Chapter 137: Chapter 137: The Conclusion Of A Study in Murder (Part 1)
The transition in the film was exceptionally swift.
That night, amidst the rainy darkness, Kokutou Mikiya arrived at the front of the Ryougi family estate. The house was a roughly mimicked structure, retaining an essentially Western architectural style.
Under the pitch-black night sky, the rain wasn't pouring torrentially, but it was far from a light drizzle.
Mikiya stood amidst the forest, drenched in rain. Holding an umbrella in one hand and a thermos in the other, he gazed silently at the Ryougi family's estate.
"Whew~"
Exhaling deeply, Mikiya's expression revealed fatigue—not from the rain, but from Shiki's abnormal behavior earlier that evening.
As he continued to ponder, a louder sound suddenly caught his attention.
Splash!
It was an exceptionally loud sound of water splashing.
When Mikiya turned his head, he saw a girl in a red outfit standing in the rain before him.
Without even an umbrella, she stood exposed to the freely falling raindrops. Completely soaked, she looked as though she'd been pulled from the depths of the sea. Her short hair clung to her cheeks, and her eyes, hidden beneath her black locks, exuded emptiness.
"Shiki!"
Seeing this, Mikiya first reacted with surprise, followed by genuine concern.
He immediately approached Shiki, offering his umbrella and pulling a towel from his bag.
"Here, dry yourself. What are you doing? Your home is right here…"
While scolding her with worry, he extended his hand.
But just as Mikiya showed his concern, Shiki's face curled into an eerie smile.
Then, Swish!
A white blade sliced through the air.
Hot blood flowed from Mikiya's arm.
'Did I get cut?'
'The wound's on my arm?'
'Why?'
'I can't move?'
A whirlwind of thoughts flashed through his mind. The pain, so sharp, numbed his senses as he instinctively recoiled.
But to his greater shock, Shiki moved like a ghost, swiftly attacking him.
"Ah~ahhh!!!"
Driven by primal fear, Mikiya fled desperately. The two began a chase in the night.
Meanwhile, as the film played, the audience exploded in astonishment.
"What the hell?! What's going on?"
"Did Shiki really resolve to kill Mikiya?"
"Why would she do that? Is she really just a crazed murderer?"
"This makes no sense!"
Cries of shock and confusion echoed as everyone was thrown off by the sudden turn of events. Until then, few believed Shiki would truly harm Mikiya. Even if she claimed she would kill him, most thought she was merely speaking out of frustration.
Without the film delving deeply into Shiki's mental state, most viewers couldn't comprehend her motives for attacking Mikiya.
In the Imperial Mage Academy's Grand Plaza, students were also buzzing with discussion.
"Could this be SHIKI acting? Shiki's alternate personality said she was the destructive one, right? Maybe it's her doing this."
"But SHIKI's combat skills are far superior to what we just saw. If it were her, Mikiya would've been dead in an instant."
"Maybe she's holding back?"
As speculation swirled, a student from the Mental and Spiritual Studies Branch offered an analysis:
"I think this has to do with Shiki's dual personalities."
"Considering that people with dual personalities perceive things differently, Shiki might've acted out of a stress response. She can't determine whether Mikiya's feelings for her are genuine and fears his presence will disrupt the balance between her personalities, leading to her collapse. To avoid that, she decided to kill him before things reached a breaking point."
"This also explains why she's been so hostile towards Mikiya—she's always wanted him to leave her world. But his persistence forced her hand, compelling her to take extreme measures."
Hearing this analysis, the surrounding students nodded in agreement and voiced admiration.
"Wow! Such deep insights into personality and psychology from just a short segment? Truly remarkable!"
"Indeed! The Mental and Spiritual Studies Branch usually gets overlooked, but it has hidden talents like this! Amazing!"
"Amazing."
Enjoying the praise, the Mental and Spiritual Studies Branch student made a dramatic gesture and laughed:
"Hahaha! Of course! This level of analysis is trivial for me, Werner Florentis II, the Evil Sorcerer of the Dark Dimension, the Phoenix Reborn, the Villain Who Strikes Fear in the Undead, the Dimensional Voyager, the Witness of Malevolent Reality, and the Destroyer of Bureaucratic Mechanisms!"
"Uh… what?"
The crowd was dumbfounded by his eccentric self-introduction until a red-haired girl in a white lab coat emerged from the group, grabbed Werner's arm, and loudly declared:
"Sorry for my idiotic senior! This guy's an eternal student in the Mental and Spiritual Studies Branch—Goblin! He just loves saying weird things. Please don't take him seriously."
"Hey! Clarisse the Thirty-Fourth! How dare you talk to me like this? I told you not to call me by my real name—it could alert the enemy agents!"
"Shut it! If you don't take this seriously and watch the film, I'll report you to Arch Mage Rosa and have all your credits revoked. You'll never graduate!"
"Oh nooooo!"
Amid their peculiar interaction, the other students distanced themselves from the pair of oddballs, unwilling to linger any longer.
At the same time, as this minor sideshow played out, the chase in the film had come to an end.
With bated breath, everyone awaited the conclusion of this intense encounter.
Finally, the story was moving towards the climactic end of "A Study in Murder – Part 1."
