Chapter 8: Chapter 5: The Lightning Step and Meeting Shisui
After days of relentless practice, Ryusuke stood alone in the training ground, surrounded by the quiet morning mist. Today was the day. He could feel it in his bones-he was going to complete his technique.
Taking a deep breath, he centered his mind and focused his chakra, recalling every misstep and adjustment he had made. Slowly, lightning crackled around him, humming with power as he gathered the energy around his body. The familiar tingling sensation crawled over his skin, like hundreds of small sparks flickering in unison.
"Godspeed," he whispered, feeling the surge of electricity take form around him. This time, it felt stable, steady-almost like a second skin. "Let's go."
With a sharp burst of energy, he dashed forward, his vision sharpening as he moved. The world slowed, his surroundings blurring, but this time he had full control. Every step landed exactly where he intended, his speed responding seamlessly to each subtle shift in his body. He zipped between targets he'd set up, leaving faint streaks of lightning in his wake.
Stopping at the far end of the training ground, Ryusuke let out a victorious cheer. "I did it! Godspeed is finally complete!"
"Impressive," came a voice from behind him, smooth and calm.
Ryusuke turned, startled, and saw a figure stepping into the light. The young man's appearance matched someone he knew all too well: spiky black hair, a Leaf headband, and piercing eyes that held a glint of mischief. Shisui Uchiha-the "Shunshin no Shisui," or Shisui of the Body Flicker.
He tried not to react, forcing himself to remain calm and composed. "Oh, hi! I didn't hear you come in," he said, playing it off as if he were meeting Shisui for the first time.
"Nice to meet you, Ryusuke," Shisui said with a friendly grin, his voice warm and casual. "I heard there's a young Uchiha genius here, so I thought I'd come check it out. And I must say, that lightning technique is quite impressive!"
Ryusuke felt his heart race with a mixture of excitement and sadness. He couldn't let on that he already knew Shisui or the tragic fate that awaited him. "Thank you! It's called Godspeed. I've been working on it for a while," he replied, smiling brightly, though a part of him felt the weight of the clan's fate bearing down on him.
"Godspeed, huh?" Shisui nodded, crossing his arms thoughtfully. "It suits you. Speed and control-it's like you're dancing with lightning."
Ryusuke laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Well, I still have a lot to learn. Maybe you could teach me a thing or two? I heard you're the fastest shinobi in the village."
Shisui chuckled. "Flattery, are we? Well, maybe I could give you a few pointers. But first, how about we see if you can keep up?"
Without another word, Shisui vanished in a flicker of movement. Ryusuke's Sharingan spun into action, catching the faint trail of chakra that Shisui left behind. He darted forward, following the trail, his lightning-enhanced speed making the chase exhilarating.
As he closed in, Shisui appeared directly beside him, moving effortlessly at an almost blinding pace. "Not bad," Shisui said, looking at him mid-stride. "But can you keep this up?"
Ryusuke grinned, pushing his chakra even further as he matched Shisui's pace. They raced across the training grounds, weaving between trees and leaping across streams. For a brief moment, Ryusuke felt a powerful sense of kinship with Shisui, even though he couldn't express it. Shisui's warmth and effortless grace reminded him why the older Uchiha was so deeply respected.
Finally, they came to a halt, both breathing hard but smiling. "You're better than I thought, Ryu," Shisui said, clearly impressed. "If you keep training like this, you'll be stronger than any of us in no time."
Ryusuke's smile faded just slightly as Shisui's words sank in. He couldn't help but think of what was going to happen to the Uchiha clan, to the people he was coming to admire so much. But he pushed those thoughts aside, not wanting Shisui to see his sadness.
"Thanks, Shisui. Coming from you, that means a lot," he said sincerely, hoping that his gratitude covered the shadow of sadness in his voice.
Shisui's gaze softened, as though sensing something deeper. "Hey, if there's anything you ever need-whether it's training advice or just someone to talk to-don't hesitate to reach out, alright?"
Ryusuke nodded, feeling a surge of emotion he struggled to keep hidden. "Yeah... thank you, Shisui. I'll remember that."
They spent the rest of the afternoon together, Shisui teaching him new movements and techniques to refine his speed and agility. Every now and then, Shisui would disappear in a blink, leaving Ryusuke to try and catch up. The training was rigorous but fulfilling, pushing Ryusuke to heights he hadn't thought possible.
When the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the village, Shisui placed a hand on Ryusuke's shoulder. "You've got a good heart, Ryusuke. Don't ever lose sight of that."
Ryusuke looked up at him, swallowing the emotions that threatened to rise. "I won't, Shisui. And... I hope you don't either."
They shared a quiet moment, and though Ryusuke couldn't tell Shisui everything he knew, he felt a strange comfort. Shisui was someone who would live in his heart and memory, even if he couldn't alter the course of the future.
As he watched Shisui disappear into the dusk, Ryusuke made a silent vow to himself. He would protect the people he cared about to the best of his abilities and carry on the legacy of those who couldn't stay. In his mind, he pictured the lightning and the flickering movement Shisui had shown him. He would remember it, honor it, and use it as a guide on the path he would carve for himself.
Turning back toward the village, he whispered to himself, "Thank you, Shisui. I'll make you proud."
