Chapter 69: Shadows of Betrayal
Location: Gaia HQ – Infirmary Wing
Elaine lay still beneath a shimmering stasis field. Wind glyphs spiraled over her chest, suppressing internal injuries caused by her final spell. The clash with Nyxa Vell left the grove a flattened scar of torn roots and shattered bark.
Cyg stood at the foot of her bed, unmoving.
Charlotte leaned against the far wall, arms crossed, frustration plain across her face. Eun-Ha sat quietly beside the bed, her expression unreadable, hands folded atop Solmaria.
"She nearly died to protect us," Eun-Ha said softly. "That wasn't an act."
"Or maybe she's covering her tracks," Charlotte snapped. "Let's not pretend she didn't send Orion a breach location."
Cyg's voice was like steel in frost.
"Both things can be true."
Charlotte's gaze flicked to him.
"You still believe in her."
"I believe in facts. Not emotions."
"Then face one—she betrayed us."
Eun-Ha's eyes glowed faintly as she spoke.
"Then let Thea decide. None of us can see the full truth yet."
Location: Gaia HQ – Council Chambers
Thea stood at the central podium, flanked by Irene and Astron. The Octagon was gathered below, silent. Elaine, though barely able to stand, had insisted on appearing.
Her hands were bound with ethereal seals, a sign of her own admission. Her gaze didn't waver.
"I leaked the coordinates," she said clearly. "And I met with Orion."
Murmurs spread through the room. Zaria whispered to her twin Zayne. Wang Han clenched his fists. Aria stared at the floor.
"Why?" Thea asked.
Elaine drew a shaky breath.
"They promised a method to close the rifts. I thought if I could get close… learn their methods… maybe I could stop the war before it began."
"So you chose silence?" Irene asked, her voice calm but firm. "You broke the one rule that binds us: trust."
"I thought I could control it," Elaine whispered.
Thea looked at her, then at the others.
"What do you all believe should be done?"
For once, even Harriet had no fiery answer. Mia looked to Hikari. Cyg said nothing.
Then Astron stepped forward.
"Let her fight. Not for forgiveness. But for Gaia."
Thea nodded.
"Then a trial by fire it will be."
Location: Abyss Zone Theta-7 – The Trial Zone
The mission was suicide.
Zone Theta-7 was an unstable Abyssal breach with over thirty failed recon teams. The Abyss within was thick with corrupted ether, home to a Rank 1 monstrosity known as the Gravemaw Leviathan.
Elaine, still weak but burning with resolve, was dropped in alone.
But not without watchers.
Cyg, Charlotte, and Eun-Ha observed from a distance. Thea's order was clear: intervene only if death was certain.
Inside, Elaine faced nightmarish terrain—floating shards of stone, rivers of reverse gravity, screaming echoes of past Knights lost to madness.
Aetheris pulsed faintly, resisting the corrupted wind.
"I know… I failed you," she murmured to the weapon. "But give me one last chance."
The wind answered—not with rejection, but with resolve.
Location: Inner Rift – Abyssal Citadel
The Gravemaw Leviathan emerged—towering, serpent-like, dozens of mouths and eyes stitched across an ever-shifting hide. Black tendrils writhed from its body, clawing through the air.
Elaine raised Aetheris, breathing in the chaos.
"You want me broken?"
Her voice strengthened with each word.
"Then shatter everything but my will."
The Leviathan struck.
And the wind howled back.
Elaine dodged, darted, spun. Her blade became invisible in motion. She harnessed the chaos—redirected it. Her control, once loose, now tightened like a noose.
Each strike cut deeper into the creature's hide.
And as it bellowed—
Elaine sang.
"Whispered winds, carry my sin… bring Gaia peace again."
Location: Gaia HQ – Debriefing Chamber, Nightfall
Elaine stood bruised and bloodied, but alive.
Aetheris shimmered at her side. The seal on her wrists had been removed. Around her, the Octagon remained quiet, taking her in like a puzzle they now understood differently.
Charlotte approached first.
"You're still reckless."
"Always," Elaine replied. "But I won't be reckless alone anymore."
Cyg didn't smile. But his voice softened.
"Next time, ask for help."
"Next time," Elaine whispered, "I will."
Eun-Ha stepped forward and placed a hand on Elaine's shoulder.
"The wind brought you back to us. Don't let it carry you away again."
Final Scene: Orion Outpost, Unknown Coordinates
Nyxa Vell kneeled before Erebus.
"She survived. And she's stronger."
"Good," Erebus said with a voice like the cracking void. "Let her think she's safe."
He turned, eyes glowing with shifting stars.
"The pact was never about one Knight. Soon, the wind will bring them all."
