Chapter 343: Currying Favor.
She asked him, "What do you think about this expedition? Do you think it is going to be easy or difficult to drive out the vampires? Do you think we will fail or succeed in the attempt?"
He thought about it and said, "I think it is difficult. As for if we will succeed or not, I don't know."
She said, "Oh? Most of the soldiers believe that this expedition will be easy. After all, we only have demigods as the commander. Why do you think it will be difficult?"
He replied solemnly, "The fact that we only have demigods as commanders doesn't mean that this expedition will be easy. Expeditions of our level have been wiped out before."
"The world of the Sparkions comes to mind when I think about this. And from what I have heard, the vampire race have a thorn in our side for long time. Anything related to them can't be easy."
"Speaking of Sparkions, demigods might not be the strongest entity in the army. This adds further uncertainty to the situation of the expedition."
When she heard what he said, she laughed. "It seems you're highly observative. It also seems that you've ditched the shadow that used to accompany you."
His heart hung in his chest when he heard that. But he didn't show any abnormalities.
He asked calmly, "What do you mean?"
She replied, calmly too, "I mean that you used to be talkative. You always spoke with a hidden entity, which made others think you were crazy. But you haven't spoken with any hidden entity ever since you boarded the mothership. You are the first paragon from Earth-11 who doesn't do that. So either you are not the paragon from Earth-11 or you have severed the link between you and the will of your world."
Then she asked, "So which is it?"
He didn't know how to answer. He had two options, deny that he didn't know what she was talking about and stick with the option that he wasn't the paragon from Earth-11. Or he could admit that he had indeed cut Wrath off.
He didn't like both options, so he didn't rush to pick one. Besides, he felt that he should be careful with what he says since he doesn't know what is going on here. So he was more inclined to changing the subject.
But before he could speak, she said something.
"Please, don't take this conversation as me threatening you. I came here to foster a good relationship between us, not to create enmity."
That surprised him a little bit. It was only a little bit because Wrath had once claimed that Agaju came to him to kiss his ass. If she was right and a true god came to curry favor with him, then it is not that surprising that a demigod also came to him to foster a good relationship between them. It is appropriate even.
But he still asked the question he had in mind to use to change the subject of the conversation earlier. He was really curious, so he asked. "I hope you don't mind, but can you tell me how you recognized me?"
He wanted to know if every demigod can recognize him for what he truly is even though he was disguised. That is very important information, as it would determine how much danger demigods are to him on Earth-11.
She replied with a smile that he couldn't see, "I don't mind answering that question."
"You are hard to identify because you are not showing the golden tattoos. Fortunately, every superior commander is notified of important matters to pay attention to. One of those important matters is the presence of a paragon in the army."
"Your name and identity number were reported to me. So I can always find you through your mark."
He relaxed and sighed in relief. Then he said, "I see."
"To show my sincerity, I will tell you some of the things I was informed about you even though you didn't ask."
"I am to grant you certain privileges. But I am not to babysit you or let you throw your power around in the army. I am not to interfere in your development either. In case you die, I am to retrieve the ring of paragon for the Yggdrasil civilization."
He said, "Wow."
He was stunned that the superior commander wasn't ordered to save him. She wasn't even ordered to collect his corpse. All they care about is retrieving the ring of the paragon if he dies.
Then he bowed and said, "Thank you for your sincerity. As a token of my sincerity, I will tell you that I have cut off my bonds to the will of my world."
She said, "That's good news. It is unexpected news because not many people thought you could do it so soon. But it is great to hear that you've been unshackled."
"I take it that you received the help of a god."
He nodded. "Something like that."
She cocked her head and said, "Interesting. I take it that it wasn't free."
He nodded again.
She said, "I want it to be known that I am also available to help you. I can't compare with a god, but I can help with things that you can't approach a god for."
"If you need help with anything, just say so. It has to be of a limited extent because no one is allowed to interfere with the matter of the paragon too much. Of course, my help is not free. I won't lie to you that it is. I am doing this because I hope to receive a little bit of help from you in the future."
Kelvin still couldn't believe that a great demigod would be so open about seeking his favor. He decided to take advantage of the situation to know what his value is.
He asked her, "Just what is so great about being a paragon? I know that this gives me the qualifications to become the god king of my world. But I don't know the full value of that title. What is the difference between a true god and a god king?
