Chapter 887: The ultimate weapon
When Tina Celes picked up the phone, she was not expecting the one on the other side of the call to be Uriel and she panicked for a few seconds before answering. Old feelings resurfaced as she found herself experiencing butterflies on her stomach, but also the wrath of a scorned woman. She managed to appear calm only due to the way she was raised, though the moment the call ended her cellphone was shattered to pieces under her heavenly rank grip.
"Deploy the ultimate weapon." Tina said to Fermi whose eagerness to put his creation to the test made him squeal like no old man ever should.
The logistics that came before dispatching the ultimate weapon were the most challenging part about the process, since activating it required nothing but providing it with energy that could be provided with just batteries.
Thankfully, Tina Celes had the foresight to make those preparations from the moment the stirrup in the Jacobs office building began. A crane had carried the weapon from the laboratory to a truck, that took it to the airport where it was picked up by four helicopters. Due to the size of the crate, loading it into a zeppelin could have been possible in the larger models, but Fermi insisted on using helicopters since they could deploy the weapon faster than a zeppelin. That is what he said, though in reality he just thought it would make his weapon stand out more.
As someone with almost no strategic awareness and little care for anything but the science behind his inventions, Fermi just wanted to see his creation work in the most eye catching way possible which is why he also insisted on providing both a military and a civilian escort.
Cameras were pointed at the device from a distance with drones and hunters on the ground, its recording not only being stored for further analysis but also being displayed live for everyone to see.
The lead up to the moment where the so called ultimate weapon against cryptids had been so long, many people theorized it was just a ruse from the government to rise up the morale. Others thought it was real, but believed it would not work as such a quick fix to the cryptids scouring the land was something they couldn't even fathom. There were also many who didn't believe in the existence of cryptids in the first place, which also meant they did not care for the weapon, but they still followed up the transmission thinking that maybe that would be the day they finally saw a cryptid appear on TV which, other than seeing one in person, would be the only proof they would consider valid of cryptids actually existing.
When The deployment team finally arrived at the destination they noticed how easy it was to spot the target. Luna's werewolf form was big, but the reason why it was so easy to spot her was due to the people surrounding her as they made their best effort to contain her.
Uriel was still trying to wrap her with his flux wire, though even with Sam's help who lured her to the traps Uriel set thanks to his ability to fly they still failed and only caused the werewolf to become angrier.
Mark kept his distance, but he was helping just like Uriel told him. "If you want to help, then don't get in the way." were Uriel's words.
"Target acquired, ready for deployment." Was heard in the livestream of the events.
"Roger that, you have been cleared, proceed." Another voice replied and the crate dismantled revealing a strange device though it only appeared for a brief moment in the screen as the angle soon shifted into the camera placed in the device itself.
People all over the city saw as the device was released from its hold and fell to the ground. The machine separated into four different parts that buried themselves upon touching land leaving only their upper half in sight.
At that moment, every single citizen in the city of New Texas had their eyes nailed on the screen as they witnessed a closeup view of Luna's werewolf form. The high definition screens showed each bristle of hair, every speck of dirt, every blood stain in such detail it looked more real than reality itself making even the more skeptic of the viewers to finally believe not just that cryptids were real, but also that they were far scarier than they could have ever imagined.
Luna's berserk skill added to her already dreadsome figure and the calamity caused by her painted the picture of the most terrible of cryptids even people with hunting experience could imagine. Especially since her vicious behavior leaked no evidence of sentience or intelligence.
The werewolf attempted to continue its rampage across the city, but an invisible barrier rendered the werewolf unable to do so. It was akin to a force field, an invisible wall that would not break no matter the pressure applied, no matter how many times he tried.
"Would you look at that, I didn't think it would work." Uriel, who was among the skeptics, admitted in awe.
Somewhere near the university, two people watched the scene unfolding on a large screen that usually showed advertisements but now followed the events transpiring downtown just like all the other screens on the city.
"Look, is that not Junior's friend?" Asked Dana with curiosity.
"Do not, and I'll repeat it just to make it clear, do not ever call him that. If he finds out he is a Junior he would have a fit." Jon emphasized it enough for Dana to make a mental note of not ever calling Uriel by his birth name, though it would have been better if she actually wrote it because she forgot it before five seconds passed.
"Should we help her out?" Dana asked.
"She'll be fine, that young lady is a force to be reckoned with. You may look at her werewolf form and think she's scary, but it's her human form that gives holy rank hunters a chill in the spine." Jon chuckled awkwardly, thinking back on how many times he had been actually afraid of the tiny huntress.
"You're probably right," Dana pondered. "besides, picking up on divine essence inside a megacity is turning out to be way more of a pain in the ass than I thought."
"About that, why are we still here?"
"Because I'm sure Fate is present here somewhere, I just can't pinpoint her location... yet." Dana said, then carried on with the investigation while having an ice cream cone. Knowing that her husband had a thing with another woman was upsetting, not being able to hold hands with him until they got that sorted was worse, but not to the point where an ice cream could not fix it.
A rather luxurious vehicle Jon recognized as a Nika roared past them and in less than five minutes arrived at the scene where the lycanthrope, as Luna preferred to be addressed as, was already getting tired. After so many attempts at breaking the forcefield, it came as no surprise that the werewolf was spent, it was the fact that the field remained what shocked those present.
The self driving vehicle drifted as it arrived and Tina Celes walked off of it mid motion like only a heavenly rank hunter could. She stood in front of the forcefield cage and spoke only when she confirmed all cameras were pointed her way.
"Today we contained a threat of the likes that could end a city with nothing but a scale model of the ultimate weapon and while it can be considered a victory for humanity, it was nothing but a field test and a taste of what the larger version can achieve. Humans can cross it without issues, but cryptids cannot, which means for the first time ever we have deviced a weapon specific against cryptids. I hope this reaches the ears of every governor, investor, soldier, hunter and citizen. This is the chance we have been waiting for, the time has come to turn the tides of war on the cryptids and retake our planet, but to achieve this we need to join hands..." Tina continued on a very sincere sounding speech she had rehearsed more times than she could count and she was still speaking when Luna started shifting back into her human form.
Knowing she would be naked, Uriel attempted to walk inside the forcefield to cover her with a blanket, but was left stunned in place when he couldn't walk past it. He pretended as though the reason for him looking the other way was that Luna had now turned into a human, a naked human, and he held the blanket up to cover Luna from the cameras until Nika showed up from his shadow.
Unfortunately, she too was unable to cross the threshold leaving her astounded as it implied that she was, at least in part, cryptid. A fact that she was completely unaware of until that moment.
