Chapter 337: Return to Selsa to Collect War Spoils
Ye Nai drove the car, following the directions and drove from early morning until a little after three in the afternoon, when she finally saw a new military fortress.
It didn't matter whether the large troop from the previous military fortress had come here; since Ye Nai had spotted it, it was now her spoil of war.
As usual, she scattered a large amount of spores. To accelerate their growth, Ye Nai took out an Otherworld Heart Core and buried it in the soil.
The abundant energy caused the spores to begin growing wildly.
Ye Nai left, planning to return later.
She returned to the East Ridge Secret Realm, went through a transfer in the Secret Realm, and reentered the enemy camp in the village where she had slept the night before, heading towards the Secret Realm entrance.
There were some changes here; many people had come and gone, with not a few doors kicked in, but ultimately, no one had stayed behind.
This time, Ye Nai pulled out five Otherworld Heart Cores and threw them on the ground to accelerate the spore growth, to clear out the enemies in this Secret Realm, and to collect resources and livestock.
Since she saw livestock dung on the ground and considering the vastness of the Secret Realm, she reasoned that the enemy soldiers definitely needed means of transport like military horses.
And since no military horses were seen in the village outside, it was reasonable to assume they were still within the Secret Realm, to be led away if found, or left if not.
Eventually, Ye Nai took out the marked Transmission Platform she had prepared earlier, activated it, and returned to the Otherworld, in this Selsa United Kingdom.
As soon as she appeared, her vision was pitch black, her eyes had not yet adjusted to see anything, but stuff was already pouring into the space in a rush.
All were spores she had collected beforehand.
Among these resources, the most crucial were the properties, coins, and Heart Cores, all neatly arranged in Fungal Mycelium compartments while other items were piled together, to be sorted out when she had more time later.
As she was rushing between different Transmission Platforms, time was limited; she only spent the shortest amount of time knocking down the garrison fort enemy soldiers and didn't take the materials, waiting instead to collect them on her return.
Now, in this military fortress, only the Transmission Platform was left uncollected, ready Fungal Mycelium awaiting Ye Nai's commands.
After her vision returned, and looking at the pitch-black night outside, Ye Nai took out her flashlight to light her path, careful not to step on any bones on the ground, before slowly stepping off the Transmission Platform.
With such effective crowd control, Ye Nai walked to the outer wall. The entire military fortress had been cleared out, filled with nothing but the bones of enemy soldiers, all killed and decomposed by the spores after removing the Smoke Formation Team.
They were all from Dahua Country; Ye Nai knew their common behaviors well— restless, fond of wandering and snooping around. The Smoke Formation Team would not have stayed put waiting for her return and would have likely scattered everywhere. Rather than let them see dead bodies everywhere, it was better that they only see enemies who had fainted, lessening the psychological shock.
Look how considerate she was.
Of course, all the bones on the ground had been collected.
Since she had already been considerate for others, taking another step ahead, she cleaned up the military fortress so later incoming troops wouldn't be frightened, saved them the trouble of gathering enemy bones themselves.
As for the idea of buying a bone grinder to crush the enemy's bones into fertilizer, maybe she should just forget it. Too disgusting, not worth it.
With her flashlight in hand, Ye Nai casually walked out of the courtyard towards another area to collect the Transmission Platforms and to survey the surroundings.
Operating military fortresses connected to Blue Star like this one, densely manned, should ordinarily be bustling, often with people passing through this node to enter the Secret Realm and then going to Blue Star.
But now, the entire fortress seemed deserted, with no one coming over.
To put it simply, it was all rather straightforward: the Transmission Platforms, entirely enveloped by the Fungal Mycelium and waiting to be retrieved, did not affect normal usage; however, no matter how many people came, they barely made it out of the courtyard before collapsing dead, all becoming food for the fungus and spores.
Thus, these courtyards were also filled with skeletons, amongst them a mix of noble and commoner attire.
After collecting the Transmission Platforms, the Space Fungus devoured everything rapidly. Following the path she had taken from Duke Akeley's Main City to here, Ye Nai activated one of the Transmission Witch Patterns and retraced her steps to the fortress at the previous level node.
Upon landing, the situation was the same; the spores Ye Nai had scattered during her arrival, besides eliminating all the enemies, had also gathered materials, which she swiftly took into her space as she appeared.
It hadn't been five minutes since she landed, and all the Transmission Platforms were collected; Ye Nai continued hurrying to the previous level node.
The next level up was a city, just like Duke Akeley's Main City, with both the city and the fortress together.
The fortress was cleared by the spores under stiff control; they didn't touch people in the city, but inside the gate connecting the fortress to the city lay piles of skeletons, their positions suggesting they were people who had come from outside.
Death came simply – the air was filled with vast amounts of invisible spores; a single breath inhaled them into the body, and within a second or two, the individual was gone.
Separated by the outer wall connecting to the city, Ye Nai could hear constant murmuring outside and even see the shadows of people and vehicles, but no one dared enter anymore.
Ye Nai did not exterminate the civilians in the city who were aware of the situation; once the war ended, her action of killing all the soldiers could still be justified—clearing enemy forces on the battlefield was a priority, but killing civilians was another matter that required prudence.
At the enemy fortress across the True Dragon Gully, she had used mud to cover them and guns to shoot; it was all to show that combat was hard, not as those inexperienced would think, that she could just open a space and easily kill groups of enemies.
For all the military fortresses and village camps on Blue Star that she had previously annihilated, taking away all bodies, bones, and items, it was for this reason too; no bodies meant no massacre, just empty buildings that proved nothing.
After the war, a major reshuffling was inevitable, and anyone who remembered history's lessons knew to be cautious.
And so, returning the way she came, level by level, she finally returned to Duke Akeley's Main City.
The night air carried the stench of burning; Ye Nai did not care to know what had happened in the city during her absence, assuming it was none too peaceful.
The spores had likewise not cleared out the entire city; they relied on absorbing the faint energy from the air to strengthen themselves; as long as the civilians didn't cross the red lines Ye Nai had set, they were safe.
The two flags she had planted on the city walls were still intact, surrounded by a heap of skeletons, all clad in civilian clothing.
When she had planted the flags back then, she deliberately left spores to protect them; anyone who came to touch the banners was killed outright and used as food.
She collected both flags and the skeletons, returned to the fortress to collect the Transmission Platforms, and waited for the Space Fungus to finish its digestion before finally activating the one that led directly to the Royal Capital.
Watching the Transmission Port slowly unfold a meter in front of her, just as it stabilized, suddenly, a squad of soldiers wielding long spears and broadswords charged out.
Ye Nai hurriedly stepped back, and at the same time, she summoned a massive amount of spores from the Fungal Mycelium that covered the entire city; in just a breath's time, the squad of twenty soldiers all collapsed dead and were decomposed right before her eyes into ash-white skeletons without even emitting a stench.
