Calamity of Tomorrow

Chapter 560: 559 Shadow

Hai Yi angrily said, "Zheng Wentian! Don't you know where you went wrong until now? Without the Celestial Court, mortals would have died long ago. These shortsighted fools, for a little bit of power, are opposing the Celestial Court, and you even joined them?"

Xiang Tong scolded angrily, "Why should mortals compete with immortals? Waste him!"

"Break his limbs!"

Seeing Zheng Wentian's stubborn appearance, more than a dozen immortal beings gradually became angry and excited. This Zheng Wentian was not only bad but also foolish, hopelessly so. For that inexplicable reason, he was willing to betray the companions he grew up with and the elders who taught him.

In his fury, Hai Yi struck out with a palm, and his Primordial Spirit's power of the sixth realm transformed into a dragon shape, rushing furiously toward Zheng Wentian.

But the next moment, a look of terror suddenly flashed across Zheng Wentian's face; his eyes widened as he looked behind Hai Yi and others.

"Who's there?" At the same time, everyone present felt an indescribably cold aura rising from behind them and all turned around to launch an attack.

However, upon turning around, they found nothing but emptiness; there was no one there.

When they looked back in the direction of Zheng Wentian and others, they suddenly saw a black gaping maw emerge from the ground, swallowing Zheng Wentian and two others whole, disappearing into the ground.

In the darkness, a strange sound slowly came, resembling the noise of chewing food, as if the earth was tearing apart the bodies of Zheng Wentian and the others, casting a shadow over everyone's hearts.

"What kind of demon is this?" Hai Yi suddenly looked toward the direction of the sound and shouted, "Who's there?"

Accompanied by Hai Yi's pointing, a streak of firelight swept across, lighting up the darkness.

But they could only catch a glimpse of a black shadow flickering past, then nothing else.

Light laughter sounded in the darkness, causing everyone only to feel bursts of chill and discomfort, as if they could faintly hear an ethereal voice calling Hai Yi's name.

"Hai Yi..."

Someone said, "What on earth is it?"

Xiang Tong's face turned pale, "Have none of you heard the legends about this construction site?"

A skeptic responded, "A body-eating anomaly? Are you kidding... That's just a ghost story meant to scare people."

"Let's go and see, I think someone is playing tricks."

However, Hai Yi stopped them, "Something's not right. Let's leave and report this matter to Brother Xiang."

An uneasy feeling faintly swept through Hai Yi's heart, and he led the group outside.

But after just a few steps, they saw on a nearby wall writing in black mud: "Hai Yi... save me..."

The sinister script startled everyone. Hai Yi shook his head and said, "Don't be scared. If he didn't directly attack us, it means he can't directly confront us. Let's hurry and leave, and report this."

The group continued heading outside, soon coming across another wall exuding a foul smell from the black mud. This time, however, the mud didn't form into writing, but subtly outlined a human figure.

As the group moved past the wall, they continued on. Upon reaching the next wall, they again saw a human figure drawn in the black mud, except this figure looked more defined and realistic, as if a person was trapped in the wall, pounding on it.

At the third wall, someone pointed at the figure on the wall and exclaimed in panic, "That... is that Zheng Wentian?"

Hai Yi's complexion was ghastly. He didn't speak, but the human figure on the wall was lifelike, as though it were a real person. Even pores and hairs were distinctly visible, as if someone had truly been sealed within the wall, struggling against it, even to the extent of biting a finger and using fresh blood to write words asking for help.

Was the bloody, foul-smelling writing on the wall just now penned by Zheng Wentian using his blood?

"Something's not right… Let's go, call someone over." With a ghastly expression, Hai Yi led the group swiftly outside.

However, on the next wall, Zheng Wentian's figure became twisted and bizarre, his eyes as large as lightbulbs, and the corners of his mouth split back to his ears, causing sheer terror among the group. Moreover, Zheng Wentian's body seemed to protrude slightly from the wall, as if he was trying to crawl out from inside.

A raspy voice emanated from the wall: "Save… save… me…"

Xiang Tong panicked, "What… what do we do?"

Someone bewilderedly asked, "Was Zheng Wentian dragged into the wall?"

Hai Yi felt somewhat dazed as he watched Zheng Wentian appearing as though he were about to break through the wall, a wave of intense unease washing over him.

At that moment, a celestial being, unable to tolerate the eerily unsettling feeling, launched an attack: "Enough with the tricks! Get out of my way!"

Boom! Before Hai Yi could intervene, the wall blasted apart, and with it, Zheng Wentian shattered, turning into a pool of sticky black liquid that fell to the ground, emitting a potent stench.

Some of it splashed onto the attacker, who immediately disgustingly tried to shake off the black mud with his Primordial Spirit power.

"What in the world is this thing?"

"Was that really Zheng Wentian? Why did he turn into that?"

"What exactly attacked him?"

The celestial being who had just attacked and been splattered with the black mud suddenly let out a sinister smile.

His companion asked in perplexity, "Yan Seng, what's wrong with you?"

Yan Seng didn't respond, but turned and ran, laughing strangely as he dashed into the darkness.

Hai Yi immediately shouted, "Yan Seng! Come back!"

The group hurriedly chased after him, but he burst forth with a speed much greater than before and, after a frenetic chase, they couldn't catch him, watching helplessly as he disappeared into the darkness.

Eventually, a foul smell drifted over, and following it, they finally saw Yan Seng's image on a wall.

On the wall, Yan Seng's face was horrified as he looked outward, extending a finger to write something on the wall, leaving behind a row of black characters that seemed to be written with his blood: "Kill me!"

Seeing this, Xiang Tong stepped back in fright, "Yan Seng, too, was consumed by the wall? What in the world is going on?"

At that moment, everyone only felt as if everything before their eyes was shrouded in dense fog, endlessly pondering yet unable to fathom anything, their minds a complete mess. Everything seemed beyond their comprehension.

Hai Yi felt the same way; his mind was in utter chaos, and he simply wanted to leave immediately.

But the next moment, his head abruptly ached, as though countless boiling waters were being poured into his brain, causing him to cry out in agony.

Countless whispers coursed through his mind, broken images flashing before his eyes.
