Chapter 176: Midnight Appetites
The Grand Feast had ended. Servants cleared silver trays, musicians packed their lyres, and King Leonardo had retired for the evening, his parting words still echoing:
"Eat, drink, fall in love, if you must—so long as you live."
But the fire of the festival didn't die with the final toast. It only smoldered deeper.
🌌 The Courtyard of Whispers
Under the lantern-lit canopy, small groups formed on Gaia's starlit courtyard. The feast had fed their bodies—but something else stirred now. The festival had opened hearts.
Cyg, arms crossed, stood under the cherry-lit tree near the back courtyard fountain. He'd intentionally walked alone.
He wasn't alone for long.
💞 One by One… They Came
Sylvia Synthesis 12 was first.
"Still can't handle crowds?" she teased softly, wrapping a scarf tighter over her shoulders. "You should've seen how you looked when I sang… like someone hearing music for the first time."
Cyg turned to her, eyes narrowing just slightly. "You rehearsed that line."
Sylvia smiled but didn't deny it. "I wrote it after your heartbeat sync scene. Arc 10. Remember?"
Before he could reply—
Harriet 10 appeared with a spark in her step.
"Oooh, are we having a heart-to-heart under the moon?" She leaned closer to Sylvia, challenging. "Maybe I should've invited him for fire-dancing instead."
Elaine 7, skipping over with a pastry in hand, added cheerfully, "Or we could all have shared this cinnamon cloud cookie and then judged his expressions!"
The moment was broken—only for it to become something deeper.
💬 The Rival Sparks Begin
Charlotte 28 walked up, mechanical gloves off, her usual eccentric energy replaced with something… softer.
"I modified a starlight viewer," she said, looking not at them—but at Cyg. "It reflects internal ether signatures. Yours… has a strange pulse. I want to understand it."
Cyg stared. "So… you made a telescope to spy on my heartbeat?"
Charlotte flushed. "Not spy. Study."
Behind them, Eun-Ha 15 approached in her gentle, composed gait. She stood silently for a moment, observing the dynamic… then placed a hand on Cyg's shoulder.
"You're not required to answer everyone tonight," she whispered, "but… you may if you want."
Then came Mia 18, humming to herself, her cheeks pink. She offered a small, luminescent jelly tart.
"I call it 'Midnight Wish.' I made it with dream syrup from earlier. Only one exists," she said, looking at Cyg. "I saved it… for you."
💥 Interruption by the Others
Suddenly—
Raul 27, crashing through the bushes: "HEY! I KNEW THIS GUY WAS POPULAR, BUT SEVEN?!"
Gram 21, laughing behind him, added, "A love octagon, huh? Never thought I'd see one forming in real time!"
Diane 4, stern and protective, walked over and crossed her arms. "You all are still Knights. Maintain decorum."
Wang Han 5, roasting a final skewer over a small firepit, shrugged. "Let the kids flirt. It's a festival."
Thea 0, elegant as always, arrived with a cup of herbal wine. "Let them speak their hearts. Even soldiers need to live."
🗨️ Dialogue From All Knights
Astron 1: "…They're too noisy."
Julius 2: "They're amazing! I'm rooting for Sylvia. Or Harriet. No—Charlotte!"
Irene 3: "Be kind, Julius. Love is not a tournament."
Aria 6: "But it does have timing."
Ali 13: "I'm just here for peace. And tea."
Iris 14: "The stars guide many fates… some closer than others."
Tryce 16: "Betting pool on who wins?"
Lionel 17: "Nah, I'm betting they all lose and he ends up confused."
Shin 19: "Already confused. That's the charm."
Joseph 20: "I'll stand guard. Emotionally."
Lucas 22: "This is turning into a Gaian rom-com."
Aulus 23: "I prefer trees."
Lugh 24: "I'm shipping Cyg with… himself."
Sophia 25: "I ran calculations. Statistically, Sylvia and Charlotte are—"
Zayne 29: "Let's not run simulations on love."
Zaria 30: "…Unless we win."
🕊️ Final Moments
Cyg, finally speaking after all the chaos, looked up at the stars, then back at the girls silently watching him.
"Why are you all… like this?"
Hikari, having slipped in quietly, looked down shyly, voice gentle:
"Because… we're here. And you're here. And even if you don't say it, we know—we're not just Knights to you anymore."
They all stared at him—each girl touched in their own way during her development arc. Each feeling whispered, not spoken.
A long silence.
Then, King Leonardo's voice echoed across the courtyard via intercom:
"Sleep well, Guardians of Gaia. Tomorrow is Talent Day."
