Chapter 114: Is it Done?
In the luxurious office of Astrea, the city lord sat quietly scribbling across a parchment of paper while rubbing his thick blond hair. The room was filled with gold ornaments, statues, paintings and books, with gold leaf covering the majority of surfaces.
His books remained untouched, countless spines with a layer of dust.
He was anxious, waiting for his aide to return and give information about the request he put in.
'To think she would die, a saintess candidate... I shouldn't have been so aggressive.'
When he learned about his aide contacting a dangerous group that worked from the slums, it became more serious than he thought it would.
He had no choice now but to think that a threat would escalate to death.
'I must calm myself—nobody will know.'
He gritted his teeth, leaning back with a sense of irritation; the daily tasks and requests only made him more anxious.
Ding-Dong!
The grandfather clock chimed, startling him and causing him to drop the feather quill he held. The ink splashed across his desk, and it covered part of his papers.
"Darn it."
Ever since he put pressure on the hero Kaito, everything went downhill. The man himself left the city and headed south with a different group after arguing with the others. Because the man the women travelled with also had black hair, it caused the people he hired to misunderstand and a battle ensued.
"Those greedy clergymen!"
He scrunched up a piece of parchment which asked for monetary reimbursement for the death of their saintess.
The former elegant and handsome figure now deteriorated, his clothes dirty and eyes dark with rings from lack of sleep.
"The amount they want will cost an entire years revenue!"
Suddenly, the door knocked.
"Forgive my impertinence, City Lord!"
The knight who caused this issue hurriedly entered, his shoulders trembling.
He understood what had happened the last time he had appeared and tried to help the lord, so he remained silent. The air became heavier each second that passed, making the knight feel terrified.
"Did you finally lose your tongue?"
"N-No, Sire!"
"Then use it before I have you disappear for causing this mess."
"The report from the front lines is silent. The dragon and dark elves have vanished. It seems that an elf by the name of Sylvie has killed the alpha and calmed the forest."
The blond noble shifted his gaze to the knight, unable to believe this statement. Not long ago, there were over ten dark elves spotted daily by several scouts. But how could he accept the fact they've vanished?
'This isn't right, something is wrong, here.'
"Who gave you that report? Do you trust them?"
Of course, the death of the Alpha, which caused the troubles, was best, but to learn that the dark elves had vanished made the city lord nervous. Recently, there were issues of strange monsters attacking the villagers.
"Sir Patrick."
"Yes, My Lord?"
"Did you have a good drink, like I asked you too?"
The knight seemed confused for a moment before he realised what the lord meant and nodded.
"I did, a great drink in the slums at the—"
"Enough you bumbling fool, don't mention the name lest we be hung drawn and quartered!"
With this information, the city lord sent the knight out of the room as he began to pace around his office, wondering what to do next. He didn't want to let this issue grow out of control.
***
"Jack, don't you think Diamond seems a little strange?"
In the empty tavern called the Last Call, Queen sat at the bar, drinking together with Ace and Jack after their job in the north became complicated.
Meeting their leader's daughter and then having him fake her death to trick the church and their client halved the pay they received.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, why would that obsessive witch not return here with the boss? We all know she is crazy about him... but it's been a week and only a single message?" Queen flicked her red hair back and leaned against the bar, rubbing her forehead.
"I don't know."
The black-haired Jack just remained stoic as usual, but while cleaning his blade, he seemed to feel something as his hand jerked.
"Ace... Ace! Don't drink so much; you'll be drunk."
"Shuddap. It's the boss' money, not that we are getting paid," the grey-eyed old man complained in annoyance.
"Heart, don't try to make him act normal. He's angry that young girl could overpower him."
The queen who spoke was wearing a light green dress that reached her knees and had vibrant blue eyes. She shook her head as the old man drank more alcohol.
"I just think she would have normally returned sooner..." The woman called Heart said, her white hair swaying a little as she turned to look at Jack for help.
Jack didn't reply and instead got up from his seat and went to his room.
The loud echo of his boots on the cheap wooden flooring echoed before a jingle sounded from the entrance, and the knight named Patrick entered the store.
"Ah, Sir Patrick. Here for your usual?"
The man who spoke was an elf who wore a large black hat and an apron with the words 'The Last Call' printed on it.
Today, Enzo wasn't behind the bar, and all the customers were the assassins who worked here, thankfully using rings that made it difficult for humans to remember what they looked like and so they listened to the knight's words.
"Yeah, but I'm also here to ask you all for a job."
"A job?" Queen muttered and looked over.
Even Ace became sullen from the knight's arrogance.
Because of his poor information, it led to their last job becoming a disaster, this time, they wanted to reject it without consideration.
But the one who chose that would be their boss.
Patrick sat at the bar, drinking a cheap mug of ale while tapping the wooden bar with a slightly annoyed expression. He looked around and gave Heart a wink because she was a beautiful woman.
After a few drinks, Ace and Queen pushed Heart towards the bar, the woman who wore a leopard mask becoming embarrassed as she slipped beside him.
"My boss, he's so unfair."
"Oh? Why is that?" She spoke in a low, seductive tone.
"He sent me back here, after our last job caused them so many issues. Even though he knew of the dangers... damn..."
Thud!
The knight hit the table before downing his fifth drink.
The bartender nodded before heading in the back to get Enzo.
Although not a member of the active group, he wasn't innocent and was one of the many supporters and intelligence workers who helped The Last Call.
Patrick spilled information about the city lord, telling them who their client was and what he wanted, without realising this would come to bite him later. He explained to Heart about how his boss originally asked to make them suffer, but now it became hard he denied that order.
"..."
"What do you think, Ace?"
Ace looked back at Queen, then towards Heart, who visibly struggled with the knight's arm around her waist.
"I think this could be dangerous. Will the city lord take action against this bar, or do we flee? It seems that the best method would be to kill the city lord."
No longer drunk, Ace always pulled himself together at the opportune moments.
"That might be a good idea."
The handsome voice of Enzo echoed from behind.
Beside him, Jack nodded, one of the rare times he agreed with Ace.
"Since they almost made me attack my daughter, what if he went to another group? Wouldn't she be dead right now for real?" He whispered, gazing at the drunk knight.
"What do you all think?"
Jack and Ace nodded, instantly convinced, while Heart and Queen took a moment before they also gave their acceptance. "We should strike soon, before things get out of control... the church will also be looking for the real criminal if we take too long."
Enzo then narrowed his eyes. "I think we have another enemy more dangerous than those two... that boy will surely kill me."
"What? You're mad, why would he kill Erina's father?" Heart added in dismay.
Jack and Ace exchanged glances before nodding.
They didn't know why their boss would say something like this, but his hunches and sense of danger rarely missed the mark.
"Do we strike first?"
"No Jack, we escape... kill the city lord and then escape." Enzo seemed reluctant to kill him.
"Why?!" Queen gasped, with the rest nodding.
"Because my daughter is in love with that kid."
He was a horrible father and treated her like a potential payout. The saintess would be a useful tool in the future. But that young man saw through his goals and never dropped his hostility towards Enzo.
"I would rather not make her even more disappointed in me."
"I guess we have no choice."
"Haa... fuck it. Whatever the leader wants!"
"Don't regret it." Ace gave one last warning before they all started leaving the bar.
"We act in ten nights!"
Little did they know...
The so-called enemy was already on his way to Astrea City.
