Chapter 273: 273. Leave It to You as a Family Heirloom
"Grandpa—" Noah ran up to Dad Liu and opened his arms to hug him.
"Hey, Noah, you're here too? I see." Grandpa Liu finally smiled, bent down to pick up the little guy, and cupped his face affectionately.
Compared to Jason Liu, who hadn't come home for a year, Liu Wan—who often brought her daughter and son back to her parents' house on weekends—made Liu's father and mother very happy. The family didn't feel so lonely after all.
"Hurry up, wash your hands and eat—" Liu Ma brought the last plate of fried small fish to the table, took off her apron, and called to the others in the yard.
Dad Liu held Noah in his arms, Liu Wan pulled Lila along, and Jason Liu and his brother-in-law followed behind into the living room.
In the countryside, the living room also served as the dining room, where guests were typically entertained.
Looking at the cumbersome round wooden table he had been using since elementary school—with paint peeling off—Jason Liu, while eating steamed buns, couldn't help but say, "Mom, why don't you get a new table? Are you really planning to use this broken table for the rest of your life?"
"Your dad won't let me change it!" Liu Ma said angrily while feeding small fish to Lila, who was sitting beside her.
Dad Liu bit into the steamed bun in his hand and placed a small plate of his favorite pickled vegetables in front of him. Hearing what his children said, he replied unhappily, "Isn't it still usable? What a waste to throw it away. When it breaks, then we'll buy a new one."
"Ha, then maybe you'll have to wait until your son gets married and has children. Maybe your grandson's generation will still be using it…" Liu Wan fed her son fried eggs from a bowl and couldn't help laughing.
"So you plan to pass it down from father to son, then from son to grandson—on and on with no end? You still…" Jason Liu rolled his eyes speechlessly.
His dad was too frugal, unwilling to throw away anything. As long as something could still be used, he would keep using it.
Maybe it had something to do with Dad Liu's impoverished childhood, when he often didn't have enough to eat or wear new clothes.
"Hahaha, then Jason Liu, you better put this table away. Maybe it'll become an heirloom of the old Liu family!" Liu Wan laughed.
Dad Liu's cheek muscles twitched, but in the end, he couldn't hold back and laughed along.
Liu Ma rolled her eyes at her husband, but she was long used to his thrifty ways.
After the family finished breakfast with smiles, Jason Liu suggested they all go to the newly built ecological park today.
"I want to see a big tiger, a little monkey! I also want to play bumper cars—" Lila immediately raised her hand and shouted.
"I want to ride the big bait truck too!" Noah chimed in with his sister.
The newly built ecological park included free leisure areas, paid wildlife zones, and a playground. It was a comprehensive, large-scale park.
"There must be a lot of people today during the holidays," Lucas said with a bitter smile, already expecting a crowd. It would be more about watching people than the scenery.
But the two little ones were so excited, so off they went.
Jason Liu didn't drive his own car; everyone rode in Lucas's SUV.
Sure enough, more than a kilometer away from the ecological park, traffic had already started to jam. There were indeed many people going out during the festival.
After parking in a roadside spot, they had to walk the rest of the way.
However, after entering the park, they realized that many sections were closed. The big tigers and bumper cars were also not available.
Park staff were also advising visitors not to rush in all at once and instead visit in batches.
After all, they were also worried about what might happen with so many people crammed into one place.
Helpless, Jason Liu and the others had no choice but to head back the way they came. The Mid-Autumn Festival outing plan had fallen through.
At noon, Liu Ma had specially bought a lot of groceries: a few catties of river prawns, several big carp, a dozen small fish, a few catties of pork, ribs, tomatoes, cucumbers, gourds, spinach, cabbage, etc. The whole trunk was packed.
Lunch was prepared by Liu Ma and Liu Wan together. The men of the Liu family, including the son-in-law, didn't know how to cook, so they just sat around chatting while watching the kids.
When it was finally time to eat, the round table in the living room was filled with freshly cooked dishes.
There were braised pork ribs, braised pork, fried crispy pork, fried river shrimp, and milky-white carp soup.
The rest were cold dishes like cucumbers, tomatoes, and stir-fried greens.
It was quite the feast.
During the meal, the conversation inevitably turned to Jason Liu and his girlfriend.
While peeling shrimp for her son, Liu Wan asked, "So do you plan to settle in City with Lin Xiaohan in the future?"
"Probably. I haven't really thought about it, but unless something unexpected happens, I'll be staying in City," Jason Liu said while drinking juice. No one else in the family drank alcohol except for Liu's father.
"Mom, look—your son is going to live in a big city from now on. If you want to hold your grandson, you'll have to follow him to City!" Liu Wan teased with a smile.
"Why would an old woman like me go live with my daughter-in-law in City? Won't that lead to conflicts? I lived with my own mother-in-law back in the day, and I was constantly angry!" Liu Ma quickly shook her head.
She didn't want to live with her daughter-in-law. When mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law live together, it's hard to avoid conflict, which disrupts family harmony.
Families with truly happy mother-in-law–daughter-in-law relationships are rare—usually only when they live separately.
It's one of humanity's most universally acknowledged challenges!
She didn't want to live with the younger generation. Everyone would just end up feeling awkward.
Jason Liu looked at his mother helplessly. "What are you talking about? Why would there be conflict? I came back this time planning to bring you both to City for a while. If you get used to it, then just stay with me! My villa is usually empty anyway. When I'm busy, I barely get a chance to go back and live in it."
"Hahaha, that's right, Mom and Dad, you should go live in your son's villa in City! Try out how rich people live…" Liu Wan laughed, encouraging their parents to go with her brother for a while.
"I'm not going. What's the point of living there? The house is big, sure, but it feels empty. I'd want to talk to someone, but I wouldn't even know the neighbors. What would I do all day?"
