Chapter 21: Lost in Thought
The next day...
Qianqian had planned to leave early in the morning, knowing she would need the entire day to get what she needed.
As she packed up her gear and made the final preparations to head out, her mind buzzed with the tasks ahead.
She had a lot to buy—furniture for the office building, solar equipment for power, and a range of essentials for the base.
The system had informed her that no access to electricity or water would be granted, leaving Qianqian with no choice but to figure it out herself.
But just as she was about to walk out the door, a soft whining sound reached her ears.
At first, she tried to ignore it, assuming it was just another noise from the wild. But when the whining grew louder and more persistent, she turned toward the sound, sighing.
In the corner of the room, the cubs—still small and unsure of their surroundings—sat by the door, their eyes wide and full of uncertainty.
They had grown accustomed to her presence, but today, something about them seemed off. They looked at her with those big, pleading eyes, and Qianqian's resolve softened.
No, she thought. I can't leave them here alone.
The cubs had been with her for a while now, and she had grown attached to them.
She also realised that she had barricade the while base with a wall which makes it hard for them to go out to hunt for now,she was planning to stay away for a week so she couldn't leave them here all alone.
Sighing, Qianqian walked over to the cubs, crouching down to their level. Their big eyes followed her movements with evident longing, as if they could sense her hesitation. Their soft whining continued, and it tugged at her heart.
"Alright, alright," she muttered under her breath. "You win. I'll take you with me."
The cubs immediately stopped whining, their ears perking up in excitement. They seemed to understand that she had relented, and their tails wagged in pure joy.
Qianqian shook her head in exasperation, but a smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "This is going to be more complicated than I thought."
Despite the tasks ahead of her, Qianqian couldn't help but smile at the sight of the cubs. They may have been a handful, but they were hers to protect.
And as Echo's playful voice chimed in her head, "Looks like the cubs are going with you. Good choice, Qianqian. Who else would you trust them with?" she couldn't help but agree.
"Guess it's us against the world," she whispered, giving the cubs a glance.
After this, she quickly loaded the car and after setting the cubs in the car, zoomed off.
Qianqian slowed down as she drove into her brother's compound. She has been staying with him for sometime now.
As she got out of the car,the cubs quickly tried to get out as well. She laughed as they stumbled on each other trying to get out first, "calm down, take it easy", she said in between laughter.
She unlocked the door and stood aside as they got in, "Okay, listen up", she said grabbing their attention.
They quickly lined up and looked at her, posing like little soldiers. "I don't want any noise and absolutely nothing should be destroyed, understood?"
They all meowed in unison.
"Tank", she called out turning to the young cub, "keep your eyes on Bolt, will you? Knock him unconscious if you have to, you have my permission."
Bolt whimpered as he moved away from Tank.
Qianqian went into her room to freshen up, after that she went into the kitchen as she was hungry, she fixed herself a late breakfast and found canned beef, which she set out for the cubs.
After making sure the cubs were all fed,she picked up her phone as she walked into the living room.
It was currently 8am,she thought of locking up the cubs and going out but quickly thought against it, her brother would kill her if they destroyed anything important.
Luckily for her, the Internet still existed. She quickly searched up furniture stores and began ordering, she bought bed stands, beds, seats, cushions and so on.
She ordered everything in bulk and wrote down the warehouse address for the delivery.
Then she moved on to electronics, she ordered as much computers as she could, as well as office seats and set them up for delivery.
Then she moved on to fabrics, this time she included bed sheets, and also bought more clothes, she already had as much clothes as possible but nothing ever seemed to be enough.
She then went into solar panels, she didn't know when exactly she would sort out their electricity problem but till then they would have to depend on solar, she also ordered appliances that worked with solar as well.
Due to the large quantity she ordered, it would take three days for it to be ready and delivered.
She dropped her phone and stared ahead lost in thought. "Let's not forget the water problem as well", Echo quietly reminded her.
Qianqian sat up at the reminder, "God, no". She groaned. "what am I supposed to do now." She pondered. This was going to be a very big problem.
She quickly opened the system's interface and tapped on the map, she hoped to find something indicating a stream or river of some sort.
"You're not going to find anything, you know. You must venture into the forest yourself to find it and update the map",Echo continued.
"Or we can just ask someone",Qianqian replied smiling. She had just remembered the little village she always passed on her way to the base and in theory, villages should be close to streams or any form of water source.
Echo groaned, "Oh for crying out loud, you need to explore the forest for once, you might end up hitting a gold mine, you never know plus, it might give you points too. You're running low on points if I may add."
At the reminder of her low points, Qianqian felt more depressed, "Fine, we'll explore alright."
Qianqian spent the rest of the day ordering all kinds of stuff.
By 10pm Jinhai finally came home. "You're here, that's a suprise, how's the base."
"It's okay. I'll be taking everyone to the base on Saturday, I need you to come as well."
Jinhai paused, "Everyone?"
"Yeah,I just want to get this over with, Let's do this once and for all. I want everything to be done by August." Qianqian was already getting tired of keeping everything to herself.
"Fine then, let's do this." He agreed.
He quickly took out his phone to text his sister, but then quickly decided again it, he asked turning to Qianqian, "time?"
"4am,I ordered a lot of things that need to be transported, the earlier we leave, the better for us. It's a good thing that most of the villagers are old people, if they were any younger, they would have been sniffing around considering how often we move things."
Qianqian then took out her phone and made a call to Wei Jian.
The call was connected almost immediately.
"The goods are yet to be transported ",came a voice from the other end.
"I didn't even get a hello",Qianqian replied, her voice laced with laughter," I wasn't talking about the goods though "
"What do you need then?"
"Saturday, I need you all on Saturday"
"Where are we headed to?"
"The answer to all your questions."
There was a pause on the other end of the call.
Qianqian continued, "4am, the warehouse on X Lane. Rui Feng included."
She proceeded to end the call and dial Lin Mei's number.
The call took longer to be connected.
Qianqian relayed the same message before she hung up.
"It'll be okay, worst that would happen,we'll keep the person locked up in the base till then",Echo said trying to lift her spirit yet failing to get anything out of her.
She spent the rest of the night lost in thought.
