DxD: The Devil

Chapter 9: Chapter 8 'The Big Step (1)'

The Big Step (1)

---

"Lord Vael, you look stunning."

The head maid of the Beleth family spoke with admiration, bowing slightly to the young heir.

Vael was dressed in a regal white and blue ensemble—a high-collared coat lined with silver embroidery, draped over a fitted vest of deep sapphire blue, fastened with intricate obsidian buttons. A silver-trimmed cape hung from his shoulders, exuding an air of effortless authority. His white hair complemented the outfit perfectly, making his crimson eyes stand out even more. His black horn, a mark of his lineage, was gradually shifting to red—a sign of his growing power.

He looked devilish.

"Is it over?" Vael asked, his tone laced with exhaustion. He had been forced to stand for an hour, picking out clothes, and it had drained him.

Today was his sixth birthday, and that meant two things: he would be formally introduced to the higher nobility and the lesser devil clans, and he would finally receive his Evil Piece set.

'The entire banquet will be uploaded to Deviltube.'

Vael sighed at the thought. The Beleth Clan was one of the more mysterious noble families, rarely making public appearances, which only fueled speculation. Today was the day the world would finally see the heir of Beleth.

He had already come across countless videos about himself on Deviltube—titles like "Everything We Know About the Heir of Beleth" (which, amusingly, only confirmed his name) and "Vael Beleth's Future Wife REVEALED?!" littered the platform.

To Vael, it was entertaining.

Being a celebrity in the underworld had its perks. A smirk tugged at his lips—he enjoyed it.

Just then, the door opened. Brisha Beleth stepped in, her presence commanding yet warm. A soft smile graced her lips.

"Look at my baby boy, all grown up now," she said fondly.

"I'm only six, mother," Vael reminded her. Though, by devil standards, age was measured differently.

Brisha chuckled; her eyes filled with pride. "You'll be receiving your Evil Pieces today. I'm so happy."

She pulled him into a hug, wrapping her arms around him.

Vael felt a warmth in his chest.

It's nice to have people who actually love you.

Brisha pulled away slightly, her golden eyes twinkling. "Lord Beelzebub is waiting for you in his lab, you know."

Vael nodded, having already memorized the procedure.

The process of receiving Evil Pieces was straightforward—Beelzebub would send a magic circle inscribed with teleportation magic, leading to a top-secret location. There, Vael would place his demonic power into an ancient monument, activating a hidden spell. Moments later, the Evil Pieces would be created.

One had to admit, Ajuka Beelzebub was not just a genius; he was a monster.

Time passed, and Vael found himself teleporting to the secret location.

Vael's POV

"Greetings, Lord Beelzebub." I bowed to the Satan, holding a great deal of respect for him—from creating the Evil Pieces to even Deviltube. He could not just be considered a genius; he was in a league of his own.

"Nice to meet you, Vael Beleth. This is the first time we have met, isn't it?" Beelzebub replied, his voice smooth. He was a handsome man with green slicked-back hair and light blue eyes.

"Yes, Lord Beelzebub."

I nodded at his words, and a smirk suddenly appeared on his face.

"You are quite strong for your age." He commented, sending a chill down my spine.

I knew he could tell, but it still frightened me. One of the major lessons I learned from El Cid was to hide my aura, my strength.

"Not as much as you and Lord Lucifer. I have heard stories."

Ajuka nodded. "Well, we were a bit above average."

A bit above average, he says.

But I held my tongue.

"Yeah," I simply agreed with him.

Though Brisha had referred to it as a lab, it felt more like an underground corridor stretching infinitely. After a minute of walking, I finally saw the monument.

The monument loomed before us, a magnificent structure that combined mystical runes and intricate machinery, pulsing with a faint, otherworldly glow. It seemed both scientific and magical, a fusion of technology and magic that defied explanation.

"Wow." It was the only word that escaped my lips as I gazed at the structure.

"Place your hand and pour your demonic power," Beelzebub instructed.

I nodded, not bothering to ask about the quantity. As I poured my demonic power into the monument, it glowed a dim green before the light stopped.

An enormous amount of energy radiated from within the structure. I couldn't identify the type of energy, but the sheer quantity was overwhelming. My back was drenched in sweat, and my legs began to tremble.

Fuck.

Just as my body threatened to collapse, a warm aura washed over me. I looked at Ajuka, who wore a smirk on his face.

"You could feel that?" he asked although I knew he already knew, but I nodded, nonetheless.

"Yes."

"Hoh~! You sure are promising."

What did he mean by that? Was the energy something I wasn't supposed to feel?

Before I could voice my thoughts, I glanced in front of me and saw a beautiful box materialize from the structure. It floated gracefully, and I could feel a bond forming between me and the box.

It was like the connection I felt with my familiars, but instead of one string, it felt like there were an infinite number of threads connecting us.

Instinctively, I reached out and touched the box. It opened, revealing fifteen chess pieces, each beautifully crafted in a mix of black and red, while some glowed with an eerie purple light.

Mutation Pieces.

And those pieces were—
