Chapter 39
The next day, we were waiting at the academy’s main gate for the escort of the saint candidate sent by the Pope. This included the Chairman and the crown prince.
Apparently, the escort requested that these two come to greet him at the gate, believing that such treatment was only fitting for someone of his stature.
‘This guy doesn’t know anything about the way the world works.’
There was no good reason to openly disrespect these two. It was clear how arrogant the Pope’s son had grown up to be. It was also baffling why they agreed to such a request.
The position touted by the Starlight Church for this person was “a strong candidate for the next Pope.” According to Rosalia, they were trying to keep his identity as the Pope’s son strictly confidential.
However, it was hard to believe that a simple request from a candidate for the papal succession could cause such a stir, making even the head of the Bellium Academy and the crown prince, the first in line to the empire’s throne, wait at the gate. No matter how important priests and a nuns are to maintain the front line, this means that the Pope’s power is actually on par with the Emperor. The more I thought about it, the more suspicious it seemed.
‘Maybe I should change my plans.’
It might not be a bad idea to advance the timing of my healing magic demonstration. The Empire was so beholden to the Church because of their unique healing abilities. If I could introduce healing magic, it would cause the Church’s power to collapse. I might even add some status effect healing spells for good measure.
These people were traitors who had conspired with the demons and would eventually be discarded anyway. Hastening their downfall wouldn’t change much in the end.
“It’s getting crowded,” Rosalia muttered as she looked around. There was a magical barrier around the gate to prevent other students from approaching, and beyond it, a crowd of students had gathered.
The rumour that the Starlight Church had demanded the “return” of Rosalia Leone de Micaela, the saint candidate, had spread quickly. The looks directed at Rosalia were not negative. She had been diligently building a good reputation as a saint candidate. Most students seemed disappointed that she would be leaving so soon.
‘Return, not even a recall,’ I scoffed internally. The choice of words indicated how the Pope viewed Rosalia.
“But it does feel nice,” Rosalia said.
“What does?”
“To be seen as someone they’ll miss. You know what I mean?”
Since there were others around who weren’t part of our inner circle, she cut her words short, and I nodded. In the original story, Rosalia was dragged away amidst mockery and accusations of heresy. This situation was completely different.
“It’s been a while, Mira Crate,” the Chairman said, suddenly coming over to me.
” Chairman.”
“I didn’t expect to see you again like this.”
As we waited, the Chairman approached me from an angle where the students pressed against the magical barrier couldn’t see. With her being already much taller than me, and wearing high heels, she looked even more imposing.
“Have you thought about what to ask of me?”
“Still thinking, I’m afraid. Sorry.”
“I see. No rush, take your time. It hasn’t been that long anyway. As I mentioned before, you have a hundred years to answer.”
The dragon’s peculiar concept of time, absurdly long, remained unchanged. While I nodded in agreement, this time the crown prince approached.
“It’s been quite a while for us too, Mira Crate. But why didn’t you speak to me first? I’m deeply hurt.”
I wondered why he was just standing there. I rolled my eyes internally, but couldn’t ignore the prince, so I turned my head.
“…?”
Then I raised an eyebrow, puzzled.
‘Something seems different.’
It was hard to put into words, but there was definitely something different. It was like there were contours on his body now. It could be dismissed as just a mood, but it was enough to cause a vague sense of discomfort.
While his chest remained flat as before, there seemed to be subtle curves, and his hips and pelvis felt looser than before. Even his waist seemed relatively narrower.
Most of all, his face had shifted from a neutral feeling to a more feminine one. It had always felt more feminine, but now it was completely female—
‘Have I lost my mind?’
I lightly scratched my head. Even if there were suspicions, why was I critiquing a guy’s body?
But the prince didn’t miss my gaze.
“Oh, oh. Are you interested in my body, Mira Crate? Even if you stare at me with such hot eyes, it’s hard for me to respond.”
As my expression soured at his words, the prince chuckled. The Chairman also seemed annoyed, her expression half-fading. The prince continued to chat and joke with me incessantly. As my patience reached its limit, I seriously debated whether I should leave or stay put, when something flashy appeared in the distance.
“Finally here.”
After telling us that the priest would arrive first and then delaying us for 20 minutes, the culprit of our endless waiting was arriving in a carriage that was outrageously extravagant.
It was adorned with an uncountable number of jewels to the point of grotesqueness, and the material looked like pure gold. The horses pulling the carriage were all immaculate white steeds without a speck of dust.
Dozens of nuns were escorting the carriage flawlessly, making it impossible to tell who was escorting whom.
Again, annoyance crossed the faces of the Chairman and the prince, who had been chatting and laughing. Whether we said anything or not, the carriage leisurely passed through the main gate and stopped nearby.
A nun quickly opened the carriage door. Someone emerged slowly from inside. Another nun quickly adjusted the loose robe. There was no attempt to hide what they had been doing inside the carriage.
“Nice to meet you, ladies.”
