DanMachi: Ultimate Lich King

Chapter 88: DULK: Chapter 88

After Jubstacheit explained the Holy Grail to Arthas, he was intrigued. Using the Grail to return to Orario seemed like the best option.

Arthas couldn't think of another way. As for Jubstacheit's mention of the Second Magic user, even if he could be found, why would he help? Someone who could freely travel between worlds wouldn't be easily persuaded.

And even if someone agreed to help, returning to his world wasn't guaranteed.

No one knew how far this world was from Orario.

Arthas's only concern was… whether the Grail was as miraculous as Jubstacheit claimed, capable of fulfilling his wish.

But he had no choice; he had to strive for the Grail.

"When does the Holy Grail War start… what do I need to do? And… if the Grail can fulfill any wish, why didn't you try to obtain it, instead giving this opportunity to an outsider?"

Arthas looked at Jubstacheit, who shook his head.

"I've lived too long. My mana remains strong, but my decaying soul can't attract powerful Servants. My persistence in the Holy Grail War is perhaps due to regret? Regret at the Einzbern family's failures over the years, as one of the founding three families."

"For over two hundred years, the Einzbern family hasn't won once. How pathetic? I want a victory for the Einzbern family; I want to witness the Grail's arrival in Einzbern before I die!"

Jubstacheit said excitedly, a surge of energy emanating from the old man. His cloudy eyes shone with fervent light.

Arthas recognized this light; it was the same light in the eyes of adventurers fighting for their Familia's honor in Orario.

For the family's honor… A thousand-year-old family unable to fulfill this wish.

"I understand. I'll help you obtain the Grail, in the name of the Einzbern family."

Jubstacheit shook his head.

"No. Other mages won't accept you as the Einzbern head. Therefore, I want you to marry my granddaughter, Illya, and join the Einzbern family."

Jubstacheit said; Illya blushed; Arthas looked troubled.

He didn't fully understand the concept of joining a family through marriage, but marrying another woman was unacceptable; he loved Riveria.

"But… I have someone I love in another world."

Jubstacheit said nonchalantly.

"It's settled. I'll arrange your wedding with Illya. Illya, let's go; don't disturb your future husband."

"Yes, Grandfather."

Illya sighed softly; before leaving, she turned, smiling at Arthas.

"We'll leave now, Mr. Arthas. If you need anything, call a maid."

"Are… you being forced?"

Arthas's sudden question made Illya tremble.

"Wh… what? I'm following Grandfather's wishes."

"Then… will you marry me?"

Arthas asked again; Illya didn't turn; her bitter expression would be revealed.

"Of course. Mr. Arthas, such a young and powerful mage, is very attractive. I'm pleased with Grandfather's arrangement."

"I see. Go, Miss Illya."

Arthas heard the strain in Illya's voice but didn't press further.

"Goodbye, Mr. Arthas. Please rest well."

Illya left quickly, leaving Arthas alone.

"The Holy Grail War…"

He sighed. According to Jubstacheit, the war would begin in ten years; he'd have to stay here for at least ten years, married to another woman.

He didn't dislike Illya; on the contrary, he saw something similar to Riveria in her, something alluring like poppies.

He didn't understand this strange feeling, but he couldn't control his desire.

"I feel bad for Riveria…"

He smiled wryly; though he'd mentioned having a wife to Jubstacheit, his tone had been hesitant, meaning he'd almost agreed to marry Illya.

"But I have no choice… Riveria will… forgive me, right?"

Arthas said weakly; despite guilt, he intended to marry Illya.

But… there was a problem: Illya's attitude…

Arthas hadn't suspected Jubstacheit, but… his exchange with Illya revealed something.

Something… is wrong with Jubstacheit…
