DC: Becoming Doomsday in Marvel Universe

Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Face-to-Face with Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Rook still followed Coulson out without resistance. It wasn't that he feared S.H.I.E.L.D.'s threats lurking in the shadows, far from it. He had already more or less guessed what they were after.

Since Nick Fury and his team now knew he was an alien, it was obvious they wanted to interrogate him.

Rook wasn't afraid of that at all. In fact, he was even a little curious about how they planned to handle him. Would they go straight to torture? Or would they send in Natasha with some kind of honey trap? Should he let himself get ensnared, or pretend to be a gentleman?

Ah, what a tough choice. After all, while he had the body of a Kryptonian now, Rook's mind was still that of an ordinary man, not some saint.

So yes, sometimes he had a bit of a mischievous streak.

Coulson led him out the main doors of Stark Industries, where a car was already waiting. Coulson opened the door courteously and gestured for Rook to get in first.

Rook, acting as if he didn't notice, subtly observed Coulson signaling to the hidden agents that the subject had been retrieved peacefully and there was no need for further weapons readiness.

With a smile, Rook settled into the passenger seat, looking for all the world like he had no idea just how many agents had their sights trained on him.

Coulson got behind the wheel. On the surface, it looked like he had come alone, keeping up the charade.

He started the car and drove off. Rook didn't bother asking why, with Fury right there in a hotel room nearby, they didn't just head straight there. He knew exactly what Coulson was doing. The agent took him on a long, winding route to give Fury and the other agents including Hawkeye and Natasha time to reposition.

Rook found it amusing, but played along.

Eventually, they arrived at a quiet residential area. One of the buildings there was a S.H.I.E.L.D. safehouse, normally used only in emergencies. Today, it had been activated.

Rook could guess that after today, this location would be abandoned. Safehouses were meant for critical moments, and their locations were closely guarded secrets, even from many within S.H.I.E.L.D. Once used, they were considered compromised.

Clearly, Fury was taking this meeting seriously. He didn't want word getting out that he had met with Rook. This was as discreet as it got.

Rook followed Coulson inside. The moment he stepped through the door, four hands shot out from either side, trying to grab his arms.

Without hesitation, Rook reached out, grabbed the door handle, and slammed it shut with force.

The door opened outward, which was the only reason those two agents could have hidden behind it. The fact that it opened outward also made it possible for Rook to pull this move. If it had swung inward, he wouldn't have been able to close it like that.

There was a loud thud as the door slammed. Rook glanced at Coulson, who was now sweating. "Wrong address, maybe?" he asked dryly.

Coulson was flustered. He hadn't expected Fury to pull this kind of stunt. This wasn't how it was supposed to go.

From inside came a hearty laugh. "I told you this guy was sharp. Didn't believe me? Bet you do now."

The agents inside had taken the hit like pros, though — a little pain was nothing they couldn't handle.

The door opened again, revealing Nick Fury standing there with his usual imposing presence. On either side of him were Natasha and Hawkeye, each massaging one of their hands, grimacing slightly. So those were the four hands Rook had smacked with the door.

Natasha and Hawkeye were among the best of the best. In the movie universe, they were two of the original six Avengers. Fury had recalled them under emergency orders, after hearing about the alien visitor with powers beyond comprehension.

Fury probably knew more than he let on, maybe even everything about what Rook had done in the desert.

But Natasha and Clint didn't know the full story. They just felt a bit indignant and had wanted to test him, maybe give him a little taste of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s strength. Hence the ambush.

It was a good thing they didn't actually mean harm. If they had, Rook wouldn't have stopped at slamming a door.

They would have lost more than just a little feeling in their hands.

If Rook had sensed any real threat, a single kick each would have sent them flying.

As for Fury, his appearance needed no introduction. The movie version matched the comic version quite well. Fury was known for his eyepatch — on his left eye, according to him lost during an early mission. He'd even once growled that trusting someone had cost him that eye.

Of course, that was Fury talking. As we all know, Captain Marvel revealed the truth. He lost it to a cat. Or rather, a Flerken. Maybe trusting that big orange furball was his real mistake.

"Rook Tanner. The bodyguard Tony Stark brought back. I hear you're an alien?" Fury got right to the point. That was all they had on Rook for now.

S.H.I.E.L.D. had tried to dig up more, but it was like Rook had appeared out of thin air. Their usual methods, no matter how thorough, had turned up nothing. It was as if he hadn't existed until the moment Stark found him.

They had already questioned the soldiers who'd seen him and confirmed his extraterrestrial nature.

"Mind if we have a chat?" Fury stepped aside, inviting Rook in.

Rook strolled in without a care. As he passed Natasha and Hawkeye, he smirked. "Not going to try that again, are you?"

They exchanged sheepish looks. Lesson learned.

Rook glanced around the room, taking it all in before turning to Fury. "Let's not waste time. Call off your snipers and your agents. They can't touch me. Not even an atom bomb could."

Fury's expression shifted. He hadn't expected Rook to be this blunt.
