Chapter 81: Chapter 81: Assisting the Northern Spirit Ascension
A gentle green light flashed, covering the five people — it was Gu Yue's wind element control. Though not strong, it lightened their weight and made everyone more agile.
Tang Wulin raised his right hand, two strands of Blue Silver Grass snaking out as a yellow soul ring rose at his feet. Like twin serpents, the vines stretched forward, sweeping aside the bushes on either side and opening a path.
Zhang Yangzi lifted his hand, sending his little black eagle soul spirit soaring into the sky. While the eagle's combat boost was minor, its biggest value lay in shared vision. Though it couldn't stray more than ten meters from Zhang Yangzi, having an extra set of eyes still greatly expanded their range.
Gu You's hands were now covered in dragon scales, a faint dragon might radiating outward. Ten-year soul beasts wouldn't dare approach — only stronger ones would.
There was no room for overconfidence; the moment they entered the Spirit Ascension Platform, they all released their martial souls.
In the Spirit Pagoda observation room, a staff member smiled at Wu Zhangkong.
"These little ones are pretty good, huh, Teacher Wu? You've trained them well."
Wu Zhangkong gave a slight nod.
"Let's see how they perform."
He was always the type to keep his emotions hidden, but when it came to these disciples, he was quietly satisfied.
As he watched them, his mind naturally drifted to that two-thousand-year-old motto passed down at Shrek Academy: 'Shrek only accepts monsters, not ordinary people.'
Though not every generation lived up to it perfectly, that motto was carved deep into the heart of every Shrek student, a badge of pride.
'I wonder how far these little ones can go.'
To become a true "monster," it wasn't just about hard work — you also needed exceptional talent. Looking at these six, they all had it.
If you ranked them by raw potential, Gu You would top the list, but his identity was too special to count here. Next best, without a doubt, was Gu Yue. Even the records at the Spirit Pagoda and Shrek Academy had never mentioned a martial soul capable of controlling multiple elements. It was astonishing. Though her soul skills only amplified her soul power or element control, what more did you need when you could command five elements at once, even combine them?
The second-best talent was, naturally, Xie Xie. Twin martial souls — no matter the era, this was an extraordinarily rare gift. Though his was a companion-type rather than pure twin souls, even companion types had unique advantages; who knew, maybe it would evolve or mutate in the future.
'… I hope he can go even farther.'
If Wu Zhangkong were to pick just one of the six to join his own organization, it might be Tang Wulin. Gu Yue was still a mystery, hiding many secrets — he'd need to watch her longer. Gu You, on the other hand, was easy to read: by nature, he was someone who would never willingly bow his head to anyone.
…
Tang Wulin carefully parted the bushes ahead with his Blue Silver Grass vines, leading the team forward slowly. Because this was their final exam, survival was their top priority — hunting soul beasts was secondary.
Finding a relatively safe place was the most important.
"No soul beast activity behind or on either side for now," Zhang Yangzi reported.
Walking up front, Tang Wulin nodded. A silver light flashed in his left hand as he gripped his Thousand-Refined Heavy Silver Hammer, leaving his right hand free in case he needed to activate his Golden Dragon Claw.
Just then, a low growl sounded from up ahead, and a huge figure appeared before the five of them.
It was a massive iron-armed ape, radiating a faintly rancid smell. Its gray-black fur and blood-red eyes made it clear: this was a hundred-year Iron-Arm Ape, a humanoid-type soul beast known for its speed and strength. Its iron-like arms were as hard as refined steel, and worst of all, it had a built-in aura-type group skill called Fear. If you were caught in its aura and your spiritual power was weak, you could lose combat awareness entirely.
So when facing an Iron-Arm Ape, the best strategy was simple: strike first!
Crash!
Tang Wulin only heard a sharp sound before a massive force slammed into him, knocking him flying. 'What kind of power is this?!' he thought in shock. Not even with his Golden Dragon Claw active could he manage this level of strength.
There was a human-like roar, and waves of spirit ascension energy floated into the air. As the dust cleared, they saw Gu You casually shaking off his dragon claws. He shot the group an 'OK' gesture.
"Why bother with all these formations? With me here, isn't upgrading soul rings easy?"
The others were speechless. Gu You's strength really was terrifying. He was right — if he was willing, getting thousand-year soul rings was no challenge.
Xie Xie gave Gu You a big thumbs-up.
The group began dividing the gathered energy. Gu You didn't take any; he simply made one request in exchange for helping them hunt soul beasts, though they were all puzzled about what that request would be.
Still, Tang Wulin and the others were overjoyed. If their first soul ring could reach the thousand-year purple level, it meant that when they eventually reached the Spirit Sea Realm, they could have three thousand-year soul spirits, supporting up to nine attached soul rings — and with that, they'd have a real chance at reaching the Title Douluo rank.
Of course, that was only theoretical. In human history, no one had ever reached Title Douluo with just three thousand-year soul spirits — it was simply too weak.
Under Gu You's lead, they tore through groups of hundred-year soul beasts, harvesting so much energy it overflowed. Gu You absorbed only a little, not that it did much for him.
Finally exhausted, Gu You called for a break.
"Everyone rest here for a bit. I'll help you push farther north afterward."
"Got it!" Zhang Yangzi answered, quickly climbing up a nearby tree and watching the distance from a branch, his black eagle soul spirit scanning another direction to monitor their surroundings.
Outside the platform, Wu Zhangkong nodded in approval. Even with a powerhouse like Gu You shielding them, they maintained strong counter-surveillance and didn't grow arrogant.
Tang Wulin and Xie Xie sat cross-legged to recover their soul power. Even though they hadn't used much, maintaining peak condition was crucial inside the Spirit Ascension Platform — it was the only way to last longer.
"Someone's coming. Three people: two boys, one girl. They look fifteen or sixteen. One is three-ringed, the other two have two rings each. Two of them show signs of recent energy absorption…"
