Chapter 13: The Hilltop Haven
Whatever she felt toward Chris, she still hoped he would return to the Starlight Hotel to enjoy dinner with her. That was before he called to inform her that he would not come.
Tylia tries to be positive. There was a tiny spark of relief after she finally pieced together the puzzle.
Staying at the hotel only added to her misery. She needed some time to settle her emotions. So, she decided to leave and strolled through the lively city.
The night was far from over. Around her, there were romantic views as couples enjoyed their celebration. Tylia huffed as she sighed. A cold breath left her mouth.
After a moment, Tylia felt tired from walking. She searched for a bench in the park and sat down. She massaged her sore legs. The weather was getting colder, and she didn't want to return to the hotel. Tylia sat there a couple more minutes later as she didn't know where to go. However, she did not notice someone watching her from afar.
Back to the night when Theo visited her, he retrieved a gold band from Tylia's finger and examined it. It was a love potion that made people unable to reason and a little foolish. Theo wondered who would be capable of doing such witchcraft.
Theo decided to tell Tylia himself. He went to the hospital today to visit Elara and intended to meet Tylia, but she was not there. Lilian told him Tylia was at the Starlight Hotel in Rosemary City for dinner. He just took a chance to come by. Luckily, he managed to meet her.
Theo slowly approached Tylia and said, "Aren't you cold sitting here?"
Tylia's eyes widened as she startled, "Oh! How did... you are here?"
"Your mother said you had dinner with your fiancé. Where is he?" Theo's question made Tylia quiet.
And he asked again, "Did you two fight?"
Tylia lowered her head as her hand clenched her dress. "He didn't come," she whispered. This time, Theo was the one who fell silent, unsure of how to react.
"You will get cold if you sit here any longer. Come, I will send you home," he said, but Tylia didn't want to.
She shook her head and said, "I want to be alone. I don't want to go home." Theo was taken aback at her answer. A flicker of concern crossed his face as he studied her expression. She looked fragile, her usual fire dimmed by something deeper than disappointment. He hesitated for a moment before he stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Ms Jackson…" he started, but the words caught in his throat. Instead of pressing her, he sighed and softened his stance.
"If you don't mind, I have a place. Come, do you want to follow me?" Theo asked, assuming Tylia might refuse.
But she nodded as she agreed. Theo was relieved. He then directed Tylia towards his car. The first five minutes of their rides passed in a thick, unspoken tension. It was Theo who finally broke the silence, his voice gentle but unsure.
Theo asked, "Did your family know your fiancé was not coming?"
Tylia shook her head and replied, "I'll tell them later, as soon as I'm home."
"I'll bring you back to my house. So, can I tell your mother or at least Logan?" Theo was actually trying to understand Tylia's situation.
Theo's question made her think maybe she was a burden to Theo, as he had to be responsible after bringing her back to his place.
So she said, "I just want to be alone tonight. If my family finds out, they will come and take me home. If my presence becomes your problem, you can drop me here."
She felt regretted following Theo. Maybe Theo would agree to drop her there, and she needed to walk back to Central Park, where she sat before deciding to follow Theo.
"Oh no!" Theo cursed silently. It seems like he made a mistake. The young lady next to him just now in a swing mood.
He immediately pulled over to the side of the road. His brow furrowed as he turned to face her. "I'm not dropping you off. You're not a burden," he said gently.
He was trying to offer reassurance. "If you need space, that's okay. But I'm not letting you walk back in the dark alone." He waited for her response, and Tylia nodded.
After a moment, they passed through the hillside area bordering the sea. The view of the sea was on the driver's side. The view was limited at night, but the smell of salty breeze reached her nose. Tylia took a deep breath as she closed her eyes. Tylia felt relaxed.
"It's refreshing," she whispered.
Theo would have rolled down the window so she could enjoy the breeze, but he didn't because it was pretty cold. Tylia noticed they were heading up to the hill. Excitedly, she asked, "Is your house up there on the hill?" She pointed in front of her.
"Yes," he said, and that short answer delighted her. Theo sensed her mood had improved.
"Do you like it?" he asked, smiling.
"Of course! How many more minutes until we arrive?" she asked excitedly.
"We're almost there," Theo replied, grinning at Tylia's antics.
Not long after that, they were close to the top of the hill. Tylia's eyes brightened as she said excitedly, "Don't tell me your house was at the top!"
That made Theo laugh. "That it is!" he said, confirmed.
As the car pulled in front of the gate, Theo invited her, "Let's go!"
Tylia stepped out of the car and stood. She took her time scanning the surroundings. From there, she spotted a view of the sea and the distant shiplights. It was captivating!
Theo's house stood gracefully atop the hill. The soft golden glow from the lamppost illuminated the front of the house, and crickets could be heard, too.
Theo unlocked the door and looked back, seeing Tylia still outside the gate.
He shouted, "Hey, come inside. It's cold out there!"
"I'm coming!" Tylia ran and smiled joyfully like a child who had just got candy. Theo chuckled while waiting for Tylia at the door.
Theo held the door until Tylia entered the house. He closed and locked the door and handed her a pair of slippers.
She changed her boots into slippers and shrugged off her jacket. Theo took it and hung it near the door. Tylia followed Theo to the small, cosy living room.
He waved and said, "Make yourself comfortable."
Tylia nodded as she walked around. In the corner of the house was a small kitchen with floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Tylia gasped, and she ran towards the kitchen.
Tylia barely contained her excitement when she discovered that the view she saw outside earlier could be seen from the kitchen.
Tylia held both cheeks, turned to Theo, and said, "It's amazing!"
Theo grinned and asked, "Are you hungry?"
"I'm starting to get hungry," Tylia replied.
"What do you want for dinner?" Theo stepped towards the kitchen, opened the old fridge, and scanned for ingredients. "Anything, I don't mind!" Tylia grinned, still standing by the mirror wall.
"Chicken Teriyaki?" Theo asked.
"I could try it," Tylia replied.
Theo brewed hot cocoa and placed it on the kitchen table. He motioned, "Drink first. Warm yourself up a bit."
Tylia sat down and slowly sipped hot cocoa while enjoying the view outside. Theo, who sat slightly at her side, cast a glance, observing her gleeful mood.
He interrupted her good mood, saying, "There is a bedroom on the left, and a bathroom inside. You can clean yourself first."
Tylia nodded. As she finished her drink, she stood up. She turned around a bit and scanned. Immediately, Tylia spotted the bedroom door on the left side. She quickly brought her beg, entered the bedroom.
After a moment, Tylia found herself relaxed, soaked in hot water. While Tylia was bathing, someone rang the bell and entered the house from the back door.
Alfred was Theo's assistant, who took care of the house. He was an older man living in a small house a little below from there. He entered after getting permission. Theo told him something, and he left the house.
