The darkness inside the Apokoliptian warship was oppressive, a suffocating blend of alien architecture and the cold hum of machinery. The ship loomed in Earth's orbit, its colossal size blocking out patches of the stars. A dread-filled silence filled the halls, broken only by the rhythmic march of Parademons patrolling the labyrinthine corridors.
For Batman and the Bat-Family, this was hostile territory. Every step felt like walking through the mouth of the beast.
"Stay sharp," Batman's gravelly voice whispered over the comms. His presence led the way, his cape trailing behind him like a shadow. "Split up. Each team takes out their designated systems. We'll regroup in the central hub."
Nightwing nodded from his position beside him. "Got it, boss," he quipped, though his tone was tempered by the weight of the mission. He darted down one of the dark hallways with the ease of someone who had spent his entire life navigating danger.
Batgirl adjusted her cowl. "Be careful," she whispered to Robin, before moving silently in the opposite direction, her fingers already hovering over her wrist console.
Robin, the youngest of the group, gave a small smirk. "When am I not?" he replied, disappearing into the shadows.
The team moved with the precision of seasoned operatives, each step calculated. Robin found himself in a dimly lit control room, his gaze flickering across the alien panels. This wasn't like Gotham tech—this was a puzzle he had to solve in real time. His fingers danced over the controls, uploading a virus to disrupt the targeting systems.
A guttural growl echoed behind him. Robin spun around to face a towering Parademon. He acted on instinct, throwing a birdarang with pinpoint accuracy. The blade severed the creature's vocal amplifier before it could alert others. Robin followed up with a swift strike to its head, the weight of his blow reverberating up his arm. The creature crumpled at his feet.
Meanwhile, Batgirl scaled a metallic wall in another section, her utility belt providing the tools she needed to disable the navigation systems. As two guards entered, she dropped from above, her cape flaring as she knocked one out with a perfectly timed kick. The second barely had time to react before she stunned it with a taser.
Nightwing's path was chaos in motion. His escrima sticks hummed with electricity as he danced between Parademons, his strikes precise. "Too slow," he taunted as one lunged at him. He ducked, delivering an uppercut that sent it crashing into a console.
Batman was a ghost in the engine room. Silent. Methodical. He placed explosives at strategic points, his cape swaying as he moved. Each charge was a calculated strike against the massive ship's systems.
They regrouped in the central hub. A tension hung in the air as they assessed the room. The oppressive hum of the ship's systems seemed louder here, a reminder of the stakes. Then came the sound of slow, deliberate clapping.
"Well done," a voice echoed, sharp and mocking.
The Bat-Family turned to see a small figure emerge from the shadows. Virman Vundabar was diminutive in stature, but his presence was anything but. His military uniform was pristine, his posture regal, and his smile predatory. His dark, piercing eyes scanned them with the calculating gaze of someone who already believed he had won.
"Ah, Batman," he began, his voice dripping with condescension. "And the rest of the… what do you call them? The Batlings? Truly, I am honored to face Gotham's finest."
Batman's eyes narrowed, his fists clenching. "Surrender. Now."
Virman chuckled, the sound grating. "Surrender? Oh, my dear detective, you don't understand. You've walked into my web." He pressed a button on his wrist, and suddenly, force fields shimmered to life, separating the Bat-Family into isolated pockets.
"I've studied you all," Virman continued, his voice amplified now by the room's speakers. "Every strength. Every weakness. You rely too much on your coordination. Without it, you're nothing."
The battle began in earnest.
Batman faced three armored soldiers at once, their plasma weapons aimed at him. He moved like a predator, disarming one with a flick of his wrist and using its weapon against another. Yet the confined space made it difficult to maneuver, and a blast grazed his shoulder, searing through his armor. He gritted his teeth against the pain but didn't slow.
Nightwing was pinned in his section, ducking behind cover as suppressing fire forced him into a corner. "This is getting old!" he muttered, his escrima sticks crackling to life. He darted out, vaulting over one soldier and striking another with a mid-air spin, but he couldn't break through the force field.
Robin dodged relentlessly, drones chasing him like predators. He threw smoke pellets to obscure their sensors, but they adapted quickly. "Stupid alien tech!" he hissed, scrambling for a prototype EMP he'd stashed in his utility belt. Activating it, he sent a pulse through the room, frying the drones' circuits.
Batgirl's section was the most precarious. She worked furiously at the control panels, trying to hack the force field systems. Sweat dripped down her brow as she muttered under her breath. "Come on, come on…"
"You're outmatched!" Virman's voice taunted over the comms. "Give up now, and perhaps I'll be merciful."
"You talk too much," Batgirl snapped, her fingers flying over the keys. With a triumphant beep, the force fields flickered.
"Field's down near me!" Robin called through the comms.
"Same here," Nightwing added, flipping his way through a patrol.
"Force fields offline," Batgirl confirmed. "Let's finish this."
The Bat-Family converged on Virman. The diminutive commander stood his ground, his grin unwavering. "Impressive. But futile." He activated hidden weapons on his suit, firing projectiles that forced them to scatter.
Batman was the first to engage, testing Virman's defenses with precise strikes. Virman countered, his movements faster than expected, landing a blow that sent Batman staggering. "You see?" Virman sneered. "Without your little gadgets, you're nothing."
Nightwing seized the opportunity, slipping behind Virman and disabling his wrist device with a well-aimed strike. "How's that for a gadget?" he quipped.
