Sebas Aren - Dagger (Chapter 17)

The purblind repair-smith holds three massive horns, handed over along with a damaged dagger.

“Old man, what do I call you?” Sebas asked.

“D’ar,” The repair-smith, D’ar, said with inflexible focus, the strange material, was virtually alien to him.

“I also have an item if you’re available for your services.”

On the other hand, this makes the single-minded attention that attempted to discern the details of the solid horns Sebas provided. Looking over with what can only be described as frustration, the old man’s massive callused hands wait to be filled with something.

A silver coin drops into his palm, “Not money you bloody idiot, give me the Item,” D’ar practically barks at Sebas, startling him, forcing him to produce a gold string with a small rabbit’s foot on the end, while D’ar pockets the coin.

Holding the shabby trinket up to the ceiling, D’ar allows light to refract from the golden shoulder that holds the rabbit’s foot; “You could easily sell the necklace part to a craftsman if they can get the paw off of this, I'm sure a noble would pay a lot for something like that.”

“You think so?”

“Yes,” D’ar said, confidently, “However, if the item is identified, it changes significantly after the mana within the item settles: it is very difficult to get an identified item’s material, compared to something like this, which for now is a dead animal and silk-like string around a bauble’s perch.”

“What’d you give me for it?”

“Less than a copper,” he snarled.

“You fuckin’ tease old man, what's with all of this sagely advice like you want to help out a bum like me.”

“I just told you, the materials would be able to be sold at an ok price, not that I would buy them.”

“I’ll just take the I-D-ing then.”

“Smart kid.”

D’ar once again pulls out a small magnifying glass, able to get a closer look, Sebas noted that gold etching covers the entirety of the glass, save for a circle that allows it to still be used as a magnifier. Tossing the necklace back to Sebas, the multi-skilled utility smith goes back to observing the horns with a renewed vigor, as if feeding a curiosity itch.

Sebas focuses on the trinket, bringing up mental information along with the ominous-looking name of the strange necklace.

“ The collective of a slaughter, an ego extinguished; encapsulated.”

“This is pretty good. If the entire level of stats weren’t there for me to ignore the name and what I assume is a negative trait, I would’ve regretted this.”

“What’s the trait name?”

“Better than being , now hush and let me work, you talk more than your little friend, Adam?”

“How do you know him?”

“He said something about learning how to become a master artisan, I told him to go bring me a hundred rabbit horns and I’ll teach him.”

“Go ahead,” Sebas thought.

“From what I can tell. He took you seriously.”

“What do you know?”

“I’m in a party with the loser, and I have a backlog.”

“Backlog?”

“Shared experience points have been collected. 83 Duplicate Messages.”

“Oh. Hmm.”

“Need me to tell him to leave you alone?”

“Nah, this will be fine, I will deal with it later.”

“Your ear’s funeral old man, if you ever get tired of him talking or saying something stupid, just hit him.”

“You’re not a good friend,” D’ar told Sebas.

Rolling his eyes, Sebas sat on the stone-tiled ground, watching as the smith began to heat the rabbit horns, practically tossing them into fired coals. Watching the cream color fade and dull, Sebas stared into the crackling forge, watching the smith work. Several dozen pinches of some black dust material are placed on the cracks that form on the rapidly fracturing now black horns within the furnace. Strange reflective white glowing takes over as the horns begin to turn a smooth color, the bellows being activated by a foot pedal, the old dilapidated man grabs the strange metallic horns from the forge, showing off how brightly they glow when they appear to cool down from a bright white to a light yellow. Ringing sounds as the horns are smacked into each other, crushed between hammer and anvil, merging with a strange white powder drizzled onto each piece.

All three pieces are welded together seamlessly, making a giant, perfect, cone of white metal-like material. Taking the dagger, D’ar tosses the refined material in the air, tapping his finger onto the dagger, and hitting it in sync as the horn lands on his anvil. A golden light flashes, and a mysterious aura rises, as if ghosts are released into the area, a massive chill followed by a debilitating warmth rushes through Sebas, nearly flooring him.

“... 15 Silvers,” D’ar said.

“... 14?” Sebas asked, not even bothering to take his eyes off of the dagger.

“Nope,” D’ar said

“Fair enough,” Sebas said.

“Good lords… old man you must be… something else, why don’t I see you topside with Gis and the other shambling-like,” Sebas asks after admiring the pure white blade with a triangular shape. Strangely the once brown blade became red, making him admire it more.

“Gis is a master blacksmith, or as you know a Gold-Rank. I am not. I am a repair-smith and an identifier.”

“You created this didn’t you?”

Sebas winces, the information embedded into his head.

“So you are an ignorant prick.”

“Thanks, D’ar, means a lot that you love me so much.” Sebas, bumping into Adam as he turns around to leave, falls backward some.

“Master Artisan- Oh hey Sebas! Master Artisan, I got all 100!”

“D’ar, just D’ar.” D’ar said.

“Yes! Master D’ar.” Adam repeats while Sebas shakes his head from side to side.

