Chapter 22: Solar set up
28th May,3018
The air was damp with the coolness of early morning as the faint glow of the moonlight spilled over the warehouse. It was an odd hour, and everyone present felt it. The tension in the air was palpable, confusion written across their faces as they stood in small groups.
It was currently 4:05 am, everyone was gathered at the warehouse.
Wei Jian glanced at his brothers, Long Hao, Rui Feng and Lei Ming, before turning his eyes to Jinhai, who was pacing near the entrance. Lin Mei and Lin Na exchanged uneasy glances, whispering quietly, while Xiaoyu, looking half-asleep, leaned against a stack of crates.
"Why did she call us here at this ungodly hour?" Long Hao muttered, his voice low but sharp.
Wei Jian didn't respond, his sharp eyes fixed on the massive trucks parked in the centre of the warehouse. Their cargo was unusual, to say the least. Computers, chairs, furniture, and even beds were stacked neatly in the back of the vehicles. Qianqian stood near the trucks, her face calm but her gaze steely as she watched the group.
Qianqian raised her hand. "Thank you all for coming," she began, her voice carrying a calm authority that silenced the murmurings.
The warehouse fell quiet, except for the occasional shuffle of the three cubs—Bolt, Sparks, and Tank—who prowled around the group, sniffing curiously.
Qianqian's gaze swept over them. "I know you're all wondering why I called you here and what's going on. Your questions would be answered as soon as we get to our destinations, so please let's board the trucks and leave, the earlier the better."
There was 4 trucks all lined up,Wei Jian quickly boarded one with Lei Ming. Long Hao boarded one with Lin Mei, she had wanted to stay with her sister but Lin Na was hell bent on staying in the same truck with Rui Feng. They both need up pairing up with Xu Qianqian. Lastly, Xu Jinhai and Xu Xiaoyu boarded the last truck.
They all set off in accordance, with Qianqian's truck at the top front and Jinhai's at the rear. The journey was smooth and quiet.
Lin Na, seated next to Rui Feng in one of the trucks, kept glancing at the supplies crammed into the back. "Beds, chairs, even computers… What kind of place are we going to?" she muttered under her breath.
Xiaoyu tapped her fingers against the window. " I'm very sure you're not going to reply to any of my questions right now, so wake me up when we arrive." Then she went ahead to continue her nap.
The cubs—Bolt, Sparks, and Tank—rode in the back of the lead truck, occasionally poking their heads out to sniff the air. Sparks let out a soft growl, but Qianqian reached back and stroked his head, calming him instantly.
The journey was long, taking them through winding forest roads and narrow dirt paths. The trees grew denser as they moved further from the city, the sounds of civilization fading into the distance.
By the time the first rays of sunlight broke through the horizon, the trucks pulled into gate and were moving towards the residential area.
"What... is this place?" Wei Jian finally broke the silence, stepping out of the truck and taking in the scene with wide eyes.
Lin Mei and Lin Na stared in disbelief, their gazes darting from one building to another. "Did you build all of this?" Lin Na asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Qianqian hopped out of the truck, a small smile playing on her lips. "It's a work in progress," she admitted. "But yes, this is my base. Our base, if you're willing."
"This is… unbelievable," Xiaoyu said, her eyes scanning the setup. "How did you even—when did you even—"
Jinhai smirked, leaning against the truck. "She's full of surprises, isn't she?"
Lei Ming wandered around running a hand over the polished surface of the walls. "You're telling me this is all yours? And you're inviting us into it?"
Wei Jian crossed his arms, his sharp eyes narrowing. "And why are you showing this to us now? What's the catch?"
"There's no catch," Qianqian replied evenly. "But there is a reason. All of you have skills—strengths that will be invaluable here. You'll understand soon enough."
The group exchanged uncertain glances, still processing the enormity of what they were seeing.
"Come on," Qianqian said, motioning for them to follow her. "Let's unload the trucks and get everything set up. I'll explain everything after we're settled."
Qianqian with the help of the system, unloaded all the appliances from the truck, for easy movement. "No questions for now, work first." She said without stopping as she could feel their stares from behind her.
After unloading, Qianqian led the team to a high point near the base—an open area where sunlight hit consistently throughout the day. The first challenge was installing the solar panels. With a careful and methodical approach, Long Hao and Wei Jian mounted the panels onto sturdy frames, angling them towards the sun's path to maximize energy capture.
Wei Jian oversaw the wiring, connecting the panels to the charge controllers, which would regulate the flow of electricity to prevent overcharging. They also set up a series of safety systems to disconnect power in case of surges or malfunctions, ensuring the base would remain safe.
"The charge controller's set up," Wei Jian said after a long day of work. "Now we just need to connect these to the battery storage."
With the solar panels in place, the next step was to run wires from the panels to the battery storage system. Qianqian decided to store the batteries in a central location, just outside the empty plot she had mapped out for the medical and command center buildings.
This location was close enough to minimize power loss but hidden enough to ensure the batteries would be protected from the elements and potential threats.
Using thick copper cables, the team connected the batteries to the inverters, which would convert the solar-generated DC (direct current) power into AC (alternating current) power, the type typically used in electrical appliances.
Long Hao and Wei Jian worked together to bury most of the wiring underground, using conduits to protect it from wear and tear. "If we run the wires underground," Long Hao explained, "they'll be much safer from accidental damage or sabotage."
They ran multiple lines from the central battery storage to different buildings in the base. The Office building, living quarters, mall and armory were all prioritized, and each received its own circuit to ensure that a malfunction in one building wouldn't affect the others.
Once the wiring was in place, Qianqian's next task was to integrate the power into the buildings. She used her system to help lift and position electrical panels into each structure. These panels allowed them to distribute the electricity efficiently and safely to each room and appliance.
With everything connected, it was time for a test run. Qianqian stood in the command center, flipping the switch to the main circuit breaker. The lights flickered on, followed by the hum of the computers and monitors springing to life.
Then Qianqian heard a notification from the system.
"Congratulations, Host! Your base has taken a significant step toward sustainability. By harnessing the power of the sun, you have laid the foundation for long-term survival. The system recognizes your efforts and rewards your ingenuity."
Rewards:
Energy Storage Upgrade (Level 2): Your base's battery capacity has been doubled, ensuring longer power retention during cloudy days or emergencies.
Solar Efficiency Boost: Solar panels now operate at 120% efficiency, maximizing energy generation even in low-light conditions.
20,000 System Points: For future improvements or purchases.
"Looks like we're good to go," Rui Feng said, scanning the control panels. "The system's stable."
By the end of the day, they were all too tired to even question Qianqian.
"Hey,the tap isn't running", came Xiaoyu's voice from above the stairs.
Qianqian was quickly reminded of her other problem. "Yeah,I'll fix that tomorrow. Please just bear with me today, I'm really tired."
Xiaoyu was about to retort but quickly decided against it, she had seen just how hard Qianqian had worked earlier. "Fine, don't forget it tomorrow, because we really need to shower."
After they had dinner, they all retired to bed, The only furnished building was the mansion so they all paired up and slept off.
