Chapter 9: 09 Rabbit
Fang Zhixing walked into a mountain.
The area was covered with trees and rocks, and occasionally he could hear birds calling, but as he looked around the forest, he didn't see a single soul.
Fang Zhixing occasionally looked up to check the position of the sun.
The terrain in the mountains was complicated, with the canopy blocking the sun, and as he walked, he could easily lose his way and not find the path back.
Every so often, he would make a mark and used a voice transmission to say, "Xigou, dogs have an easy time remembering the paths they've traveled, right?"
"Of course!"
Xigou immediately felt proud and said smugly, "Cats remember thousands, dogs remember tens of thousands! Unlike you, I don't need to consciously remember the paths. Both cats and dogs rely on scents to distinguish paths, not memory."
"That's good!"
Fang Zhixing suddenly felt that Xigou was becoming important, "In case I get lost, it will all depend on you to lead the way out."
Xigou confidently declared, "Leave it to me."
While speaking, he ran ahead, occasionally stopping under a tree or in front of a rock to mark his territory by urinating.
In no time, an hour had passed.
Fang Zhixing climbed up and down along the way, traversing forests and streams, feeling sore in his legs yet having spotted no game, which made him slightly depressed. He complained to Xigou, "Are your dog's nostrils even working? Even catching a mouse would do!"
"Hey, who are you calling a dog catching a mouse!"
Xigou was also a little upset, "You chose this mountain yourself; how is it my fault we can't find any game? I'm just a poor, innocent little dog!"
Fang Zhixing mocked, "What's the use of keeping you? I might as well keep a pig!"
While they were arguing, a whistle suddenly sounded from afar.
Whew~
Whew whew~
It had a rhythmic sense and didn't sound like a bird.
Fang Zhixing and Xigou exchanged looks and immediately shut up, hiding behind a large tree.
It wasn't long before Fang Zhixing saw four figures coming their way, and he recognized them at first glance as Old Man Song, his two sons, and a twelve or thirteen-year-old grandson.
All four stout men of the Song Family had come out hunting.
They were walking in the same direction as Fang Zhixing, colliding unexpectedly.
But Fang Zhixing didn't know if this was really accidental. He suspected the Song family might be tracking him and cautiously hid himself, ready to draw his bow.
"Woof woof!"
Suddenly, a large black dog burst out, charging towards where Fang Zhixing and Xigou were hiding, barking furiously.
"Heizi, what's wrong?"
Old Man Song stood alert, swiftly drawing his hunting knife, and squinted ahead.
The big black dog continued barking, fierce and menacing.
Fang Zhixing helplessly put away his bow and arrow and called out, "Whose dog is this, barking like that?"
Then he pretended to hitch up his trousers, walking out from behind the big tree as if he'd been urinating.
Xigou drooped his ears and tucked his tail, crouching in the bushes, not daring to show his face, and didn't even dare to pass gas, seemingly very afraid of the black dog.
"Oh, Daniu, it's you!"
Old Man Song put away his hunting knife, astonished, "What are you doing here? Hunting?"
Seeing this, Fang Zhixing put on a big, honest smile and rubbed his belly, "I'm hungry, just trying my luck."
Old Man Song understood and responded, "You won't find any luck here; all the game has been hunted down. You'll need to go at least fifteen li away from the village to possibly find any game."
Fang Zhixing gasped, "Fifteen li away, that far?"
Old Man Song nodded and lamented, "These days, everyone's hungry, all out hunting, grabbing anything they see, even the toads have been eaten up. There's nothing left within a ten li radius."
Another man interjected, "Moreover, the areas with more game are over there, monopolized by the village chief's family. If we want to hunt, we have to go even farther."
Old Man Song's eldest son pointed in the direction Mr. Zhao and others had gone, his face full of resentment.
Fang Zhixing understood and sighed as if deflated, "Hunting is too hard."
Old Man Song paused, then suggested, "How about this, you come with us. No matter what game we hit, no matter who gets it, we'll share a portion with you."
Fang Zhixing quickly said, "Forget it, I'd better not bother. I'll just pick some wild vegetables to make do for the day."
Hearing this, Old Man Song didn't insist, just nodded, "Alright, then we'll go ahead."
The group of four, along with the big black dog, left.
Seeing this, Xigou gingerly got up.
Fang Zhixing looked down on him, "Is it really necessary for you to be this cowardly?"
Xigou retorted, "You know nothing."
Fang Zhixing asked curiously, "You're also a dog, can dogs communicate with each other?"
"Communicate my ass!"
