Disaster Apocalypse: Farming, Family, and My Hidden Secret Space

Chapter 428: Forced to Be a Saint

The busyness not only erased the urgency from her heart but also pleasantly expanded her range and control over spiritual power day by day.

Hua Jin didn't know the reason, but it was definitely related to what she was doing.

How afraid this space was that she might become a bad or selfish person!

This was forcing her to walk the path of sainthood!

Fortunately, it's just a general direction, otherwise Hua Jin would surely go crazy.

What is the most exhausting thing in the world? Of course, being a good person is the most exhausting.

This is not what she wanted to pursue.

The days she wanted were just peacefully lying down and enjoying life.

Alas, looking at the bright moonlight overhead, just thinking about it is enough; she still has to carry on!

Then containers of water in every household were filled, even though they were extremely cautious and restrained, delighted voices occasionally emanated from the darkness.

In one night, the entire city was traversed, and even with a resilient body, Hua Jin was so exhausted she nearly collapsed, retreating to her space to rest for half an hour and heal herself with delicious food before coming out again.

Heading to the last destination, the highest mansion in the city, the official residence of the Lord Governor of Yun City.

Unlike during the day, the official residence at night occasionally had guards and government officials patrolling, and dim firelights were lit in the rooms, indicating someone was working.

This indeed piqued Hua Jin's curiosity. Avoiding the patrolling guards, Hua Jin quietly appeared behind the house with firelight.

In this heat, no one would think someone would climb into the government office to eavesdrop, right?

"Have the water carriers set off?" A hoarse yet serious male voice reached Hua Jin's ears as soon as she got on the roof.

"Reporting to sir, they have been sent to the Western Mountain, still the amount for ten days..." Carefully lifting a tile, she saw a robust middle-aged man in guard attire, and before him, behind a desk, was another middle-aged man, leaner but with an air of authority.

The man nodded: "Hmm, continue. These days, continue to ensure we store enough water for them for two to three months." Thinking of the invading Northern Storehouse Tatars, the man, who was the Lord Governor of Lingyun State, felt as though a boulder was pressing on his chest, making it unbearably uncomfortable.

So General Sun and his troops must not encounter any accidents. If the Tatars from the Northern Storehouse invade again, Lingyun State's forces are far from sufficient. Therefore, even with the enormous daily water consumption, the government gritted its teeth and held on, fortunate to have harvested a batch of grain earlier; otherwise, it was uncertain if they could have sustained it.

Along with the subsequent planting of sweet potatoes in the fields, which, although only watered every half-month or even a month, were drought-resistant, offering some relief that they might yield a harvest, providing some solace.

"Yes," the guard bowed.

"Furthermore, water storage is of utmost urgency. Send more people in shifts at night to cut bamboo and wood, and speed up work at the carpenter and pottery workshops to produce as many water storage devices as possible. More storage cellars for water should also be prepared."

"My lord is concerned..."

"Yes, the water level of the Yun River, which hadn't dried up in a hundred years, is now decreasing, possibly unable to last much longer. We're essentially racing against time, and we cannot afford any slack, storing as much water as possible while the river still flows, else..."

The implied consequence needed no stating, as Captain Li understood it well.

"My lord, I will personally oversee it..." Captain Li knew the importance of water storage, sharing the urgency.

This place still had the Yun River; who knew how dire it was elsewhere.

"My lord, about the people..."

"Continue the allocation. They should have some stored; lasting an extra day is still an extra day, right?"

"Yes."

Seeing the official inside wave his hand, Hua Jin also concluded her eavesdropping.

Consideration for the people during such times was indeed commendable for a governor.

The Western Mountain, though mentioned only briefly, didn't hinder Hua Jin from deducing that a military force might be stationed there, possibly withdrawn from Yun City.

Spinning the thought in her mind, Hua Jin decided to check it out.

However, for now, she focused on accomplishing the most crucial task, closing her eyes to search her mind for the best place to place things.

Moments later, she opened her eyes, heading to the backyard of the mansion, choosing the backyard as the most suitable option, spacious and sparsely populated.

She also discovered a cellar or warehouse-like area under the mansion, not small in size, spanning several hundred square meters, where one portion was divided into numerous small rooms housing numerous people, presumably the official's family. The remaining space was storing large quantities of water and food.

Of course, not all the grains were in one pot. Hua Jin found several other locations, both underground and in house, indicating this official was indeed cautious.

Retracting her gaze, with a wave of her hand, hundreds of wooden barrels, the size of bathtubs, appeared in the backyard, stacked like a small mountain, barely noticeable in the dark.

These had been purposefully made by her father and grandfather in their spare time, intended for sweltering conditions, and she only took out a portion, leaving another part for the Western Mountain, should a military force be stationed there.

Some of the barrels were filled with water, and Hua Jin planned to leave the rest there. Seeing the piles of salt in the underground warehouse made her dismiss taking any salt, assuming the official had channels for salt, knowing the saltworks were controlled by the government, which Hua Jin understood well.

The barrels should store a considerable amount of water, fulfilling her intention for the visit, with some noise caused, she quickly disappeared from the mansion.

"My lord..." Before long, a guard shouted frantically outside the Lord Governor's office.

Meanwhile, Hua Jin, clear in her objective, drove straight out of the city towards the Western Mountain.

Had she not visited the city once before, she wouldn't have known where the Western Mountain was.

With previous reconnaissance, this time she didn't need her father, driving the vehicle like a giant beast through roads and forests, taking the time of a tea break to reach the foot of the Western Mountain.

Not in haste to ascend, Hua Jin retreated into her space with the car, had a snack, indulged in an ice cream, refused her father's offer to join, and exited the space.

Searching for people is faster alone.

In fact, Hua Jin didn't think it would be hard to find. After all, it was an army, numerous and conspicuous, with traces remaining despite any cover-up. Besides, with daily water deliveries, the tracks couldn't possibly be hidden, leading her easily following the tracks along the Western Mountain range, winding around several mountains into the depths, stopping in a verdant ravine.

Unsurprisingly, this was likely the military's summer retreat.

The ravine's environment was somewhat similar to the valley they inhabited, differing primarily in lower altitude; their valley was nestled between four mountains, topped by a massive cover, while the ravine was wedged between two mountains. The substantial mountain bodies provided relief, making it noticeably cooler than the outside, with ample space, a good place indeed.