Virman roared in frustration, lunging at Batgirl as she worked to disable the ship's weapon systems. Nightwing intercepted, delivering a kick that knocked Virman off balance. Robin followed up with an explosive birdarang, disarming him entirely.
"Systems offline!" Batgirl shouted, her voice cutting through the chaos.
Virman, now cornered, glared at them with seething rage. "You think you've won? This ship may be disabled, but Darkseid's wrath is eternal!"
Batman delivered the final blow, a calculated strike to Virman's chest that left him unconscious.
The team stood together amidst the wreckage. The ship's systems powered down, leaving an eerie silence.
"Good work," Batman said, his voice steady despite the pain in his shoulder.
Nightwing smirked, resting his escrima sticks on his shoulders. "Told you we had this."
Robin grinned, though the adrenaline left his hands trembling. "Yeah, but next time, let's pick something less dramatic."
Batgirl secured Virman with reinforced cuffs. "No monologues this time," she muttered.
As they moved to secure the ship, the faint hum of Earth's atmosphere filled their comms. They had won this battle—not through gadgets, but through their resolve and unity. But they all knew the war with Darkseid was far from over.
...
Raiden stood poised before Darkseid, his body still and unwavering. The vast expanse of the Phantom Zone stretched around them, its eerie, desolate landscape barely registering against the two titanic forces about to clash. The air hummed with an unnatural tension, a charge crackling in the atmosphere, as if the very fabric of the universe itself was anticipating the confrontation.
Darkseid's voice reverberated through the oppressive silence, deep and foreboding. "Do you know what Darkness is?" he asked, his gaze fixed on Raiden, the weight of his question hanging in the air like a thick fog.
Without waiting for a response, Darkseid unleashed his signature Omega Beams. A pair of searing, deadly rays shot from his eyes, cutting through the space between them with unimaginable speed.
Raiden, unfazed, twisted his body in midair, his form shifting like a shadow. The Omega Beams flew past him, missing by inches as he effortlessly dodged them, his movements fluid and precise. He felt no fear, no hesitation—only the sharpened instinct of a warrior who had seen it all, and survived.
With a fierce exhale, Raiden summoned his power. His hand glowed a dark, electric blue, and he unleashed a blast of pure energy straight at Darkseid. The beam roared through the air, crackling with raw force, leaving a trail of destructive energy in its wake. It was a strike that could break through any defense, a force capable of shattering even the mightiest of barriers.
But Darkseid was no ordinary foe. He simply tilted his head, sidestepping the attack with an effortless motion. The beam grazed the air around him, hitting nothing but the empty space behind him. Raiden's eyes narrowed as he landed back on the cracked surface of the Phantom Zone, his boots scraping against the ground.
The energy around them seemed to pulse and writhe, as if reacting to their power. A brief silence followed, broken only by the lingering echo of the failed attack. Darkseid let out a low chuckle, his expression never changing.
"Ah, it seems you've found yourself ensnared in quite the predicament, haven't you, child?" a voice, deep and knowing, resonated in Raiden's mind. The voice was both foreign and familiar. It was Edmond Dantès, speaking to him through the connection that Raiden had forged in his own mind. "Very well, I shall lend you my aid to the best of my ability. Yet, let us be frank—this foe is unlike any I have ever encountered before. Do not mistake my candor for hesitation; I relish the challenge, though I make no promises."
Raiden's eyes narrowed in concentration as he absorbed the message, but his face betrayed little emotion. His focus never wavered.
Darkseid's mocking smile widened as he stepped forward, his massive form casting a shadow over Raiden. "I see....Even the man you are using as a body is afraid of me"
Raiden lifted his chin, his expression hardening. He didn't respond directly to the taunt. but noted to himself that Darkseid somehow heard Edmond Dantes, No one else had ever done that, he looked at him and spoke, his voice steady and defiant, "What is Darkness? I have no idea. All I know is that he's a coward who wants to engulf all life because he was jealous of it."
Darkseid's laughter rang out, low and rumbling. "Jealous? A mere mortal's view of things. No, Raiden, you do not understand. The Darkness I speak of is not a mere emotion, nor a feeling of envy. It is a force—an ancient, eternal force. It is the absence of all that you know and value."
Raiden tensed, his fists clenching at his sides as Darkseid's words rattled him. He couldn't deny the gravity in the villain's tone, nor the weight of the aura that surrounded him.
"Since you are so eager to experience the depths of true Darkness," Darkseid continued, his voice dripping with malice, "allow me to grant you a glimpse."
With a terrifying finality, Darkseid's eyes shifted—no longer glowing with the familiar hue of Omega power, but darkening, shifting into the color of a blackened abyss. A ripple passed through the air, as though the world itself were warping under the weight of his power. Raiden's senses flared, his body instinctively tensing.
Then, the darkness came.
It was not simply the absence of light, but an oppressive, suffocating weight that descended upon them. The air around them thickened, and the very fabric of the Phantom Zone began to tremble. Cracks appeared in the ground beneath them, jagged fissures spreading outward as the energy seemed to break through the world itself.
Raiden could feel it—could feel the suffocating nature of the Darkness. It wasn't just a power—it was a presence, an emptiness so profound that it threatened to swallow everything in its path. It was a weight on his chest, a cold grasp around his heart. He could see the sky above him, now a swirling vortex of blackness, and yet—despite the overwhelming force, he did not falter.
Raiden's voice cut through the tension, his laced with excitement as he smirked "This is Darkness?"
Darkseid's expression twisted with a dark satisfaction as he spoke, his voice echoing around them. "This is Darkness."
"Let's face it then" said Raiden as he rushed in
