Chapter 111: Chapter 111 - Speaking with the Sea Lord.
[Chapter Size: 2100 Words.]
Third Person POV.
Braavos.
...
...
"Use this." Jon handed Daenerys a very well-made dress, which the girl looked at with surprise, wondering how he had managed to get something like that.
"How did you get this?" she asked, opening the dress and seeing its finely worked fabric. It was a noble and very expensive dress.
"I took it from some noblewomen when I was at the Red Keep, this one being from my own cousin, who has a body somewhat similar to yours. It might be a little tight or a little loose, I don't know yet, but it will still fit." he said, as she nodded, taking the fabric and unfolding it.
"Anyway, we'll look for a tailor for you. We can make good use of many of the dresses I have stored." he added.
"Thank you..." she murmured, looking with a bright spark in her eyes at the thought of wearing a feminine dress.
It was already morning, and the city was starting to get busy. Jon asked for breakfast to be brought to them. While they waited, they had coffee, and both wore more suitable clothing.
Then, they left the luxurious inn, heading out into the streets of Braavos. It wasn't the mess of the lower part of the city, where merchants and poorer people lived near the port.
"And to think I'd be here again." Daenerys couldn't help but murmur.
Jon observed the streets, filled with many wealthy noblemen walking with guards and carriages, which was quite common in that part of the city.
"This isn't far from the mansion of the late Ser Willem Darry." Jon said.
"Really...?" she murmured, but seemed a bit sad.
Clearly, it was a painful memory in her life, even though Ser Willem Darry had been very good to her, and even taught her to read and write through his tutors. But after his death, the problems of the two children had only begun.
"Anyway, let's go. We're going straight to speak with the Sea Lord of Braavos." Jon said.
"You think he'll receive us?" Daenerys murmured with some suspicion.
"At first, no. But we'll present ourselves as Targaryens. And I... can be quite persuasive." he said with a small smile.
"All right." she nodded, believing Jon could handle everything.
"Now give me your arm." he asked, and she did, as he kept her close to him.
They walked through the streets like a noble couple. Despite her platinum hair and violet eyes drawing attention, the same could be said of Jon's eyes.
As they walked, they ignored the stares—some people wondering who they were, finding it strange they had no guards, while others noted how well they dressed and their rather exotic appearance, making their way through the streets.
No one bothered them, nonetheless, and it wasn't long before they finally arrived at the entrance of the Sea Lord's grand mansion. The inn they had stayed in was quite close by.
"Let's go." Jon said calmly, heading toward the gates, where at least six guards stood at the entrance. The mansion had a high wall, but from the iron gate, they could see a huge, well-maintained garden before reaching the house, which was massive with four floors.
"Did you know there are some luxury prostitutes here who hold more political power than many of the city's nobles?" Jon chatted with Daenerys about what he knew of Braavos.
"They're the courtesans, right?" Daenerys asked, already aware.
"Yes. This city is kind of strange—they even created a cult for them. If a fisherman says his wife is prettier than one of these courtesans, he's dead the next day, if the wrong ears hear it." he explained.
"How horrible..." Daenerys murmured.
"Yeah, but whatever. We're almost there. Just leave it to me." Jon said as he kept Daenerys on his arm, moving toward the guards who were already noticing them crossing the street.
It was strange to see a couple without guards; they could possibly be impostors.
"Who are you? What do you want here?" One of the guards stepped forward, slamming his spear against the ground. There were also Unsullied inside the courtyard, as Jon could notice through the bars. Either way, he turned to the man.
"Tell the Sea Lord that Daemon Targaryen and Daenerys Targaryen are here to see him." he said.
The soldiers looked confused and exchanged glances.
"We don't believe you. And you better not try to fool us, or you'll regret it, stranger. Leave now." he replied.
"Wait a moment." Jon said, leaving Daenerys's arm and stepping forward alone as the man pointed his spear.
"I'll put you in the dungeon!" the guard shouted, seeing Jon approaching.
"No, you won't." Jon said as he moved his finger and opened his hand. At the same time, the man felt his leg pulled forward, falling to the ground. This alarmed all the other guards.
But Jon quickly looked at the four of them, his eyes glowing dangerously. At the same time, they stopped any action they were about to take, beginning to drop their weapons and touch their own necks, looking horrified at Jon, who was pressing them with magic.
The throats of the five men were being squeezed at once, and they couldn't breathe, stumbling over each other.
"What is this?!" the man on the ground looked at his companions and then back at Jon, now filled with fear.
"Haven't you heard of the Sorcerer of Westeros? Well, let me introduce myself: I am Daemon Targaryen, heir to the Iron Throne. I'm here to see the Sea Lord of Braavos. And if you won't call him, that's fine. I'll start tearing down his entire estate. If you haven't heard about the chaos I've caused in Westeros, it'll be pretty bad for all of you if I have to demonstrate large-scale destruction to prove who I am." he said as he released the men, who dropped to their knees, finally able to breathe again as Jon canceled his invisible force over them.
This drew the attention of people in the street, and even some guards ran to the entrance, seeing the commotion, believing someone was attacking the guards.