The Pope’s son bowed politely after looking in our direction. For someone who had been casually disrespected the Chairman and the prince, who had been waiting impatiently for a while, he seemed quite nonchalant.
‘He looks like he deserves a good beating.’
That was the thought that came to mind as soon as I saw his face. Rosalia often criticized him as a guy who only trusted his appearance and status and indiscriminately approached women, and it seemed to be true. I already felt a sense of disgust just looking at him.
Seeing his gaze, Rosalia hid beside me and responded by raising both middle fingers. Priscilla seemed completely disinterested, and as for the Chairman and the prince, they didn’t even need to say anything.
“Welcome. Finish your business quickly and go back.”
With just those words, the Chairman turned away. The guy casually bowed, thanking her for welcoming him. At this point, it seemed like he was intentionally irritating them.
Approaching the visibly agitated prince, who was nervously tapping the tip of his foot with his arms folded.
“Your Highness the Prince?”
“That’s correct. And who are you? I haven’t heard proper information, it seems.”
“I can’t tell you directly, but just know that I’m someone with a very high chance of becoming the next Pope.”
He seemed aware of the need to hide his identity. If the prince couldn’t get information, it was only natural that he himself would remain tight-lipped.
“First, let me introduce myself. I’m Alexander Reinhardt. Nice to meet you, Your Highness William Ercarencia Cresenne von Euperantis Bellium.”
The guy introduced himself as Alexander and extended his hand. The prince, staring at the offered hand, grabbed his wrist with a stern gaze.
Snap!
The sound of bones breaking echoed.
“Aaahhh!”
“How dare you. Alexander Reinhardt. Do you know who I am to dare behave like that?”
As the guy screamed in pain and grabbed his broken arm, falling to his knees, the nuns were startled and approached. But immediately, someone dressed as a maid emerged from the prince’s shadow and aimed a weapon.
Then, without hesitation, someone among the approaching nuns had her ankle severed, causing her to fall with blood spraying everywhere. A sense of unrest spread.
Realizing the meaning behind the actions, the others stopped in their tracks. Meanwhile, the prince continued speaking.
“Aaah! Why, why are you doing this?”
“I asked why you’re doing this. I’ll gladly answer. It’s because you’ve committed four wrongs. First, the crime of muttering orders to me, the prince of the empire. Second, the crime of making me wait here. Third, the crime of looking at me with such filthy eyes. Fourth, the crime of trying to challenge me on the subject of religion. Do you understand?”
Snap!
This time, his wrist twisted 180 degrees. His face contorted even more with pain.
“My hand! My hand!”
“Take this as a warning. I’m not someone you can dare to challenge. Remember that.”
As Alexander writhed in agony as the prince bent his wrist, his body contorted in pain.
“In my opinion, it seems like this arm could be chopped off without much trouble. After all, It’s seems you have an abundance of priests and nuns, don’t you? I think attaching a severed arm wouldn’t be a problem at all. Unlike us, who find it difficult to maintain the front line without the support of priests or nuns.”
I could roughly guess the reason why the Chairman and the prince personally came out after hearing those words. It seemed like he was threatening to withdraw his faction’s support if things went wrong for him.
Even if the front line collapses, they probably think it’s fine as long as they don’t suffer, considering the possibility that the higher-ups of the Starlight Sect might later join forces with the demons.
“I don’t exactly know who you are. But remember this. I will never ignore such behavior.”
With those words, the prince twisted Alexander’s wrist to the end before releasing it. As if touching something dirty, a maid quickly approached and sprayed alcohol on his hand for disinfection.
As the prince turned away and spat out, “I forgot to mention. Welcome to the Bellium Academy. There won’t be any special treatment, so hurry back as soon as possible.”
“Uuugh…”
As he disappeared into the distance with the maid, the nuns hurriedly approached and treated his arm. Standing up in pain, Alexander glared at us with eyes completely different from when we first saw him.
I couldn’t understand why he was glaring at us like he wanted to kill us, even though he was the one who caused all this mess.
“Rosalia!!!”
“Don’t call people’s names so casually.”
He snapped at Rosalia, who replied irritably. Alexander approached us step by step. I tried to block Rosalia, but I felt a sense of discomfort.
“Wait, could it be…”
When I confessed that Roxanna kept trying to seduce me, Priscilla and Rosaria had said that someone possessed by a succubus emits a special aura. However, detecting it would require multiple exposures to the succubus’s pheromones, making it almost impossible. But there was one person who perfectly met that condition – me.
“What’s wrong with this guy? Is he possessed by a succubus?”
So I figured it out. That guy, Alexander, was possessed by a succubus.
With the deviation of the original story, it seemed that the pace at which the demon side was pulling in the Starlight Sect had increased. Otherwise, there would be no way for the pope’s son to appear in such a timing while being possessed by a succubus.
“Was that the reason he just went out?”
If he’s under the succubus’s influence, there’s no way he’d even think about having a backup plan. Now I finally understood why this bastard did such a reckless thing.
