Chapter 39: Welcome to AionTech (1)

*beep* *beep* *beep* *click* "Soren? Why are you calling at... two in the morning?" Logan asked tiredly, as he was rubbing his eyes.

"Sorry for waking you up all of a sudden, mind if I ask you about something?" Soren asked in an apologetic manner.

"It depends, does it involve anything illegal?"

"Nothing of the sort. I just want you to store my coffee machinery for some time, preferably a few years, at least...."

"A few years, got it... Hold on a minute, a few years!? Wait, why dude!? What the hell happened Soren!? You didn't get yourself involved with anything illegal, did ya!?" Logan repeatedly asked in a shocked manner, as he hadn't expected Soren to ask him for such a thing.

"Nothing of the sort, you dimwit. I just got myself a new job, which will require me to close down the shop for a long while. It's not as if I'm going to the battlefield." Soren explained briefly, as he didn't want to risk saying anything particular about his job.

"Wait Soren, since when? When did you... Wait, is that what that conversation was actually about? I thought it was just a joke. Soren, my dude, I don't know what kind of job you've taken, but get the hell out of there immediately!"

"Calm down, you dimwitted jackass! *sigh* I already know what I'm getting myself into, so don't worry that much about me. Besides, I never had a way out in the first place, so might as well dive into this mess headfirst."

*sigh* "Let me know this at least. Did you get yourself involved with a crime syndicate or anything of that kind?"

"Nothing of the that sort. I'm just going to be working as a tester, that's all."

"So long as it doesn't kill you, that's more than enough for me." Logan stated in a relaxed manner, before asking. "So, think you can give me more details, if it's possible at all. I know that testers are required by law to keep an oath of silence for the products they might be testing, but you could still try to sneak in a little detail for your friend, can't you?"

"Sorry Logan, but I can't risk my life for your little impulse. But who knows, maybe once this mess is completely over, I might be able to share a story or two." Soren stated casually, as he felt a sense of relief when Logan didn't try to pry any further.

"Eh, it was worth a shot. Who knows, maybe I'd be able to invest on a new product ready to take world by storm. Anyways, I'll fill the others as well about you, so don't worry too much about them. Although I still want you active in our group chat Soren, so don't you dare go awol on us, just because you got a new job."

"Don't worry, the moment I get some actual free time, I'll be pinging everyone for a quick convo. Oh, before I forget Logan, the spare keys for my shop are inside the right pot with the fake plants on top. It's the one with the long leaves and pink flowers, you know the one."

...

"Got it, got it. I'll go with a couple of my boys and take care of your stuff. Anyways, I'll be off now. Good night you bastard." Logan's voice came out of Soren's phone, as Soren yelled back furiously, before closing his phone. "Oh, go to hell." *click*

Once he finished his conversation, he couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief, before letting his body fall right next to a half-filled suitcase with clothes. He knew that Logan occasionally pried in everyone's business whenever it fancied him, so he felt extremely relieved once he relented on his curiosity and let him go, without many complications. Since he had taken care of the coffee machinery, he only needed to send a message to the landlords for his departure, since he had already taken care of both rents days ago and didn't want to wake them up, lest he wanted to be lectured for the next two hours of his life.

With both his shop, his friends and apartment taken care of, he focused on packing his personal belongings, which mainly consisted of basic outfits and underwear, his toiletries, his personal electronic devices, identification papers and a portable moka pot for his own coffee. With everything taken care of, Soren gave his apartment one final look, before exiting it and meeting a pair of individuals, who were his escorts from AionTech, as they were standing guard in front of his apartment.

"Did you finish packing everything you need?" One of the two individuals asked, as he turned his eyes towards Soren's suitcase.

"I got everything I need. I don't exactly have any personal belongings and the rest of the furniture here is part of the actual apartment." Soren stated casually, before putting his apartment keys in a tiny box near the entrance of the building, which then would be picked up by the landlord in the morning, after reading Soren's message. Once he gave it one final look, Soren entered a black car together with the two guards, put his luggage in the back of the care and left his apartment complex behind.

On the way towards AionTech, Soren spent most of the time staring at the nearly empty roads, with the occasional drunkard throwing up near the intersections and police officers berating other drunkards, who had crashed their cars near light poles or water hydrants. Soren occasionally tried making some small talk with the guards, but was always met with deafening silence whenever he did.

After some time, the car eventually stopped behind a tall apartment complex, which was right next to Glaxion City's AionTech building. Once Soren took his luggage off his car, his phone suddenly started ringing and quickly picked it up. "What is it doc? I just arrived in front of the apartment complex, right behind AionTech."

"Good to know. I only called to get a check on you. Wanted to make sure you wouldn't get screwed over by someone or something." Morgan stated calmly, as he continued. "Anyways, since you've arrived at the apartment complex behind the building, just go near the open gate with the guard and show him your ID. Me and Harold have already taken care of the rest of the procedure, so you can go straight to your new apartment and get some rest. Also, tomorrow come at the entrance hall at eight in the morning, so you can get a quick tour of the building, before getting started on the first day of your work."

"Got it doc. Is there anything else I should know or keep in mind of?" Soren asked curiously, as he didn't want to get in trouble on his first day on the job.

"Nothing specific comes to mind... Knowing you, I think you'll be fine, so long as you show some basic manners to your superiors. As for your co-workers, I believe you'll get along with them quite well, so don't worry too much about tomorrow. Anyways, take care Soren and I'll wish you luck for your first day on the job."

"Take care..." *click* Once the call ended, Soren couldn't help but sigh weakly, as he wasn't sure if he'd be able to get through the day without any complications.
