Chapter 886: Stalemate

As a field medic, Luna's duty was to first help the wounded, though Uriel did not need any treatment with all the life essence he stole from Sam. He just needed a few minutes and all his wounds would regenerate on their own and Luna noticed at first glance which is why she moved to the next priority which was helping him recover by gaining time.

A glowing orb of light closing in on the battlefield did more than that as everyone thought it was a nuke and they ran for cover. Even the soldiers who should have known better hid, though mostly because they assumed the rangers who hid knew something they didn't.

This gave Luna the chance to land safely, if breaking every bone in her legs could be described as that, though she soon healed and was able to run towards Uriel. However, just as she reached him she noticed something strange.

"It smells funny." Luna managed to say before the pungent smell of the undead filled her nose and she started losing control. Heat surged through her spine and expanded reaching every corner of her body, then the feeling of a thousand needles being jabbed followed and finally, her every muscle bulging into her lycanthrope form

"Luna, no!" Uriel screamed, but his words fell on deaf ears. She did not transform because she wanted to and there was nothing Uriel or Luna herself could have done to prevent it either.

Had something like that happen before, Uriel would have likely been able to contain her, but Luna went through a lot in the past months and that changed everything. She had to endure the terrible suffering caused by radiation poisoning for weeks and she was also left disabled for a long time, but worst of all came when she transformed into a lycanthrope for the first time after evolving and Uriel was fully aware that her new version of lycanthropy could not be stopped by any means.

The rampant werewolf ran across the battlefield seeking for the stench of vampires that surrounded her. The smell was so intense it numbed her mind and the only way to recover consciousness was to sate her lust for blood.

Gunpowder, blood, iron, concrete dust and all the smells of a city were mixed in together along with the filthy smell that felt both revolting and enticing to Luna on equal measure, but she eventually found the source.

The lumbering beast that was Luna before her evolution was now even larger, much resembling the appearance of the Gevaudan she consumed but larger and more vicious looking. During her long hours of studying her own condition and what she gathered from the Morbach werewolf, she noticed the similarities between their conditions. Morbach was stronger than any werewolf she knew and also more vicious and Johannes also had a hard time controlling his beastly urges, which now also applied to Luna. And the one thing they had in common was they both consumed their own kin.

But those thoughts lingered deep in Luna's subconscious mind as her protruding fangs crushed a man dressed as a cowboy and cut him in half only to disappear into ashes in the wind. It was a vampire and her next victim too was a vampire. She went through the battlefield shrugging off bullets and traits alike, not even the grenades thrown Luna's way could do anything to stop her and even the vampires she found who were supposedly far stronger than a regular hunter could do nothing against the immense pressure of her jaws.

"Fuck me! What is that thing!?" Charlie cried as she watched her rangers get decimated by the werewolf. The shadows tingled behind her and Uriel seemingly appeared from the dark. It seemed as though he used shadowblink, but that skill was exclusive to Nika and he used the next best thing which was Shadowcloak which thanks to the eclipse's ability that covered the city had now become much more effective.

No one saw him move, no one but Sam that is, though when he attempted to follow him he was shot at by the soldiers who sniped him from their covers.

"That's a werewolf, though she prefers the term Lycanthrope." Uriel explained.

"I couldn't care any less about what she identify as, she may as well call herself a helicopter! How do we stop her!?"

"We don't, your only chance is to run away." Uriel replied with a shrug.

"But that thing is attacking even the routed rangers, why is it only targeting us!?" Charlie was desperate as the memories of a failed operation came back to her mind. The rangers were already too few and their numbers were thinning by the minute.

"This could have been prevented if you helped me, like you were supposed to. About why she's targeting you, I think you know the answer. Or is it a coincidence that all the cowboys that die turn into ashes?" Uriel fell in silent wait for Charlie to confirm or deny the claim, though instead of a reply he received an uncanny smile with fangs too sharp to belong to a human.

