Chapter 13: The Forest King’s Fall
The massive boar monster stood tall, its crimson eyes blazing with fury. With a deafening roar, it raised its colossal front legs and slammed them into the ground. The impact sent shockwaves rippling outward, creating a spiderweb of cracks in the earth. The force of the wind generated by the attack sent several students flying through the air, their cries echoing in the clearing.
Aiden reacted swiftly, activating Overhaul to reshape the ground beneath him into gripping tendrils that anchored him in place. Nearby, Atlas drove his sword into the ground, steadying himself against the tremors. Luna and Elena conjured protective barriers of shadow and light, shielding themselves from the blast.
The boar began to lower its head, its three jagged tusks glowing faintly as it charged up a devastating attack. The students could feel the weight of its power as the ground beneath them seemed to rumble in anticipation.
"It's getting ready to charge!" Aiden shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos.
The boar roared again and propelled itself forward with terrifying speed, its massive body barreling toward the students. The ground quaked with each thunderous step as it destroyed everything in its path—trees, rocks, and earth alike.
"Move!" Atlas yelled, grabbing one of his teammates and leaping to the side. The students scattered, barely avoiding the beast's destructive rampage. In its wake, the forest lay in ruins, a path of devastation stretching far into the distance.
"Now!" Luna shouted, extending her hands. Shadowy tendrils erupted from the ground once more, snaking around the boar's legs and binding them tightly. The beast thrashed violently, trying to break free.
Elena joined in, her electric magic crackling to life. "Let's see how you like this!" She unleashed a surge of electricity, the bolts striking the boar and sending spasms through its massive frame. The creature's roar of pain reverberated through the forest.
Aiden and Atlas moved into position, their eyes locking for a brief moment. "Let's end this," Aiden said, his tone resolute.
"On it," Atlas replied, raising his sword, which now burned with an intense, golden flame. "Celestial Blaze!" he roared, imbuing his weapon with radiant energy.
Aiden knelt and placed his hands on the ground, his Overhaul skill activating. The earth around the boar began to ripple and shift, destabilizing its footing. The creature lost its balance, toppling slightly to the side.
Atlas seized the opportunity, charging forward with his blazing sword. "Blazing Sun Slash!" he shouted, swinging his blade with all his might. The attack struck the boar's thick hide, slicing through it and leaving a deep, smoldering wound on its flank. The beast roared in agony, its movements growing more sluggish.
Not missing a beat, Aiden raised his hands and manipulated the earth once more. "Overhaul: Spiked Grave!" The ground beneath the boar erupted, massive spikes of stone piercing through its thick hide and impaling its massive body. The boar let out a final, earsplitting roar before collapsing to the ground, its colossal form shaking the earth as it fell.
Silence fell over the clearing, broken only by the ragged breathing of the students. Then, a collective cheer erupted from the group, their voices filled with relief and triumph.
"We did it!" one student shouted, raising their fist in the air.
Aiden, exhausted, slumped to the ground, his body trembling from the strain of using his abilities. Atlas collapsed nearby, his sword clattering to the ground. His teammates rushed to his side, helping him to a shady spot beneath a tree.
Elena and Luna approached Aiden, who was sitting on the ground, catching his breath. "Aiden, are you okay?" Elena asked, kneeling beside him. Her voice was soft, tinged with worry.
"I'm fine," Aiden replied, offering a tired smile. "Just... need a moment."
Elena hesitated before placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. "You were incredible out there." Her cheeks flushed slightly as she spoke.
"Thanks," Aiden said, brushing off the compliment as he stood. "Let's check on the others."
Luna remained silent, her expression as unreadable as ever. "You saved us again," she said simply, her piercing gaze meeting Aiden's. "Thank you."
Aiden nodded, turning away as his system panel suddenly popped up in his field of vision:
[Mission Complete: Defeat the Forest King] [Rewards: New Skills Acquired - Dismantle, Harden]
Curious, Aiden selected the first skill for more information.
[Dismantle: Allows the user to break down objects and non-living materials into their raw components or separate them into distinct parts.]
"This could be useful," Aiden thought, a spark of excitement in his tired mind. He moved on to the next skill.
[Harden: Reinforces materials or objects, increasing their durability and strength.]
Aiden grinned faintly. "Not bad."
His gaze shifted to the corpse of the Forest King. He approached it cautiously, kneeling by one of its massive tusks. "This might come in handy," he muttered to himself. Glancing around to ensure no one was watching too closely, he activated his new skill. "Dismantle."
The tusk began to shrink and break apart under his touch, reducing to its base components. Aiden quickly reassembled the material into a compact 4x4-inch cube using his Overhaul ability. "Harden," he added, watching as the cube grew denser and sturdier. Satisfied, he slipped it into his jacket pocket.
Returning to his team, Aiden found Elena wrapping a bandage around a teammate's arm. "Everyone okay?" he asked.
"Just a few cuts and bruises," Elena replied, her voice soft. She glanced at him and smiled. "Thanks to you, we're still in one piece."
Aiden shrugged. "It was a team effort."
Elena's smile lingered, and for a moment, their eyes met. The intensity of her gaze made Aiden look away, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly. "We should get ready. The professors will be here soon."
Not long after, the professors and a team of mages arrived, their expressions a mix of relief and concern. The mages immediately began tending to the injured students, their healing magic soothing bruises and closing wounds. Once everyone was stable, the group was teleported back to the academy, leaving the professors behind to investigate the scene.
Professor Roan approached the corpse of the Forest King, his brow furrowed in thought. "How did this creature even get here?" he murmured, crouching by the beast's massive form. His eyes scanned the wounds covering its body, lingering on the deep slash in its side. "What a terrifyingly precise sword wound," he muttered, his fingers tracing the edges of the gash.
As he moved to inspect the head, he noticed one of the tusks was missing. Examining the clean cut where it had been, he frowned. "This looks... too perfect. Almost like it was never there to begin with."
Despite his curiosity, Professor Aldrin was relieved. No students had died, and the Forest King was defeated. Letting out a long sigh, he rose to his feet and glanced toward the forest. "At least this nightmare is over—for now."
