The abandoned city was eerily silent, All of it's population already in the bunker and its skyline fractured by the scars of battle and the creeping shadows cast by Mantis's immense warship hovering ominously overhead. Below, Captain Atom stood amidst the rubble, his metallic sheen reflecting the faint glow of distant fires. Flanking him were the Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner, their green auras cutting through the thick smoke as they prepared for the onslaught.

"Alright, boys," Hal said, cracking a grin as he adjusted the energy around his ring, "let's keep this clean. No property damage if we can help it."

"This city's already a ghost town, Jordan," John replied, his tone clipped and professional. "Focus on the mission."

"Focus on the mission," Guy mocked, his grin wide. "Lighten up, John. We've got rings; they've got… what? Claws?"

"I don't think you're appreciating the scale here," Captain Atom interrupted, his voice steady as he gestured to the horizon. "Listen."

A faint buzzing sound grew louder, swelling into an earth-shaking roar. The first wave of Mantis's army came into view, hundreds of thousands of insectoid soldiers swarming like a living tide. Their glistening exoskeletons reflected the city's dim light as their serrated mandibles clicked in unison.

"Holy…" Hal trailed off, his grin fading.

"Still feeling cocky?" John asked, his ring glowing brighter.

Guy flexed his fist, his emerald energy flaring. "More bugs, more splats."

Without waiting for orders, the three Lanterns flew into action. Hal conjured a massive baseball bat of energy, swinging it into the swarm and sending a wave of mantises crashing into buildings. John, ever precise, created intricate constructs: a rotating turret that mowed down the front lines and a wall to protect Captain Atom as he charged his energy.

Guy barreled into the swarm head-on, his constructs crude but effective. "Come on, you ugly freaks! You want some of this?" he yelled, blasting mantises apart with a series of oversized boxing gloves.

Captain Atom, hovering above the battlefield, extended his arms. A blinding flash erupted as he unleashed a blast of quantum energy, vaporizing entire sections of the swarm. But for every wave they defeated, more poured in.

"There's no end to them!" Hal shouted, weaving through the horde.

"That's the point," Captain Atom said grimly. "They're trying to overwhelm us. Stay sharp."

"Sharp as ever, Cap," Guy replied, smashing through another group.

From above, Mantis observed the battle with a chilling smile. His emerald armor glinted as he descended, his staff crackling with cosmic energy. He landed amidst his soldiers, towering over the heroes.

"You've fought well," Mantis said, his voice resonating like a hive's collective hum. "But your efforts are meaningless. Darkseid's will is absolute. Earth's resistance is an irritation, soon to be eradicated."

"Save the speech," Hal retorted, aiming his ring at Mantis. "We've heard it before."

"And you'll die hearing it again," Mantis growled, slamming his staff into the ground.

A shockwave rippled outward, sending the Lanterns sprawling. Captain Atom absorbed the energy, stabilizing himself mid-air.

"This guy's packing some serious power," Hal said, forming a shield as Mantis charged.

The battlefield turned into chaos as Mantis unleashed his full might. He wielded his staff with precision, sending bolts of energy that tore through the Lanterns' constructs. Guy's shield shattered under a concentrated blast, and Hal barely dodged another strike.

John created a massive construct of a tank, firing at Mantis. The villain deflected it with a wave of his staff, the energy ricocheting into a building, which crumbled to the ground.

Captain Atom charged forward, grappling with Mantis. Their clash sent shockwaves rippling through the city. "You're not invincible," Atom said, his metallic frame glowing as he built up energy.

Mantis laughed, shoving him back. "And neither are you, human."

Hal and Guy flanked Mantis, their combined constructs hammering him from both sides. John focused on crowd control, using his ring to contain the swarm of mantises that continued to pour in. For a moment, it seemed they had the upper hand.

"Now!" Hal yelled, as Captain Atom unleashed a massive quantum blast directly at Mantis. The explosion engulfed the villain, scattering debris and mantis bodies in all directions.

The dust settled, and the heroes regrouped. Mantis's shattered staff lay on the ground, and his armor was scorched. His body was motionless.

"We got him," Guy said, breathing heavily.

"Don't celebrate yet," John warned, his ring scanning the area. "Something's not right."

A low, guttural laugh echoed through the battlefield. The heroes turned as the remaining mantises began to swarm toward Mantis's body. The insectoid creatures fused with him, their glowing green forms merging into a massive, kaiju-like monstrosity.

"I AM EVOLUTION," the giant Mantis roared, his voice shaking the earth. "NOW, FEEL THE WRATH OF DARKSEID'S WILL!"

The heroes stood frozen, staring up at the towering beast.

"Anyone got a plan?" Hal asked nervously.

Captain Atom's eyes glowed brighter. "We'll need more than a plan. We'll need everything we've got."

