Chapter 8: 08 Suspicion
"Wow, a hundred percent hit rate within thirty meters!"
Fang Zhixing was overjoyed.
According to the division of archers' levels, apprentices were categorized into Initial Level, Intermediate, High Level, and Full Level.
A Full Level apprentice archer, naturally, was the most formidable among apprentices, with no arrow missing within thirty meters.
"This is what Full Level Cheats are all about, just fulfill every condition and you're there in one step!" Fang Zhixing had an epiphany.
Then he increased the distance, standing about thirty meters away, aimed at the bullseye, and shot his arrows.
Whoosh whoosh whoosh!
Thud thud thud!
Hit! Hit! And hit again!
Not a single arrow missed!
"Holy cow, that's awesome!"
Xigou exclaimed in astonishment, his horizons broadened, "You've barely practiced archery, and in just half a month you got the title of apprentice archer, that's too damn easy."
Fang Zhixing was delighted, glanced sideways at Xigou, and said with a smile, "Don't be jealous just yet, how about you? The 'Bonds Hack' should also get the synchronized upgrade, shouldn't it?"
"Oh, right!"
Xigou immediately looked forward to it, his eyes fixed on the panel.
However, after a moment, nothing happened.
"What's going on, why isn't my cheat working?" Xigou couldn't help getting anxious.
Fang Zhixing analyzed, "Bonds, bonds… could it be that our bond isn't strong enough due to the lack of time?"
Xigou blinked and pondered, "It says on the panel that 'prolonged companionship' is needed, maybe the half month we've been together doesn't count as 'prolonged'."
Fang Zhixing's lips curled up slightly as he reminded, "This bond isn't an ordinary one, surely it requires some sincerity? With your divided loyalties, not fully acknowledging me as your master, can that be considered a bond?"
"…"
Xigou fell silent, deep in thought.
At heart, he was unwilling to admit he was a dog.
He had to be Fang Zhixing's equal.
But now his cheat was malfunctioning…
"Hmm, think about it. I think sincerity is most important in being human, and the same goes for being a dog," Fang Zhixing said in a relaxed manner, bombarding him with a series of PUA tactics.
As soon as he finished speaking, the panel in front of Fang Zhixing flickered with a burst of light, revealing new information.
[Ordinary Archer · Full Level Conditions:
1. Hit the bullseye from at least 50 meters away 10 times (incomplete)
2. 100 catties of any grain (incomplete)
3. 50 catties of meat (incomplete)]
"Oh, my Archery Skill can still improve?" Fang Zhixing's eyes sparked with a different light.
Seeing this, Xigou snapped back to reality and analyzed seriously, "The first condition is relatively easy to meet, considering you have an 80% hit rate within the range of 50 meters. Just a few more tries should do it. As for the second and third conditions, it's all about accumulating resources!"
Fang Zhixing nodded, "The second condition is about food, any choice of grain will do; the third condition is about meat, but it doesn't specify which kind. Pork, beef, fish, and so on might all be acceptable, as long as we gather fifty catties."
Xigou speculated, "If that's the case, meat shouldn't be a problem, we can catch it in the river. The real challenge seems to be getting the grain."
Famine was now the issue, with a lack of food being the main concern.
After some thought, Fang Zhixing proposed a solution and telepathically said, "I can go hunting, sell the game for money, or trade it directly for grain."
Xigou perked up, "Do you know how and where to sell it?"
Fang Zhixing searched his memory, "If you leave Funiu Village and head about eighty li south along the river, there's a market town. The father of Zhao Dahu has been there to sell animal skins and medicinal herbs."
Xigou asked, "Zhao Dahu hasn't been there?"
Fang Zhixing shook his head.
Xigou pondered, "This approach is worth a try. If you can hunt a lot of game, there would be no need to fish in the river anymore."
Fang Zhixing nodded, quickly scheming in his mind.
Before they knew it, night had fallen.
Man and dog returned to the village.
These days, they'd been leaving early and coming home late, avoiding the other villagers as much as possible, very low-key, like lone wolves.
The stars dotted the sky, the night was late.
The village was exceptionally quiet, no light shone from any household.
It couldn't be helped, the place was underdeveloped; at night, oil lamps or candles were needed to provide light.
But oil lamps and candles were luxury items, who could afford them?
The old village chief's family is said to have many treasures, but even they didn't easily use them.
Fang Zhixing arrived at the east end of the village and, under the cover of darkness, entered from there, walking back home along the familiar route.
"Stop!"
Suddenly, Xigou perked up his ears and transmitted his voice.
Fang Zhixing immediately halted, instinctively raised his bow and drew an arrow, resting it on the string, his movements smooth and fluid like water, completing the sequence in one breath.
