Chapter 31: Humans in the Hellish Trial
"Everyone, this is Kaiju!" Qwanisha enthusiastically introduced Kaiju with the other three people aside from Max.
Faith Miller was there, staring at kaiju intensely, causing the latter to feel uncomfortable. On her left was Lucy. If Faith Miller possessed, according to Kaiju's impression, a stubborn disposition, despite concealing it with her curious countenance, Lucy seemed to be naive and cowardly. She embraced a wooden staff of her size with her arms exaggeratedly, while, with Kaiju's keen perception, her body was fidgeting as her eyes darted everywhere.
Kaiju was baffled by her behavior. To survive on this Hellish Trial, possibly longer than he was, with such a temperament made Kaiju perplexed.
"Don't be fooled by her. She's a devil," said the person beside Lucy, waking Kaiju in a daze.
He felt embarrassed when he realized he was staring intensely for a while now at Lucy. He glanced at Lucy once again and caught her bashful expression. Well, if it was other people, especially a stranger, glaring at him like what he did, he would feel embarrassed as well.
Kaiju curiously slid his gaze to the person beside Lucy and was startled by the impressive, fierce aura exuded by him. Kaiju felt like staring at the hurricane up close. Even Snow sitting on his right shoulder and Little Gorilla on his left shoulder informed him about the peril the man could bring towards them.
Kaiju has been used to such an aura so he didn't panic and even stared at the man straight into his eyes. However, his action stirred the man's ego, causing the latter to abruptly widen his eyes and a gush of wind suddenly manifested, causing Kaiju to lower his gaze. His breathing roughened, and perspirations appeared all over his face.
'I thought I was about to die.'
"Griffin!" Qwanisha shouted and glared at the man with her fierce countenance.
Griffin glanced at her and turned his head away indifferently. Qwanisha trembled in exasperation but, instead of scolding Griffin more, she comforted Kaiju.
"Don't worry, kid. That guy is just too arrogant." Qwanisha stepped forward and patted Kaiju's back.
Kaiju stared at her and nodded. He didn't say anything, however.
He then stared at Griffin, but, as a sensitive person, his gaze became mild, and asked Griffin with a gentle tone, "Why did you say so?"
Griffin felt satisfied by Kaiju's action and quickly had a good impression towards him. Of course, it did not suffice to accept him as his friend. He must be the same level as he was before Kaiju could become his friend. However, what he was referring to was not simple as friends, but as rivals.
Griffin glanced at Lucy and snorted.
"Gut feeling."
"Gut feeling?" Kaiju felt skeptical.
He stared at Lucy once again, as the latter was glaring adorably at Griffin, while Griffin just ignored her. He found it difficult to believe Griffin's impression toward Lucy since the latter appeared to simply be naive, but if she really was, could she survive on this Hellish Trial?
Kaiju couldn't help but ask Lucy, "How long have you been on this trial?"
Lucy felt delighted Kaiju had taken the initiative to ask her. After all, she wanted to communicate with him but she felt shy, causing her to restrain herself. She didn't dilly-dally and replied, "For a year. Faith, Griffin, and I entered the trial at the same time."
Kaiju's eyes gleamed in surprise.
'That means they are strong. Furthermore, they could venture alone in this place without the guidance of Qwanisha and Max, that implies their power.'
Kaiju acknowledged their power.
"They are strong, Kaiju," said Qwanisha with a tone filled with pride. "Also, Griffin is right, don't be fooled by Lucy. However, she is strong, not a devil." Qwanisha glared at Griffin.
Griffin shrugged and did not say anything.
"Let me introduce them to you." Qwanisha pointed at Faith and continued, "She is Faith Miller. She is a nun, as you can see, and even a Saint's candidate in the West. You should know about the West's place, right? She is the healer of the team. She could even buff you up with attribute points, her power efficiency could be increased, but…"
"But?" Kaiju's eyebrows furrowed, perplexed by Qwanisha's hesitation to continue her sentence.
He turned to Faith and was startled. Faith suddenly appeared in front of him, the same height as him, while her golden eyes sparkled in excitement. She continued Qwanisha's introduction, "as long as you convert yourself to our religion, with your strong faith towards Him, my powers will be hundred, no… thousand times better if I cast it into you!"
Kaiju took a step back, feeling a bit terrified by her. Kaiju even compared her to the Thrall and thought the latter was nothing compared to her.
"You're scaring her, Faith." Griffin intervened and snorted. "No one wants to convert to your religion and behave like you. You can't rely on someone to obtain power. You have to get it yourself."
Faith's face turned ugly but it showed a split second before it returned to the usual kind and amiable Faith.
She slowly turned her neck and stared at Griffin, tilting her head slightly and smiled while closing her eyes.
She replied with a not so friendly tone, "Says the one who is the son of an Ascendant."
Griffin's expression turned ugly and fiercely glared at Faith. The topic that was so sensitive towards him was actually brought up by Faith. As a result, he was ready to kill her.
However, despite his murderous aura, Faith didn't waver and calmly met the storm moving towards her.
"Stop fighting, you brats!" Qwanisha suddenly appeared in front of them and sighed. "Can you two stop embarrassing yourself in front of Kaiju? You're scaring him."
Griffin snorted and turned his head away. Faith, meanwhile, focused on Kaiju and was about to ask him to convert to her religion but Qwanisha pulled her away from him. Qwanisha glanced at Max, standing while leaning on the colossal trunk from afar, watching the scene in amusement. He sighed helplessly and appeared beside Kaiju.
However, Kaiju was still in a daze, shocked by the revelation of Faith. To think Griffin was actually the son of an Ascendant? He felt it was unbelievable, but then again, it would explain Griffin's power.
In just a year in a trial, his power actually soared to such height? He even thought he was on the same power with the other higher races present on the Hellish Trial.
"Kid." Max noticed he was staring dazedly and understood what was the reason. He glanced at Griffin, who appeared to be minding his own business, and mumbled, enough for Kaiju to hear, "I find it difficult to believe, too. However, his reaction, after Faith always brought the issue, confirmed it. I guess that explains his talent."
Kaiju listened quietly and nodded.
"Forget about that." Max turned to Kaiju and was startled to see Lucy standing beside the latter.
Lucy was leaning her face at Kaiju forward and smiled, "Hi, I'm Lucy."
Hiss! Growl!
Snow and Little Gorilla uttered fierce noises, while Kaiju took a step back. His heart raced, his senses screamed in peril. The urge to run away manifested and intensified, but, for some reason, his body was locked in place.
He could only stare at Lucy's pretty and amiable face blankly.