“Just a little hit, he doesn’t even feel it,” Sebas said to D’ar.

“You’re a horrible friend.” D’ar retorts.

Adam, interjecting, said “Sebas is great to me! He told me so much, he has fed me as well! He also saved me from horned rabbits.”

“But you carried your weight, and even saved me from my demise earlier.”

“Yesterday,” Adam corrected him.

“Right, yesterday.”

“Do ya need your little… worker? Friend for anything Sebas, I have a promise to fulfill so he might be here for a whole day or two.”

“Just make him carry a tree to you for fuel, I'm sure he’ll surprise you.”

Curiosity paints D’ar’s face as Sebas has yet to sing Adam’s praises, “Don’t you think he’s incompetent or something?”

“Mister, the kid can do everything, I hate him because I’m jealous.”

Adam awws as Sebas leaves, prompting D’ar to curiously peer at the ashen-haired adventurer.

Nodding at him, Adam looked at his status window, which showed a new message.

Adam smiled and tossed a handful of horned-rabbit horns into the flames of the smelter.

“Don’t fool around, kid, it's a delicate process,” D’ar said, leaning on a stone manchette of his chair, and lighting a smoking pipe.

[Notice: Perspective Shift; Sebas Aren (LV 6)]

The delicate dull grass crushed beneath Sebas’ feet, while he breathed inwardly, he made his way alongside the river upstream. Sebas twirled his dagger around in his hand, mentally prodding his .

“Metal,” Sebas said. It’s something he heard Adam say once, after a small interrogation he found out it meant “Cool.” His dagger flashes through his hand at lightspeed, practically blurring in the middle of his vision. Reaching his arm behind his back, Sebas easily grabs his foot from over his shoulder: an impossible feat that would be alien to someone who didn’t max out at level 5.

He runs swiftly, spanning an increasingly longer leap between each stride; the dirt launches backward only for the culprit to be gone at the moment it lands. Arriving at the east side of the crystal clear lake, opposite the previous side where he almost lost his life yesterday, Sebas once again hides within the straw, a place he has become extremely comfortable with.

An inhale, and a mental probe reverberates within his body.

[Access. Skill, conditions met Successfully.]

“Skill conditions?”

[Notice: You cannot when you are {Visible} to Target.]

“That makes sense.”

Probing again, he checks the new skill, created by the weapon, however, no restrictions could be heard from the monotonous voice.

Four horned rabbits remain, and viscera from slaughter has since burned away and fed back into the dungeon. Sebas is painted with a Cheshire grin, he practically chortled with the self-satisfaction of his now amped-up gear.

His dagger began to glow with a blue light, while he focused on . What appears to be a deepening color of blue eventually charged up to a purple color, confusing Sebas, however, he strained himself, attempting to use along with the skill.

[Mental strain exceeded capacity, skills are canceled.]

“On whose permission?”

[Mental strain capacity.]

“Are you calling me stupid?” Sebas asked.

The system refrained from answering, unlike its inconsistent responses, it does not openly mock him. A sigh sounds from Sebas, and he re-charges to a purple glow; one he cannot charge further it seems.

[Mental strain exceeded capacity, cannot reach the third stage of charge.]

Sebas lifted his lip, new information that he discovered himself treating him to plans for future development. The priority of the purple shining blade in his hands changed his directive towards his prey.

A flash of light strobed from within the shrubbery, as a rabbit with two giant stabs launched into the lake.

[Rabbit’s Hatred has begun.]

Sebas thought, “Ominous.” He immediately removed the life from the first rabbit, his speed now that of a local guard outside of their medium plate armor, easily, Sebas stabbed his dagger, with seemingly too much power, launching the blade clean through the top of the skull, right above the horn. “Damn… Metal.”

The threat of death, the sheer outpowering force that was Sebas, would naturally remove the rabbit’s will to fight him, but for an obvious reason; a certain trinket, the beasts began bounding towards him.

With the tip of his foot, the first of three horned rabbits were removed from the battlefield, kicking the beast upright, it launched at least thirty feet in the air, prompting a chuckle from Sebas. The second was collected by a deft hand which collected the second by the scruff, while the last was killed by his dagger, slamming right through its left eye instead of the skull.

“Ough, ow. I’m sorry guys.” Sebas said, while two notifications rang.

[Notice: Kill confirmed, Level 1 Horned Rabbit]

The final rabbit clawed at Sebas, rage imbuing it with hatred that forego skill activation.

“I know, I know, it's all my fault… but I am just bigger than you,” Sebas said while a red light flashed in his teeth.

[Notice: Kill confirmed, Level 1 Horned Rabbit]

[Skill Experience has been gained]

[Rabbit’s Hatred has ended.]

Sebas wiped the blood and hair from his maw, disgusted by his skill, while he collected the bodies that were intact enough to place in his bag… without soiling it, it would seem that using gravity to kill monsters was a bad idea.

A shine glinted from the lake as the bloody rabbit that was floating disappeared, deep inside the water where the corpse lay, Sebas saw a treasure chest!