"Truce!" Sam shouted after rushing in with Celerity to escape from the barrage of bullets flying every way now that hunters, soldiers and even vampires were in complete disarray. Despite moving at an impossible speed with world level parkour movements, Sam still appeared with hundreds of bullet wounds that healed immediately after he approached.

"We were just discussing the terms of her surrender, I don't mind if you do it too." Uriel smiled, maybe even more uncannily than Charlie.

"Like hell I will surrender, I still have one ace up my sleeve." Sam growled.

"Is it a zeppelin? Because you know the minute the Pegasus arrives you're all screwed, right?" Uriel said with a smug.

"I give up." Mark showed up in a fashion much similar to Uriel's, though rather than using the shadows around him the eclipse actually created the shadows Mark used for cover.

Noticing how the involved parties were gathering, Sharp too approached, though rather than holding up her arms she came bearing arms. Colonel Mayhem soon followed and she spoke with an authoritative tone of voice.

"I command you all to cease hostilities. I don't care who was killed or robbed, this city can't take this punishment. I also formally accuse the holy rank hunter Samael Song of activating holy rank level skills inside a city, which is punishable by death."

"That's not much of a motivation to cease hostilities, is it?" Sam's eyes glimmered in the pale dark than enveloped the city and Mayhem flinched.

"Those eyes..." She muttered to herself as she remembered the last time she saw them, which was the time when she was charmed.

"Someone do something! my men are dying!" Cried Charlie some more. The vampire cowboy ranger that would flirt with anything that moved and would take all matters lightly, now begged for the life of her men.

"She can't be stopped, only killed. But if anyone dares..." Uriel's words were cut short by the unlikeliest of those present.

"She can be stopped, in fact, it's not even difficult. I just need to call my wife, but my cellphone is not working." Mark informed.

"Yeah, that's thanks to little Miss cryptid over here. I don't know what dumb thing she did, but according to the investigation performed by the agency, former hunter Charlie became a fully fledged cryptid. Not a hybrid or a possessed one like some of those present." Sharp said, hinting that she knew even more than what she said.

"Well, you can shrink your FOD, can't you?" Uriel asked Charlie to which she replied along with a shake of her head.

"That's impossible."

"Fuck, cryptids do it all the time. Can't you really?" Mayhem insisted, but the answer remained the same.

"If she says she can't do it and admits to being as incompetent as a cryptid as she was as a hunter then she just can't." Sharp said with a grin that obviously bothered Charlie, but not nearly enough as much as it bothered to be aware that she was correct.

"Your wife, huh..." Uriel pondered for a few seconds and deciding whether or not it was worth it to use his smartphone in front of everyone, arriving soon at the conclusion that if they couldn't contain Luna they would attempt to kill her.

It wasn't just the fact that she was killing the rangers who also happened to be vampires, the true problem was the destruction path she caused and that she also attacked in self defense which meant that some soldiers too had died.

It was in human nature to be afraid of the unknown, especially if it was a hulking creature with large muscles and fangs that could shred a self propelled artillery tank to pieces like the one she just destroyed because they opened fire at her.

Luna went from reinforcements to the biggest threat on the field, even to Uriel who had nothing that could possibly rival with Luna when she accidentally activated her Berserk skill. And if giving Tina a call and exposing the fact that his smartphone could still work under the influence of a field of disruption, then it was worth it.

"Hey, Tina, come to the Jacobs building with whatever it is you have to contain a cryptid. What does it look like? It looks like a wolf the size of a horse that can and will kill anything or everything that attacks her, but if you kill her..." Uriel went on a short discussion with Tina whom despite being aware of the commotion downtown, did not intend to use her 'ultimate weapon against cryptids' unless it scaled up to a city level threat.

It took just five minutes for Tina to get things ready and arriving on the scene, but in the span of those five minutes Luna managed to kill a dozen more rangers and a couple soldiers that stood in her way. Even though everyone present tried to stop her, even when Uriel used his flux wire to contain her, nothing could stop the huntress.
