepti could detect her, it was certain that Rex Lapis (Morax) could as well.
Beisht was the last loyal follower of the Overlord of the Vortex and Osial's wife.
She understood keenly that she was her husband's final hope for rescue. As long as she lived, that hope remained.
The passage of time would inevitably bring opportunities for her and her husband. As long as she stayed alive, hope endured; if she died, then all hope would truly be lost.
In the game's storyline, Beisht only dared to approach the Lone Cloud Pavilion after learning of Morax's death.
Now, Osial's request for Felina to take Beisht away stemmed from his fear that Beisht might be discovered.
