Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Joining A Team
Ezra gritted his teeth and continued walking as if he hadn't heard her.
Brenna abruptly lunged forward with blistering speed, swinging her sword at his neck.
The moment Ezra saw her movement through the eyes of his spirit body, he pushed the girls away and darted in the opposite direction.
"I thought you wouldn't dodge," Brenna mocked, slowly walking toward him.
'Psycho white thief!'
Ezra cursed under his breath and sprinted out of the Haven, only to come to a grinding halt when Brenna appeared out of nowhere in front of him.
"You think my warning is a joke?" she questioned coldly. "Why are you running?"
'Who wouldn't run from a psycho who aimed for the neck at the first silent treatment?' Ezra thought inwardly but didn't dare speak.
Her brows furrowed in a frown. "You're doing it again: answering my question with silence."
Noticing her displeasure, Ezra knew he had to speak; otherwise, no one could predict a psycho's actions.
His spirit body acted as an overhead spy, surveying the scene below. Seraphina and Selene watched from the sidelines, their expressions a mix of intrigue and caution, with Seraphina poised to summon her weapon at any moment. Jude observed with interest, his brow furrowed in contemplation, while the crowd around them was captivated by the unfolding drama.
'Jude is watching. Who knows if he recognizes me by my real voice?'
Ezra cleared his throat before speaking with a deep voice, "Sorry, Miss, but you've got the wron—" but quickly changed his statement when she gripped her sword tightly, "—right person. And I don't remember offending you."
Her eyebrows relaxed, and she nodded before turning to the little audience.
"What are you watching?" she spat coldly.
Everyone quickly dispersed, except for the girls.
Ezra exhaled lightly when he noticed Jude had left.
"You three, follow me." With that command, Brenna walked deeper into the Haven.
The three exchanged glances before following her at a distance.
"What did you do to her? How did she recognize you? What does she want? Where is she taking us?" Seraphina whispered, bombarding him with questions.
"All your questions have one answer…" He paused for a moment, before speaking again, emphasizing each word, "I DON'T KNOW."
Frustration flickered in his eyes as he glanced at Brenna's back, leading them deeper into the Haven.
They reached a place surrounded by a half-fenced spherical, silver dome. Walking through the narrow gate into the dome, Ezra saw three large compounds positioned in a triangular formation around a small house made of an unknown black material.
A few people were entering and leaving the black house in the middle.
Selene's eyes darted around while Seraphina focused on Brenna like a hawk.
Studying the surroundings with his spirit body following closely, Ezra came to one conclusion:
'The arrangement—the narrow gateway, the central position, the dome with material thicker than the fences, and the few houses that can only accommodate the strongest—seems designed to protect the small black house at the center. I bet the beacon we need to enter our world is inside; otherwise, there's no explanation for why so many people can fit into that small house.'
Brenna didn't pause but led them into one of the compounds.
She unlocked it with a key and guided them to a spacious room that felt more like a hall.
Brenna finally spoke up.
"Why are you like this?" she asked Ezra. "And remove that helmet."
Ezra retracted his helmet and glanced at his exposed right arm. "I happened to believe the information from a girl who claimed to be a walking encyclopedia."
Selene spoke anxiously while waving her hand, "I never claimed to be anything. Besides, that was what I read: 'Tank Tarantulas only have First Order in the Green House Plane.' Blame the author."
"I never blamed you; otherwise, I would have complained. I'm just answering a question," Ezra pointed out. "But it's still your fault, or else I would have been more vigilant and wouldn't have been caught unaware."
"But your tone still sounds like you're blaming me…" Selene replied in a small voice.
"It's a joke." Ezra chuckled, making Selene's eye widen.
"So, there's a Tank Tarantula that has evolved to the Second Order? And you guys survived the 'Tank Tarantula trap'?" Brenna asked, her eyebrows slightly arching in surprise. They nodded in affirmation.
"You were lucky you didn't think of going around them, or you wouldn't have lived to tell the tale," she added.
"Because they would catch up?" Ezra questioned.
She fell silent for a moment before explaining, "That's only half the truth. The article she read about Tank Tarantulas didn't tell the whole story to avoid frightening the new Elites. The reason going around spells certain death is because to the left is one of the strongest Third Order creatures in this Plane—the Vineguard. To the right is the territory of one of the trickiest packs of Third Order monsters—the Ghost Mantis," she cautioned coldly. "So don't even think about hunting the Tank Tarantula for monster crystals."
Ezra shivered, realizing he had considered hunting at the border to snag easy monster crystals.
"That's really… really bad. What if someone dies not believing them?" Ezra complained. "At least, nobody would want to verify the second information, but for the first… many will try to outrun and avoid them, since battling them is scary."
"If you don't believe the writer… you become silent for eternity," Brenna said with a plain expression, making Ezra's lip twitch.
"Now, let me tell you why I brought you here." Brenna's expression hardened as she stared at them.
Ezra's heart jumped at her gaze.
"I want you to join my team," she stated.
The three froze in shock before Selene quickly replied, "My sister and I agree."
Ezra weighed the pros and cons.
'She is strong. Very strong. Also experienced, despite her psychotic tendencies. I had the bargaining power and could delay with Seraphina's proposal since my performance wasn't less than hers through the spirit body, but Brenna is different. She—'
"Why are you silent again?" Brenna interrupted his thoughts, her brow scrunched up.
'What does she have against silence?'
"I will join," Ezra said quickly.
"Good. Now, all you need to do is survive one hit," she said with an impassive expression.
"Hey! You didn't tell the girls. Are you discriminating against genders now?" Ezra's voice pitched as he complained, moving back with each step.
"I trust them, but I don't trust you. That sword might have been what saved you, because you look like someone who doesn't deserve Silver Edge," she answered coldly, summoning her blade.