Xigou frustratingly said, "Dogs don't talk, dogs judge whether another dog is friend or foe through scent, barking, movements of the ears and tails. That big black dog is a hunting dog, not a pet, very fierce, it could likely snap my neck with one bite."
Fang Zhixing scorned, "After all, you are a Full Level dog, yet you're still so useless."
Xigou angrily said, "Don't talk about me, you're no better, a Full Level man who acts like a mouse seeing a cat!"
Fang Zhixing huffed, "You know nothing, this is called being cautious!"
As soon as the words fell, both man and dog suddenly widened their eyes, spying a gray rabbit that had appeared out of nowhere on the grass nearby, oblivious as it munched on the grass.
"There's a rabbit, a big one!" Xigou excitedly transmitted.
Fang Zhixing held his breath, his facial expressions swiftly turned into absolute calm.
Draw the bow, shoot the arrow!
Whoosh!
Twenty meters away, a gray rabbit suddenly flipped over and was firmly pinned to the ground, its limbs struggling wildly before they quickly stopped moving.
Xigou ran over to take a look.
An arrow had pierced the gray rabbit's left eye, penetrating its skull and lodging it into the ground.
Precise and ruthless!
Highly lethal!
Fang Zhixing licked his lips, very satisfied with his shot, the strength of a Full Level apprentice was not to be underestimated.
He walked forward, first retrieving the arrow before picking up the gray rabbit and weighing it.
Quite fat, about five pounds.
"Heh, looks like I've got breakfast sorted out," Fang Zhixing's mood was instantly very cheerful.
Xigou jumped joyfully, laughing, "Quick, quick, I want to eat rabbit meat."
"Woof woof~"
Suddenly, furious barking came from somewhere.
Fang Zhixing's heart skipped a beat, and he immediately turned around only to see a large black dog suddenly charging out and pouncing straight towards him.
"Damn!" Xigou, scared, suddenly flopped onto the ground, silent as the cold cicadas, not daring to move at all.
He knew he absolutely should not run; running would only further provoke the hunting dog's ferocity.
Ten meters, eight meters, five meters!
The big black dog rapidly closed in, too fast!
Fang Zhixing swiftly, in the nick of time, dropped the gray rabbit, drew his bow, and released an arrow, whooshing through.
"Aw~"
The big black dog suddenly plunged forward, skidding on the ground, sliding all the way to Fang Zhixing's feet.
Fang Zhixing's arrow had precisely hit the big black dog right between its eyes.
The next moment, the Song Family's old man and three others also ran back, looked at the big black dog, then at Fang Zhixing.
For a moment, the atmosphere was incredibly tense.
Fang Zhixing's heartbeat quickened, he slowly lowered his bow and arrow, and forcing a smile said, "Old Mr. Song, you can't blame me for this, your dog suddenly attacked me, I had no choice but to act in a rush."
Old Mr. Song's expression was grim, he said nothing.
But his eldest son was furious, shouting, "Bullshit, have you grown so bold as to dare kill my dog!"
He suddenly rushed forward, pulled out a hunting knife, raised it, and shouted, "I'll kill you."
Fang Zhixing gasped, set his arrow, and fired.
Whoosh!
The Song Family's eldest son stiffened, looked down at his chest where an arrow had passed through, quickly soaking his chest red with blood.
His expression shifted from anger to terror, and he thudded to his knees.
"Da Ming, my son!"
"Dad!"
Old Mr. Song stared with his mouth agape, running over to support his eldest son, while his grandson stood stupefied.
The second son hastily raised his bow, pulling out an arrow, about to place it on the string.
Whoosh!
A point of Cold Light suddenly shot through, precisely piercing his throat, and then he clutched his neck and collapsed straight down.
Blood cheerily flowed through his fingers.
"Er Ming!"
Old Mr. Song screamed in horror, turning back to see his second son falling, letting out a mournful cry.
Then he turned around, clenching the hunting knife tighter.
But before he could stand, he saw Fang Zhixing performing a remarkably smooth and silky motion of drawing and releasing his bow.
The arrow, with a slight curve, whooshed out and buried into his chest.
He fell backwards.
"Puh!"
A mouthful of old blood spurted out.
"Grandpa!" His grandson, completely horrified, stood bewildered.
"Run, hurry!" Old Mr. Song shouted desperately, his expression twisted.
His grandson finally reacted, standing up and turning to run.
But as he just turned, a cold arrow whooshed through the air, hitting his back and piercing through the front of his chest.
Then, he collapsed to the ground.
Fang Zhixing's expression was ice-cold, beads of fine sweat forming on his forehead; after a moment, he finally lowered his arms and walked up to Old Mr. Song.
Old Mr. Song lay face up, his eyes lifeless, having already stopped breathing.