At the same time, he transmitted his voice and asked, "What is it?"
Xigou scanned the vicinity back and forth and transmitted his voice, "I just heard a very light footstep, not far away."
Fang Zhixing quickly surveyed the surroundings, under the moonlight, the scenery was hazy, as if the earth had donned a veil.
Between the houses, shadows stretched and connected, creating too many blind spots.
He didn't see a single figure.
Xigou lay on the ground listening intently and suddenly looked up, staring at a dark and bulging narrow alley not far away, and transmitted his voice, "There's someone over there, I heard faint breathing sounds, for sure!"
Fang Zhixing understood and slowly drew his bow aiming in that direction, then he coughed loudly and suddenly exclaimed in an angry voice, "Who's that, taking a dump in the road and I stepped right into it."
All around was quiet, no response came.
Xigou listened carefully and, after a while, nodded, "That person has left, the footsteps are getting farther away."
Fang Zhixing breathed a sigh of relief, quickened his pace and dashed back home, closing the door behind him and securing it with a plank of wood.
He turned his head to Xigou and asked, "Did someone follow us?"
Xigou had been all ears—dogs have very sensitive hearing—and shook his head, "Shouldn't have."
"That's good."
It was then that Fang Zhixing finally relaxed his tense body, his face still dark and solemn.
Xigou squatted down, scratched his chin with his hind paw, and pondered, "That person could well be the one who killed Ergou."
Fang Zhixing harbored the same suspicion, "Half a month has passed, Ergou's legs are probably all eaten up by now."
Xigou shuddered, recalling, "I once saw a documentary where psychology experts found that cannibals are very twisted. Once they've tasted human flesh, they become addicted to it and crave more, even if delicacies from mountains and seas are laid out in front of them, they still desire human flesh."
Fang Zhixing nodded, "We'll have to be even more cautious from now on."
Soon it was the next day, with dawn just breaking.
Fang Zhixing and Xigou rose early, taking with them a set of bow and arrow equipment, and set off from the west side of the village, heading into the vast mountains.
"Hey, isn't that Daniu?"
While walking, a group of people suddenly darted out from a diagonal direction.
Fang Zhixing turned his head, his heart suddenly grew cold—the group was large, with more than twenty able-bodied men.
At their head was, remarkably, the three sons of the old village chief: Zhao Dahu, Zhao Erhu, and Zhao Sanhu, along with others all from the Zhao Family.
The villagers' way of banding together was often based on bloodline, people of the same clan were family, everyone else was an outsider.
The old village chief was the largest household in Funiu Village, with brothers, and descendants adding up to sixty or seventy people.
In contrast, other surnames might have as many as a dozen people, while the smallest families were just a family of three, appearing weak and vulnerable.
There were a few households like Daniu, with no one to rely on.
Fang Zhixing immediately put on a smile, bowed his head in a docile and humble manner, and greeted, "Uncle Zhao, Uncle Er, Uncle San, good day."
Zhao Dahu nodded, "Haven't seen you in a while, what have you been up to lately?"
Fang Zhixing pointed to the scar by his forehead and replied, "A few days ago while hunting, I encountered a black bear, fell, and got injured, so I stayed at home to recover for a few days."
Zhao Dahu understood and asked, "Are you going into the mountains to hunt?"
Fang Zhixing responded, "We've run out of food at home, so I'm just trying my luck."
"Do you want to join us?" Zhao Dahu suddenly asked.
Fang Zhixing replied hurriedly, "No need, I'm not that capable, I would just hold you back."
"Alright then, be careful, don't go too far and get lost. We're heading off now." Zhao Dahu patted Fang Zhixing's shoulder and walked ahead with a hearty laugh.
Fang Zhixing stood silently in place, watching Zhao Dahu and the others disappear into the distance, then he headed in a different direction.
After Zhao Dahu had gone some distance, he suddenly thought of something and glanced back, furrowing his brow.
"Big brother, what is it?" Zhao Erhu asked.
Zhao Dahu hesitated, "Did you notice that Daniu's complexion is rosy, he looks quite healthy, and when I touched his shoulder, it felt like he has put on some flesh."
Zhao Erhu's expression changed, realizing, "You're right, that kid does look spirited."
Zhao Sanhu was astonished, "In these times of famine where everyone is starving to the point of looking like neither human nor ghost, how come he is unaffected?"
Zhao Dahu pondered, "After Daniu's father died, he's been on his own, and his household should have been too poor to scrape by. But looking at him, he doesn't seem to have starved at all."
The three brothers discussed back and forth, the more they thought about it, the more they felt there was something off about Daniu.
