Chapter 78: Chapter 78: The Super Tsunami Evaporates! Escape? Where Can You Escape?
A tsunami, thousands of meters tall, was fast approaching Marineford. Its sheer size and force gave off an overwhelming sense of dread. If it landed, Marineford would be wiped off the map.
Although Vegeta had promised Sengoku that he would take care of the tsunami, most of the navy was still in a state of panic—especially the Devil Fruit users. The sea was already their natural enemy, and now they were facing a titanic wall of water. If not for their strong willpower, they would have collapsed in fear. Even so, this moment would leave a permanent psychological scar.
Compared to them, the non-fruit users fared slightly better—but only slightly. Though they were not vulnerable to seawater in the same way, the force of the tsunami was enough to sweep everyone away. Whether you were a Devil Fruit user or not, death seemed imminent.
The pirates were even worse off.
Big Mom's crew was consumed by despair. The tsunami was created by Big Mom herself—yet it was about to claim their lives. Who would've thought they'd die not by the navy's hands, nor from the terrifying powerhouse the navy had hired, but from their own captain?
Kaido's subordinates were no better. Though the tsunami hadn't been summoned by Kaido, their despair ran just as deep—because Kaido had abandoned them. He transformed into a dragon and fled right before their eyes. The sting of betrayal by the one they were loyal to was a heavy blow.
Panic broke out. Pirates scrambled to flee, trampling over each other in their desperation. Some died not from the tsunami, but crushed underfoot by their own comrades.
"Mr. Vegeta, it's all up to you now!" Sengoku muttered as he looked at Vegeta's back, placing every last hope in him.
Although the navy was slightly calmer than the pirates, it was only because they believed Vegeta could stop the tsunami. If they knew he couldn't, panic would engulf them just as quickly.
In the face of life and death, navy or pirate, it didn't matter. They were all just ordinary people afraid to die.
"Only the thug from the Thugs group can stop this," someone murmured.
"But how? How will he do it?" Marco asked, watching the towering tsunami inch closer.
Despite their anxiety, Marco and his crew were grateful that Whitebeard had not allied with Kaido or the navy. Had they joined the war, they'd be the ones staring death in the face.
Marco could escape by transforming into a phoenix, just like Kaido. But the rest of them? Not a chance. And Marco wouldn't abandon them either. He'd rather die with his comrades.
"He might just blast the tsunami back with raw power," someone suggested.
"Even so, he can only redirect it, not erase it. The force will affect us too."
"Maybe we should move our ship back?"
Whitebeard listened and nodded. Though they were some distance from Marineford, a tsunami that large would still reach them. Under his command, the Whitebeard Pirates backed away from the impact zone.
The tsunami began crashing toward Marineford.
Everyone's expression turned grim—except for Vegeta, who wore a faint smirk.
Then, Vegeta raised one hand and aimed it at the tsunami. A glowing energy sphere formed in his palm and shot forward.
Sengoku and the others stared in confusion.
"Is that all he's going to do? Just one blast?"
They doubted a single attack, no matter how strong, could stop a tsunami of this scale. Even if it dispersed the wave slightly, it wouldn't be enough. Marineford would still be destroyed.
The energy ball collided with the tsunami.
An enormous explosion erupted. Smoke blanketed the sky, obscuring everything. Everyone held their breath.
The tsunami didn't crash down.
Moments later, the smoke began to clear—and the impossible revealed itself.
The tsunami was gone.
Completely.
Only shattered remnants of destroyed pirate ships floated in the sea, the only proof that a tsunami ever existed.
"T-The tsunami... it disappeared?"
"How?! How did it just vanish?!"
Confusion and disbelief filled the minds of every surviving marine and pirate.
Sengoku and Garp were speechless.
"Garp, what did you see?" Sengoku asked.
"Nothing. Just thick smoke," Garp replied. "But if the tsunami is gone and we didn't feel any backlash... there's only one explanation."
"What?"
"Mr. Vegeta's attack... it didn't just break the tsunami. It vaporized it."
Garp's voice trembled.
The idea was unthinkable.
To instantly vaporize a tsunami thousands of meters tall? The energy required was unfathomable.
"One blow... and it was gone..."
Sengoku couldn't deny it. There had been no splash, no retreating wave. The water simply vanished.
"This power... it's no wonder Mr. Vegeta claimed he's stronger than the thug who appeared before."
If Vegeta heard that, he would've told Sengoku not to underestimate Jack. Even Krillin—before fusing with Saiyan blood—could've done something similar. After all, even old Krillin was capable of blowing up stars. What was a little tsunami to them?
Back on the sea, the Whitebeard Pirates had a clear view of what happened.
They saw the tsunami erupt in a massive explosion, then disappear. Only faint wisps of vapor lingered in the air.
"He evaporated the entire thing," Marco said in disbelief.
"Yes," Whitebeard agreed. "Even the water vapor was barely visible. That level of power... it's terrifying."
If that attack had hit a person, there would be nothing left. Not even ash.
"To be honest, I imagined several ways he might deal with the tsunami," someone said. "But I never thought it would be so... direct."
"Only someone with overwhelming power could solve it this way."
"I didn't think beings like this could exist in our world."
"Who said they were from this world?" Whitebeard interjected.
"What do you mean, Dad?"
"These thugs—they're from other worlds."
"O-Other worlds?!"
"Think about it. If such powerful beings existed in our world, forming a group as strong as the Thugs, would we really know nothing about them?"
The more they thought about it, the more it made sense.
No wonder Mr. Jack and Vegeta were so absurdly powerful.
They came from a different world—a much stronger world.
"So Kaido's escape was meaningless," someone muttered.
"Exactly. He thought the tsunami would kill everyone, but it didn't. He used it as a distraction to run."
"But he won't get far. If Mr. Jack can fly, then so can Vegeta. He'll catch up."
Back at Marineford, the navy and pirates stared in awe. Their lives had been spared.
"Mr. Vegeta, thank you for saving us!" Sengoku said, stepping forward.
"I was just fulfilling my employer's request," Vegeta replied. "There's still one pirate left—the one who fled. I'm going to bring him back."
"No need," Sengoku said quickly. "Kaido's long gone. We don't even know where he is. You've already done more than enough."
It was true. Vegeta had saved them all and taken down Big Mom.
Sengoku felt guilty asking for more.
"Escape? Where can he escape to?" Vegeta said coldly. "I said I would fulfill the mission. You wanted all the pirates eliminated. The job isn't done yet."
With that, Vegeta turned his eyes skyward—locked on Kaido's location.
The hunt was on.