The colossal creature took a step forward, its sheer size flattening the remains of the city beneath its weight. The real battle was just beginning.

....

The battle escalated as the kaiju-like Mantis bore down on the city, each colossal step obliterating entire blocks. Buildings disintegrated like sandcastles under its weight, and the air filled with the unrelenting buzz of the mantis swarm. The heroes' efforts seemed futile as they chipped away at the massive creature, only for more mantises to form and reinforce its towering structure.

"This isn't working!" Hal shouted, narrowly avoiding a swarm that aimed to overwhelm his energy shield. "We're peeling layers off a never-ending onion!"

"Then stop peeling and start smashing, Hal!" Gardner roared, summoning a massive drill construct. It spun to life with an ear-splitting screech, boring into the kaiju's dense body. The plan worked for mere seconds before the swarm adapted, dismantling the construct and swarming Gardner.

"Get off me!" Gardner bellowed, his green constructs flaring like a wildfire, but it wasn't enough. The mantises overwhelmed him, slicing and tearing at his defenses. John and Hal dove in, creating overlapping barriers to fend them off.

When they pulled Gardner free, he was missing his left arm, blood streaming as he grit his teeth in pain.

"Damn bugs!" Gardner growled, using his ring to form a rough, glowing construct arm. "You're not getting the other one!"

John glanced toward the city's distant bunker, its reinforced walls now under assault by the relentless swarm. Thousands of mantises clawed at it, their numbers so vast they looked like a black tide. The structure groaned ominously, and cracks began to spiderweb across its surface.

"We're running out of time," John said grimly. "That bunker's got 842,000 people in it. We can't hold this thing back and protect them."

Atom, who had been fighting silently alongside the Lanterns, turned to them, his metallic face reflecting the destruction around them. "Then we don't hold it back."

Hal frowned. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Atom's gaze didn't waver. "We enact the drill plan again. You three create the drill, but this time you guide me into the core. Once I'm there, you leave."

Gardner blinked in disbelief. "Wait a damn minute. You're talking like you're not coming back."

"I'm not." Atom's voice was calm, resolute. "That thing regenerates faster than we can destroy it. The only way to stop it is from the inside. I'll detonate my core once I reach the center."

"No!" Hal shouted. "There's got to be another way. We'll figure it out."

"We don't have time to figure it out, Jordan!" Atom snapped, his tone cutting through the chaos. "Those are American citizens in that bunker. As a soldier, as a hero, it's my duty to protect them. One life to save hundreds of thousands? It's worth it."

John placed a hand on Atom's shoulder. "You don't have to do this alone."

"Yes, I do," Atom replied, softer now. "It's my choice. But I need you three to get me there."

The Lanterns exchanged glances, their faces heavy with the weight of the decision. Finally, John nodded. "If this is what you're set on, we'll see it through."

Gardner grumbled, clenching his glowing fist. "You'd better make it count, Tin Man."

Hal's jaw tightened, but he forced himself to nod. "Let's get it done."

The Lanterns formed the drill again, its emerald light blazing against the dark swarm. Atom stood at its tip, bracing himself as the drill powered through the kaiju's defenses. Mantises swarmed around them, trying to break the construct apart, but the Lanterns fought fiercely, fending them off as they carved a path deeper and deeper into the kaiju's body.

As they neared the core, John spoke, his voice heavy. "Atom, for what it's worth, I regret not being able to save J'onn during the battle with the alternate universe. I'm not making the same mistake now." He paused. "Your sacrifice won't be forgotten."

Atom gave a faint smile. "Just make sure those people survive. That's all that matters."

The drill reached the core, its green light illuminating the pulsating mass at the kaiju's center. The Lanterns hesitated, unwilling to leave.

"Go," Atom urged. "Now. That's an order."

Hal nodded reluctantly, his voice barely audible. "Goodbye, Captain."

The Lanterns retreated, their construct fading as Atom was left alone. The swarm descended upon him, tearing into his metallic body. One arm was ripped away, then a leg, then an eye, but he fought back with every ounce of his strength, his energy flaring like a dying star.

As pain threatened to consume him, Atom's thoughts were only of the Lanterns. "Are they far enough away? Have I bought them enough time?"

With a final, resolute thought, he unleashed his core. A massive nuclear explosion erupted from the kaiju's center, vaporizing it and the swarm in an instant. The shockwave leveled the remaining ruins of the city, but the bunker, shielded underground, remained intact.

From the air, the Lanterns watched the explosion in silence, the green glow of their constructs dimming in mourning.

Gardner clenched his fist, his voice breaking. "Damn it, Tin Man…"

John placed a hand on his shoulder. "He saved them. That's what matters."

Hal stared at the fading light of the explosion, his voice quiet. "And he saved us."

Far below, the bunker's occupants were safe, unaware of the hero who had given everything to protect them.
