Chapter 55: Kissing the princess
Jae's heart jumped in his chest, his cheeks warming as he spun around to face her. "Hey," he said quickly, lowering his voice to a sharp whisper, "stop shouting in the library." His eyes darted nervously to the other students sitting nearby, who were already throwing annoyed glances their way.
The library wasn't packed, but it was still full enough that loud voices drew attention, and Jae didn't want to become the center of it.
Yuna's mood changed at once. Her big, bright grin faded into a playful pout, her blue eyes narrowing with a teasing gleam. She didn't look sorry at all.
Instead, she walked over to him slowly, her steps light and almost bouncy, like she was dancing her way across the floor.
She plopped down in the chair across from him, the soft thump of her bag against the table marking her arrival. Her very presence seemed to change the quiet, calm corner of the library, like a spark of electricity had entered the air.
Jae sighed, leaning back in his seat, his fingers brushing the edge of the wooden table.
He'd come to the library for some peace, maybe to read a little and think, not to get dragged into another conversation, especially not with her. "I came here to read, you know," he muttered, trying to sound serious, though his tone didn't carry much weight. He already knew it wouldn't work.
Yuna ignored his weak protest and leaned forward over the table, her pout twisting into a mischievous little smile. "I need your help with a mana technique," she said, her voice a little quieter now but still full of energy. "Since you're in a higher class."
Jae frowned slightly. "Technically," he said, drawing the word out a bit, "I haven't taken your class, so I might not even know the exact technique you're talking about." He sounded cautious, trying to put up some kind of wall, even if it was a weak one.
Deep down, he already knew it was useless. Yuna was like a gust of wind that blew past any defense with a smile.
But she wasn't even listening to his excuses. Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she pressed on. "Just explain how to coat my feet and arms in mana," she insisted, waving her hands like she was trying to paint the words into the air. "I've been trying for days and it keeps slipping off halfway through."
Jae sighed again, this time louder and longer, slumping into his chair like he'd just been told to run another lap. She wasn't going to let this go.
Still, he couldn't help but feel a little amused by her stubbornness. He glanced around the library again, noting the distance between them and the others, and then sat up straighter.
"Alright, watch carefully," he said, raising his right hand into the air. He closed his eyes for a brief second and focused, channeling mana into his palm.
The energy came quickly, familiar now, like warm water flowing through his veins. A soft blue glow appeared at the center of his palm, pulsing gently.
He let the mana spread outward, across his skin, slow and smooth, like paint being brushed over glass. "Don't try to force the flow," he explained. "Mana spreads naturally. Think of it like water. If you push it too hard, it spills, but if you let it move on its own, it coats the surface evenly."
He continued "The hardest part isn't spreading it. It's keeping it balanced. Once it covers your hand, or your feet or arms, you have to keep the mana steady. Like holding a full cup without spilling a single drop."
Yuna didn't say anything. At first, Jae thought she was just focusing hard on the explanation, but as he glanced up to check, he noticed something different.
Her eyes weren't locked on his hand or the glowing mana at all. They were locked on him. Her wide blue eyes were watching the way his jaw moved as he spoke, the way his lips formed each word, the way the glow of mana lit up his fingers
She leaned forward, slowly, her chair creaking beneath her. Her hair spilled over one shoulder, catching the light. Her lips were slightly parted, her breathing a little quicker now.
Jae kept talking, still thinking they were just going over a technique, but he could feel something shift in the air. A warm, buzzing pressure settled between them. He looked up and froze.
Yuna's face was so close to his that he could see every freckle on her cheeks. Her eyes met his, and for a second, everything else disappeared.
The rustling pages, the distant whispers, even the quiet tick of the clock on the wall, all of it vanished.
It was just her and him, staring at each other in silence.
Jae's heart pounded in his chest, his face warming even more. He felt caught in her gaze, like he couldn't move. Neither of them said anything.
Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the moment broke. Yuna blinked hard, like she'd just realized how close they were, and shot back in her chair.
She stood up fast, flustered, her hands tugging at her gown like they needed something to do. "I, I want to leave now," she said, her voice high and fast. She turned away quickly, facing the bookshelves.
Jae blinked, still catching up. His heart thudded against his ribs. Without thinking too much, he called out softly, "Wait."
Yuna stopped mid-step and turned slowly. Her face was red, her eyes darting nervously, but she didn't move away.
Jae leaned forward slightly, his elbows on the table, his voice softer now but still strong. "Did you… really want to kiss me just then?" he asked, a small smile tugging at his lips.
Her eyes widened, and her hand flew to her mouth in shock. "Keep your voice down!" she hissed, her head turning to check if anyone nearby had heard. Her panic only made Jae grin wider.
"I wanted to kiss you too," he said, this time quieter, but the words came out clear and certain.
Yuna stood frozen for a moment, clearly stunned, her blush spreading all the way to her ears.
Then, with a quick breath, she stepped forward again and sat down beside him, closer than before.
Her gaze didn't waver this time. She leaned in, her eyes fluttering closed. Jae met her halfway, their lips touching in a soft, warm kiss that felt like it had been waiting forever.
His hand moved to her waist, the other brushing gently against her boobs without thinking, just caught up in the moment.
Yuna let out a soft sound of surprise, a quiet little moan, before her eyes flew open and she pulled back suddenly. Her whole face turned red as she jumped up again.
She gave him a look, half annoyed, half amused, and rolled her eyes. "You're impossible," she muttered, her voice shaky but playful. Without another word, she turned and walked away, her steps fast but slightly clumsy, her hair swaying with each step.
Jae sat there for a long moment, still smiling like an idiot, the heat of the kiss lingering on his lips.
