Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Narrow Path
"I want you to join my hunting team," Seraphina said, locking eyes with Ezra.
"Huh?" Ezra's jaw dropped.
"What? You think we're not capable?" she asked with a smile.
"I don't know if 'we' means the three of us or just you two, but here's the thing: you're asking at the wrong time. My brain is failing, my right hand is hurting, and my body is aching," Ezra explained, wincing.
Seraphina nodded and reclined against a tree.
"Hey! Can you please heal my arm?" Ezra asked.
Selene opened her mouth to speak, but Seraphina interjected with a frown, "How much will you pay?"
"Huh?" Ezra thought he must have heard wrong.
"Healing drains mana and exhausts my sister's mental energy. Even doctors on the other side get paid," Seraphina said sternly.
Ezra stared at Selene in shock, his mouth opening and closing as he struggled to find words. He wasn't sure if Seraphina was doing this to get back at him for postponing her proposal.
Turning to Selene, he noticed she was avoiding his gaze, her face turned aside.
'Even after I got this injury for saving her ass…'
Taking a deep breath, he nodded and asked calmly, "How much?"
"Hahahaha!" Seraphina burst into silent laughter. "Just joking. She's out of mana and mentally exhausted."
Selene joined in the laughter while covering her lips.
"Oh!" Ezra nodded in understanding.
"Keep an eye on the surroundings," Seraphina warned before relaxing.
Ezra's eyes never left the sisters as he settled against a corner.
"Stop staring at us like a creep. I said it was a joke," Seraphina teased, smiling.
He glanced at them once before retracting his gaze.
Thirty minutes later, after resting a bit, Selene managed to heal Ezra and they were ready to leave.
'Damn! I'm still tired as hell. Are they robot, or Is it because of higher Physical or Constitution? I need to rest.'
But he still followed without complain, as staying in the wild and dealing with monsters was worse.
"I guess only Selene is normal," Ezra mumbled as he studied their attire.
His armor had a shattered right arm, while Seraphina's was stained with dried blood, with a few splashes on her face and platinum blonde hair. Selene, on the other hand, had dried blood only on her boots and a few spots on her body—she looked relatively neat compared to Seraphina and entirely whole compared to Ezra.
Although Seraphina had cleaned herself with leaves, it couldn't clearly erase the blood.
The strange trio traversed the flat plain and soon reached the Haven.
It didn't take long to arrive. The Haven had tall, thick silver fences encircling it like a fortress.
On the gate were three boldly written words: Silver Edge Haven.
'Silver Edge? Is it a coincidence?' Ezra thought uneasily, dismissing his sword.
Seraphina shot him a glance.
Around the gates, people rushed toward the depths of the Haven, casting the trio odd looks before continuing on their way.
The three exchanged glances before following the crowd. Ezra and Seraphina brushed off the stares, while Selene felt uncomfortable, her gaze avoiding the eyes of those around her.
Soon, they found themselves before an octagonal silver platform surrounded by a large, standing audience.
They were watching a fierce battle between two fighters, swords clashing with no hesitation, each strike executed at a speed that surpassed even Seraphina's.
Ezra narrowed his eyes, trying to focus on the fighters despite their speed. His eyes widened as he recognized one, and his jaw dropped as he identified both of them… and their relationship wasn't friendly.
"Shit!" He cursed and jumped behind Seraphina to hide, but her short height made it impossible.
"You can't depend on short people!"
He swiftly moved behind Selene, crouching low.
"What?" Selene asked, while Seraphina glared at him.
"That white thief, and the pretty p*ssy boy with long blonde hair. Let's get out of here!" Ezra said anxiously, scanning the area warily.
"Hey! Your armor has a helmet," Selene reminded him, and Ezra halted, realizing his fear had made him forget that.
He quickly enclosed his face with the helmet and stood up bravely, though his eyes still darted around.
"Don't call my name," he added as he relaxed slightly.
"What did you do to them?" Seraphina suddenly asked, narrowing her eyes.
Selene stared at him, her eyes gleaming with curiosity.
Looking around to ensure no one was listening, Ezra whispered, "The white thief wants to steal my sword without knowing that Miss Aliya only lent it to me. While that pretty p*ssy boy is a stupid boy I know from the Basic academy. As for what his problem is, that kid, Jude–forget it."
"What is the issue between both of you?" Selene leaned closer and whispered, but Ezra ignored her, focusing on the battle.
"What's going on?" he asked a nearby spectator.
"Oh! Brenna Whitethorn came from the other Haven and is battling Jude Herald to get a seat in the inner court," the boy explained, his eyes glued to the fight.
'Did she come because of me?' Ezra wondered, suddenly realizing a term was making no sense.
"Inner court?" he questioned in confusion.
"You don't know about the Inner court?!" the boy blurted. After studying Ezra's appearance, he nodded in understanding. "You must be new."
Ezra nodded, while Selene and Seraphina perked up their ears.
"Well, this is the Silver Edge Haven, conquered by Miss Aliya Whitethorn. It has two sections: the Outer court and the Inner court." The boy pointed around, and Ezra saw many identical buildings surrounding them.
"The Inner court consists of three compounds at the center. Theo owns one, where he stays with his friends. Jude owns two; he houses his team in one while staying in the other."
"Oh! They're fighting for prestige… and the house?" Ezra asked, nodding in admiration but inwardly thinking, 'What kind of stupidity is this? I thought they had a death grudge against each other. I guess not all powerful guys are smart. No, Jude's stupidity started before he even awakened; I witnessed the kind of foolishness that makes 'foolishness' seem like a compliment. As for the white thief, I never expected anything better from her.'
The boy looked at Ezra as if he could read his thoughts. "You must think it's because of the good building. I wouldn't blame you; I thought the same. But in the middle of the three Inner Courts is the Beacon, which connects this plane to our world. The Inner Court has an advantage: it enhances perception, allowing us to break through and evolve our skills." His eyes sparkled with a mix of excitement and reverence, emphasizing the significance of the Beacon.
"You guys can leave!"
A cold, authoritative voice cut through the area, prompting everyone to disperse quickly.
Ezra saw that the battle had concluded, with both fighters covered in bleeding cuts.
Jude slowly stood up to leave.
'It looks like that white thief won.'
He tugged the girls to leave quickly.
"Stop right there, Ezra!" a chilling voice reverberated from behind.
Ezra felt his legs falter but kept moving, pretending he hadn't heard his name.
'She can't recognize me, right?'
He quickly released his spirit body and glanced back without stopping.
And he saw it.
Brenna's eyes were fixated on his back, as if she recognized him, but worse… Jude had halted, his gaze locked onto him.
'It must be a coincidence. It can't be me. She can't see through metal.' He gripped the girls' hands tightly, pulling them along.
"If you ignore me again, I will make you mute forever!" Brenna's tone turned icy.
