Chapter 74: Chapter 74: Karp and Sengoku’s Consciousness, Go to War! Persimmons Need to Be Soft!
Red-haired Shanks hadn't made a move yet, and that was understandable—after all, he hadn't caused the Navy any real trouble. Among the Four Emperors, Shanks was the most detached, not particularly interested in clashing with the Navy.
But Whitebeard's lack of action was far more puzzling to Sengoku. Given their intense clash with the Navy before, Sengoku couldn't understand why Whitebeard was staying out of it now. Still, whatever the reason, Whitebeard's inaction gave the Navy some much-needed breathing room. Had he joined the fray, the Navy wouldn't have stood a chance.
"Sengoku," Garp said, standing firmly beside him as Kaido and Big Mom charged forward. "Even if it costs me my life, I will take down either Kaido or Charlotte Linlin."
Garp spoke with grim resolve. With his strength, defeating one of the two might have been possible—but killing one of them? That would take everything he had. Still, he wasn't afraid. If he could take out one of the Four Emperors at the cost of his life, it would be a worthy sacrifice for the sake of the Navy.
Last time, during Ace's execution, he had held back because Luffy was there. But this time, he would go all out.
Hearing Garp's declaration, Sengoku turned to look at him. He could see the steely determination in Garp's eyes. His old comrade had truly cast aside thoughts of survival. Garp had never said something like this before—not during the fight against Whitebeard's crew, nor even during the battle against the Golden Lion.
That told Sengoku just how dire this crisis was.
"If you die, I won't let myself live on alone," Sengoku replied solemnly.
"You old fool," Garp grunted. "Don't say such disgusting things. Sounds like you're trying to die with me or something."
"I'm just telling the truth," Sengoku shot back. "But trust you to twist the meaning."
Despite the imminent danger, the two veterans chuckled. They knew full well this could be their last laugh together.
As a naval hero and the former Fleet Admiral, they would not allow Marineford to fall to Kaido and Big Mom. Both had already accepted that they might die today, but they would take as many enemies as possible with them.
The clash resumed as the two massive pirate crews surged forward. The battle erupted into chaos once more.
Kizaru and Aokiji moved to intercept the emperors. Their faces were unusually serious. When they fought Whitebeard's forces previously, they had been holding back. But now? There would be no room for restraint—they would have to give it everything they had.
"Linlin, let me handle these two. You focus on the rest," Kaido declared as he stood before Big Mom.
Big Mom didn't argue. She bypassed Kaido and rushed toward the Navy ranks.
Aokiji tried to stop her but was quickly intercepted.
"Your opponents are me!" Kaido growled at Aokiji and Kizaru.
Despite being outnumbered, Kaido showed no fear—only excitement. It had been too long since he faced strong opponents. He was bored of peace. That's why he had seized on the Navy's weakness and led his Beast Pirates to launch this assault on Marineford. He wanted a war that would shake the world.
Although Whitebeard had once attacked Marineford, Kaido wanted to top that. He had hoped to bring all Four Emperors together for this strike. In the end, only he and Big Mom showed up, but it was still enough to wage a war of legends.
Kizaru and Aokiji braced themselves. Kaido, the so-called "strongest creature in the world," radiated overwhelming pressure. They weren't afraid—but they understood just how difficult this battle would be. Taking Kaido down would require time—something the Navy no longer had.
"Kizaru," Aokiji said, "I'll hold Kaido. You go intercept Big Mom."
He had reached the same conclusion as Sengoku. If both admirals were tied up by Kaido, the Navy would be crippled. But if one could break free and assist elsewhere, the balance might shift.
Kizaru nodded. His usual laziness was gone. Though he preferred to coast, he knew how important this moment was. If they lost Marineford, there'd be no paychecks left to collect.
As Kizaru tried to break away, Kaido lashed out with a lightning-infused strike.
"Ice Age!" Aokiji countered.
Kaido's attack shattered the freezing air and launched an energy wave that also flew toward Kizaru. Caught off guard, Kizaru couldn't dodge and had to stop to block the blow.
Kaido had effectively pinned down both admirals.
Meanwhile, Big Mom was rampaging through the Navy ranks. Even the vice admirals fell easily before her power. Her combination of strength and Soul-Soul Fruit abilities made her a terrifying force.
Just as she was cutting down another group of marines, Garp appeared in front of her.
Her expression changed immediately. Among the Navy, the one she feared most wasn't Sengoku or the admirals—it was Garp.
Charlotte Linlin still remembered the Battle of God Valley. Back then, Garp and Roger had joined forces to defeat the mighty Rocks Pirates. Though many members of that battle hadn't gone all out, Garp's fearlessness had been burned into her memory.
She knew very well: no pirate could take Garp's iron fist head-on—not even her.
Although she was now one of the Four Emperors, that fear still lingered.
If she had her way, she would've preferred to fight Sengoku and let Kaido deal with Garp. Even if Kaido couldn't win, at least he could stall Garp. But fate hadn't been kind today—now, she had to face the man she least wanted to fight.
Garp, in contrast, remained calm. There were only a few pirates who ever truly troubled him—Roger, Whitebeard, the Golden Lion—and Charlotte Linlin was not among them.
Still, she was a Four Emperor, and Garp knew he couldn't take her lightly. He had to finish this quickly and move on to support his comrades.
Without hesitation, Garp coated his fist in Haki and lunged forward.
Big Mom didn't dare take the hit directly. She grabbed a few unfortunate pirates nearby and hurled them in Garp's path. She wasn't trying to block the attack—just delay it and find a way to switch opponents.
Her target? Sengoku.
Originally, she had hoped to swap with Kaido and let him handle Garp. But facing two admirals would be worse. Sengoku, she reasoned, was the easier opponent.
Persimmons should be picked soft, after all.
As she charged at Sengoku, he was instantly furious. Garp had been right there—but instead, she had chosen him.
Did she think he was easier to bully?
If she could hear his thoughts, she would've answered honestly: "Yes."
Left with no choice, Sengoku engaged her.
As Big Mom closed in, Sengoku immediately activated his Golden Buddha form. In this state, he towered over her and radiated immense power.
He wasn't going to go easy.
He struck with a massive shockwave.
Big Mom responded with flames and lightning around her fists, crashing into his palm with a punch of her own. The clash generated a massive shockwave, sending both combatants skidding back and injuring many around them.
"Warring States! Let me handle Charlotte Linlin! You go help the others!" Garp shouted, rushing toward the battlefield.
Sengoku nodded immediately. He understood Garp's plan—he would defeat Big Mom quickly, while Sengoku stalled the rest. It was the most efficient way to help the Navy recover its position.
It was like a Tian Ji horse racing strategy—match the strongest with the strongest, and stall the rest.
Big Mom, however, had other ideas.
"You guys! Stop Garp!" she yelled to her children and Kaido's three Disasters.
She wanted nothing more than to avoid fighting Garp herself.
Her children obeyed without question, even though they knew how powerful Garp was.
The three Disasters, however, weren't under her command.
"You three—stop Garp!" Kaido's voice boomed from the battlefield. Even while fighting two admirals at once, Kaido still had the strength to issue orders.
That, alone, spoke volumes about his power.
