Chapter 852: Lost and found

Although Uriel could not see Jon approaching, Jon was able to hear him say Dana's true name which shocked him enough to snap out of his skill. As if being married to an actual goddess wasn't enough to wrap his head around, he now had to deal with the fact that she wasn't just a goddess but the god of death.

"You lied about your name!" Were the only words that escaped Jon's gobsmacked mouth.

"Don't be silly, babe. I've had several names over the millennia, that said, I did introduce myself as Donn the morrigan and you just assumed my name was Dana Morrigan." Dana said letting out a big chuckle at the end. Her sweet demeanor shifted entirely as she turned to Uriel with a purple glare so cold it managed to stun Uriel in place. "your friends put up a good fight and so did you, but it's time. Tell us all we want to know and I'll kill you."

"Hang on, that wasn't part of the deal. I told you I could handle this kid. I'll get him to talk, there's no need to kill him." Jon placed himself in between Dana and Uriel in a rare display of altruism.

"This is no ordinary kid, Jon. He looks just like a human, but I assure you he is not. It's a wolf in a sheep's skin, a monstrosity disguised as its prey so he can have an easy time killing humans." Dana said solemnly.

"I know he's a creep, but he's just a kid." Jon insisted.

"I can see his kill count, would you like to know how many people he's killed? If we get rid of him now, who knows how many lives we would be sparing." Dana shook her head.

While that conversation was taking place Uriel had taken the chance to scurry away in the shadows with the help of his shadow cloak, but it proved to be in vain as Dana was able to immediately catch up to him.

"Speak." She said, a commanding voice that somehow made Uriel feel both anxious and nostalgic at the same time.

"Look... I would love to tell you, especially if it means keeping my head where it belongs. But there isn't much I can tell you about my family, in fact, I'm not even sure I'm from the Sage family at all."

"Don't be mistaken, kid. You tried the easy way, the only thing you can choose now is whether you speak before I sent your soul into the book or after, but you're speaking one way or the other. You can't bargain for your life." She sentenced.

Getting sent inside the book was not appealing in the slightest to Uriel. He had seen what happened to those who got trapped inside that book and it was the top on the list of things Uriel wanted to avoid and though he usually would activate Dash to find a better solution, he noticed how Dana too could match his speed and it wouldn't even delay his fate.

"No wonder you married him, you jerks are two peas in a pod," Uriel said scratching the back of his neck. "you said I can't bargain for my life, but what about the others?"

"If you tell me the truth, I'll let them live." She nodded.

"And if I tell you everything? Would that get me a little extra?"

"What else do you want? You're going to die anyway." Dana let out, annoyed by the sinic creature that posed as a human.

"I want you to release a soul from the book. May I?" Uriel opened the book and received a nod, only instead of annoyed Dana seemed curious. Uriel then proceeded to summon a specific soul from the book before explaining. "This is Scoundrel, you can say he's a friend of mine. He died due to one of his friends incompetence and also because I was too weak to save him back then. If there is a way to bring him back from the dead, or at least take release him from the torture inside the book..."

"Torture? What torture? This book is a safe haven for souls, not hell." Dana snatched the book from Uriel's hands and skimmed through its pages.

Whenever Uriel read the book of the dead its contents were a mystery that would only be revealed if he had a purpose in its mind, though it would be mostly cringy phrases. However, when Dana read the book it was akin to a programmer reading code and she was able to see what had gone wrong.

"Yeah, here it is. It seems a horror level cryptid was sealed in this book for too long... I guess it's my fault for misplacing it."

"You've always been messy." Jon nodded knowingly.

"I don't think there's a way to get souls out of this place, not for me anyway."

"But you said you wrote this book, how come you can't even do this small thing?" Uriel asked.

"You do have a cellphone, right? Can you tell me how it works? Of course you can't." Dana scoffed.

"I could." Medusa butted in then faded into the background when Jon, Dana and Uriel glared at her.

"Can I have my book back?" Uriel probed.

"Thanks for finding it, but it's my book," Dana let out a sigh. "the one who made this book is the only one who can fix it. I guess I can ask him for help. I'll take care of your friend and release the other souls for you, after you're dead of course."

"Oh, there's no need to bother with the rest of them. They deserve it," Uriel shrugged. "So, the Sage family was wiped out with the exception of a single girl. She was too young to know much about what happened or why it happened, but she heard her mother went to Texas to look for her aunt. Eventually, the Sage girl sold everything she had to her name and moved to America looking for answers, and that is where she met me."

About myself, there's not much I can tell you. I'm an orphan, abandoned by my parents at a young age in the care of an uncle. I grew up in the slums and returned home to question my uncle about my origins, but he turned out to be a changeling." Uriel then continued by going into detail about his poverty, the abandonment issues and all the range of trauma he had gone through in an obvious attempt to gain sympathy.

"I see, so you don't know if there was an uncle to begin with. Which also means that you may not even be a Sage." Dana nodded, uncaring of his suffering. On the other hand, Jon had a hard time keeping a straight face listening to Uriel's story.

Reuniting with his wife after such a long time made him happy, but Uriel's story made him think that his son could have suffered a much similar fate to his and he might have even crossed him on the streets without knowing it was his son.

"About my mother I don't know much, but I do have some things that supposedly belonged to my parents, a few of your books actually. It is why I became interested in archaeology. If I knew what kind of a jerk you were, though, I think I would have gone into STEM." Uriel chuckled.

"I take offense into that," Jon replied, then continued after lingering for a couple seconds. "if you inherited those books, it could mean that your father was one of my colleagues. But I really don't know anyone with the Sage last name."

"You did know him, I know because you carry his picture in your wallet. I was afraid to ask you about him because if he was still alive and..." Uriel said lowering his gaze in embarrassment, but Jon's reaction was to immediately reach for his pocket. He discarded the wallet filled with cash that was nothing but paper to him now and only kept the picture.

"Is this the man? Is this your father!?" Jon asked almost shouting. Dana's eyes opened wide and she held her breath.

"Yeah." Uriel scratched the back of his head, then a shrill pain traversed his body as he was tackled by two of the most powerful beings he had encountered in his life.

Both Jon and Dana had rushed in to hug him in such a fashion that had Uriel been an evolved or even an ascended, they would have squished him to death.

"You're my son, you're my bloody son!" Cried Jon.

Dana too cried. The words, if they could even be called that, were completely unintelligible and didn't resemble any language modern or ancient mostly because she was not speaking at all. Her godly brain was filled with so many emotions her mouth couldn't keep the pace and she just cried a snotty weep.

Then, Uriel looked in the eyes at the god of death and said the following words:

"Shut the fuck up."