"Anyway, I'm waiting for my entrance for a small meeting." Jon said, returning to Daenerys as more men came out to check what was happening.
"Wait." the guard said among them, stopping anyone else from attacking Jon after what he had shown.
"I must call the Sea Lord." he finally said, asking that no one attack the two of them, while the five guards who had been affected by Jon looked on in fear, and the others looked confused and cautious, as that first guard ran into the mansion.
The Sea Lord obviously frowned upon hearing the names of the two outside his walls, but the sorcerer certainly made him swallow hard, knowing very well the stories that had been circulating for over a moon ago on the continent beside Essos, where a single man had created more chaos than any other army, while the war of the self-proclaimed kings raged on.
"Bring them in." was the only thing he ordered, as the guard returned outside and he headed to a special room, giving word that Daemon and Daenerys were free to enter.
They moved forward and entered the place, while the guards—now fearful of the idea that Jon was a sorcerer—immediately stepped aside.
They entered the mansion, stepping into a large room where a man stood facing the window, who turned to look at them as the guard closed the door.
He studied Jon for a moment and then turned to Daenerys. He was a middle-aged man, already gray-haired, though still well-preserved and dressed in very luxurious clothing.
"So it's true." he murmured, looking at Jon again and then back at Daenerys.
"It seems it's no lie that the sorcerer rescued you from marriage to Khal Drogo. I remember when you and your brother came to me for help many years ago, and I refused the beggar king. He even offered you." the man said to Daenerys, who recoiled slightly.
But then the Sea Lord's gaze returned to Jon.
"And you are really Daemon Targaryen?" he asked, still unaware of that information.
"Don't you see that I'm a Targaryen?" Jon seemed to be telling a joke, but turned serious the next moment. "I'm the son of Lyanna and Rhaegar Targaryen—Daemon Targaryen."
"How can I believe that?" he said, finding it all very suspicious. Despite all the rumors about the sorcerer, many believed Jon Snow was trying to take the throne through Daenerys Targaryen, not that he himself was a member of the family.
"Before that, tell your eight men in the attic to come down—I can see them holding crossbows. If they make any move, I'll kill you." Jon said seriously to the Sea Lord.
The man was a bit impressed, but kept his composure. "Leave this room." he finally said, while the group of men began to exit, knowing they were facing a monster they couldn't afford to provoke.
"Now... take this." Jon said, pulling out a book that appeared out of nowhere, making the Sea Lord raise an eyebrow, though he already knew about Jon's extraordinary abilities. He took the book after Jon opened it to the correct page. The man read it, frowning at the information.
"But still, it's hard to believe you're this heir. You're older than someone who was born seventeen years ago..." he commented.
"Still, everyone considers me Jon Snow. I was in a place... how can I say... where I learned what I can do today. But there, time moved differently. That doesn't matter now. Everyone considers me Jon Snow, and you shouldn't question that I'm him—at the same time, Lord Stark brought back a baby with his sister's body locked in a tower in Dorne at the end of the war. In other words, I am Daemon Targaryen." Jon said.
"..." The Sea Lord remained silent for a while.
"What do you want with me?" he asked at last. He had no more questions—only wanted to know what that sorcerer was doing there and why he presented himself so openly as a Targaryen after everything involving Daenerys.
"I'm here to seal an agreement with Braavos. After all, I'm sure I can be profitable." Jon said.
"What kind of agreement?" the Sea Lord asked.
"I want to buy all the food available from the Free Cities and send it to the North. And I want the support of the Iron Bank in my cause. And for them to stop funding all the other claimants to the throne." Jon said, as the Sea Lord raised an eyebrow.
"Aren't you asking for a bit too much?" he asked cautiously.
"No. I intend to buy all the food, right here, with money. I don't need you to give it to me—I don't want to owe too many favors either."
"The money you stole from various houses in Westeros? That certainly wouldn't sit well with us, when those houses might come knocking at our door. Even if you've done all that, you're still just one man. You don't have the support of any kingdom, as far as we know, since you're fighting all of them—even the North." he said.
Jon smiled.
"You're not wrong. But I have my own support. Soon you'll see it, but I won't talk about it now. Still, I have money and I want to make many purchases. Are you really going to pass up this opportunity?" Jon asked, looking directly at the Sea Lord, questioning whether he'd really miss the chance to make a huge profit—especially with the war already driving food prices higher.
Jon needed the food to supply the entire North during the winter, already anticipating that things wouldn't be easy after crossing the Wall. And he didn't want the kingdom to starve. At the same time, he also needed surplus supplies to care for the South, with Riverrun being ravaged and, possibly, the Reach also affected by the war, while they had to feed armies and other kingdoms were frantically buying up stockpiles and forming alliances.
"I can get you the trade contract you want. But as for the support... well, that's not within my power. If you want anything, you'll have to speak with all twelve keyholders of the Iron Bank." he said.
"That's great, Sea Lord. So please, arrange a meeting so we can discuss it openly. I promise I'm very fair and I won't hurt anyone—even if the answer is 'no'." Jon said, making the Sea Lord frown.
This person was very dangerous—especially now that he had met him in person.
