Chapter 56: New Intel
Their tense shoulders quickly eased.
I noticed the holographic name tag on their overalls.
The first was a rough-bearded man called Ben.
The second was a pudgy man called Noah.
"Haahaaha.... So that's the reason you pulled out your weapon. We almost thought that you were going to attack us. Fortunately, that wasn't the case," Ben laughed nervously, as he cleared the sweat on his brow and said.
He briefly hesitated before asking, "Are you the tenant here?"
I nodded in response.
"My partner and I were summoned by the dorm supervisor, Sinbad, to repair the damages in your room. Now that the repair is completed, we'll be on our way," Ben quickly gestured with his eyes at his partner as he attempted to walk around me with hurried steps.
The other quickly followed behind them.
However, I blocked their path.
Their smiles stiffened.
"Young noble, please..."
"I just want to ask you a few questions," I injected, ensuring they understood that I meant no harm.
The academy has a strict policy against attacking workers. A majority of whom were normal human beings, and I wasn't foolish enough to break it.
Both men's expressions still didn't ease.
"What are your questions, young noble? As long as we have the answer, we'll answer to the best of our capabilities," Ben responded.
"I heard that the technicians were food poisoned. The security system has malfunctioned, and until specialists from the surrounding cities arrive, the entire academy is on total lockdown," I asked. "How true is that?"
Instantly, the two men's expressions eased.
"Please, stop playing with us like that, young noble. We thought that you were going to ask us about something much more serious," Noah said with a chuckle.
Ben slammed his elbow back into his partner's gut.
"Ouch!" Noah grunted in pain.
"Please don't forgive my partner's unsatisfactory response, young noble. He doesn't know that due to your rigorous training, you're not usually in touch with mundane issues like this."
Ben quickly bowed his head low and apologised.
Noah quickly bowed as well, his body trembling.
"Don't worry about it," I dismissed the matter. "All I want is an answer to my question."
Anything beyond this would create more misunderstandings and make them fearful of coming here in the future.
That would be a disastrous outcome if my dorm room were vandalised again.
They sighed deeply in relief.
They straightened their backs, but their heads continued to be bowed low.
"The information you have is correct -the security sensors. The camera and the entire security system are currently malfunctioning. And it isn't only in the Magical Swordsman department but also across the entire academy."
I listened with a deep frown.
"According to what we know, this was all due to a mysterious magical interference that emerged from the dungeons. Previously, it wasn't an issue as the academy had enough hands and was well-prepared for such emergencies."
"However, it began occurring frequently, hampering all of our systems. Sigh! Even the dungeon robotic clerks were affected. Right now, the repair crews in each department are ensuring that their security systems are operational."
"However, the repair crews within the Magical Swordsman Department were suddenly food-poisoned due to a repair crew who had been smuggling potions from the academy to sell them outside."
"He had unknowingly contaminated their food supplies by storing them in the same area. The nurses reported that the contamination has been happening for several weeks now, so they have been taken to the intensitive care units for proper check-ups and treatment."
"After their recovery, the repairman will surely face punishment from the academy, and the entire repair crew will be put under probation for a while. In the meantime, the academy has called for specialists from the surrounding cities. "
"It's unknown when they will be here because they need to undergo vetting, along with some other processes. So until then, the entire academy is on lockdown."
"That's all I know."
Ben finished speaking. He became silent.
This...
I had been engrossed in my training that I had almost missed something so significant transpiring within the academy.
I had thought that it was the Zahara Clan's descendants that had planned everything, but they had only taken advantage of the ensuing chaos.
However, there was no way an ordinary repairman could get his hands on a potion unless he had help from someone from the inside.
So I was sure that they were still responsible for the food poisoning of the repair crew, alongside the disciplinary committee's broken lie detector.
Suddenly -
[ ◆I am innocent.
Progress: 24%. ]
My expression almost turned to surprise after reading the system alert.
I had gained a ten per cent increase from this information alone.
I quickly arrived at another conclusion.
I looked at the maintenance workers.
"Does this mean that the academy is under attack?" I asked.
Both men were stunned by my question.
I understood their shock.
No one was foolish enough to attack one the most prestigious hero academies, filled with students and powerful instructors in Thunder Sky fortress.
Not only would they have to be prepared to face the entire academy, but also the various influential and formidable backgrounds of the students within the academy.
It wasn't a terrorist attack, but a suicidal mission.
"I'm sorry, but we don't know whether the academy is under attack or not," Ben responded.
He hesitated to continue speaking.
"Go ahead," I said. "I'll pretend this conversation never happened."
Ben slightly calmed down.
"Although we aren't sure about what's going on. There has been a report that the repair crews across the other departments are finding it challenging to keep up with the frequent need for repairs," Ben said.
"If this continues, then half the systems of the academy would also fail."
He swallowed, then continued, "So the specialist that the academy is bringing over from the city isn't only for the Magical Swordman department but also for the entire department. They need to fill the quota, and that's why no one knows when they would arrive."
