Chapter 12: Chapter 12: S.H.I.E.L.D. Comes Knocking?
Pepper was indeed beautiful, but Rook had no intention of actually pursuing her. The reason was simple, Pepper's heart was clearly set on Tony. Rook wasn't the kind to be that tactless.
In the end, Tony handed over the Mark I blueprint to Rook. After much discussion, he had come to agree with Rook's logic.
Now that it was clear there was a traitor in their midst, someone actively plotting Tony's death, Tony realized that Rook wasn't just acting on a whim. Rook obviously already had a suspect in mind, otherwise he wouldn't have insisted on delivering the blueprint.
Of course, for now it was still just a suspicion. Until the traitor made a move, they had no real evidence.
So Tony entrusted the blueprint to Rook, and at the same time, began updating the Mark I based on Rook's guidance. What started as a clunky pile of metal evolved, as Tony stripped away the useless parts and added innovative features. The result was the classic, iconic Iron Man suit we all know.
But this was just the beginning. Building it would take time, experiment after experiment.
By then, Rook had already set out alone. He carried the blueprint in a briefcase, dressed sharply in a black suit with a tie and sunglasses, and made his way to Stark Industries.
He hadn't even made it upstairs when someone intercepted him in the lobby.
"Excuse me, sir. Are you Mr. Rook Tanner?" A man in a matching black suit stepped forward to block his path.
Rook stopped and nodded. "That's me."
The man spoke formally. "We're with the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division. We need you to come with us for a matter of national security."
Rook blinked. "Huh? Say that again?"
It wasn't that he hadn't heard it clearly. The name was just such a mouthful that it sounded like a tongue twister. He wanted to see if the guy could really repeat it without tripping over his own words.
The agent opened his mouth, hesitated, and finally gave up. "Just... please come with us."
Rook shrugged and muttered, "Why not just say S.H.I.E.L.D.?"
The agent froze, staring at Rook in disbelief.
That's right. The so-called Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division was none other than the legendary S.H.I.E.L.D. It wasn't some old name from before. According to established history, S.H.I.E.L.D. had been around since the 80s or 90s. Tony's father, Howard Stark, had even helped found it.
The official name was always that mouthful, but at some point they smartened up and just went by S.H.I.E.L.D. No one wanted to remember all that.
What puzzled the agent was how Rook knew to call them that. After all, S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn't yet a household name.
Rook just smiled faintly. He even recognized the man in front of him — Phil Coulson himself.
Agent Coulson, one of Nick Fury's most trusted operatives and one of the few with the highest clearance.
It was Coulson who had come to fetch him.
"I'm a bit busy. Can we do this another day?" Rook asked, testing the waters. He had planned to deliver the blueprint to Obadiah, pushing him to build the Iron Monger as soon as possible.
That's right. Rook hadn't told Tony who the traitor was, but he knew perfectly well it was Obadiah. The man was the Iron Monger — Iron Man's first true enemy.
But Coulson didn't budge. Smiling politely, he said, "I promise it won't take long."
Yeah, right. Rook wasn't buying that for a second. He could see through all of it — the cars full of agents outside, Nick Fury himself watching from a nearby floor, directing the operation. Even Black Widow and Hawkeye had taken up hidden positions, ready to strike at a moment's notice.
None of this escaped Rook's super senses. Others might not realize it, but with his enhanced sight and hearing, Rook picked up everything.
He even overheard Fury on the comms, giving orders. "If he so much as twitches, take him down. Use tranquilizers."
"Yes, sir," Natasha and Clint answered in unison.
Natasha couldn't help but ask, "Sir, is he really an alien? He looks normal enough."
Clint was curious too. "I can't believe aliens actually exist. This is wild."
Fury stayed cool as ever. He thought to himself that he'd dealt with shapeshifting Skrulls years ago and had even met Goose, a Flerken that could swallow planets whole. People wouldn't believe the dangers that lurked behind a cute orange cat face.
But he kept those thoughts to himself. For now, Rook might well be the first extraterrestrial Earth had ever knowingly encountered.
Rook heard all of it and realized the truth. Those soldiers from before must have sold him out, and now S.H.I.E.L.D. was here to interrogate him.
No escaping this one.
"Fine. Let's get this over with," Rook said, deciding not to make a scene. The last thing he needed was unnecessary trouble. Earth's weapons were a joke to him. Even in the greater Marvel Universe, few weapons could actually harm him.
Not even the Infinity Stones combined could pose a threat. It sounded crazy, but it was true. After all, Darkseid had crushed Thanos even when Thanos wielded the Infinity Gauntlet. And with the revelation that Darkseid had a true form, all past versions of his power were effectively downgraded.
Rook had once fought that true form of Darkseid head-on. Sure, as Superman he'd lost — even died — but after being reborn as Doomsday, he'd defeated Darkseid's true form.
And now, after spending a hundred thousand years absorbing the sun's power, Rook was beyond compare. Even Darkseid himself couldn't match him anymore, let alone Thanos.
He'd mused before that in this Marvel universe without Kryptonite, wasn't he basically invincible? Unless the One Above All personally intervened.
How did the saying go? He wasn't targeting anyone in particular. It's just that compared to him, everyone else in this universe was trash.
Of course, there was no need to go that far. Rook had no interest in becoming Earth's enemy. That would be more trouble than it was worth. Conquering the planet would mean having to govern it — what a headache.
So, without fuss, Rook followed Coulson.
Before he left, he handed the briefcase to a nearby staffer. "Give this to Obadiah. Tell him if he wants to unlock its secrets, he'll need to pay up."
